Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments Scarlet was very popular among the YA book bloggers in 2012. I also have a copy!

I'm just sitting here blatantly stealing everyone else's ideas ;-)

Mary Alice (mae8590) | 46 comments Ok I was wondering, I plan on reading
Book of a Thousand Days
It says in the description that it is a retelling of a Grimms fairy tale. I just wanted to make sure it fit in this challenge and all.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4039 comments Rusalka wrote: "Yep. You're good Pragya."

Ooh, good! So I'm settled with Cinder, Scarlet and Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version by my side. All ready.

Oooh, that one is a new release on Audible.com. Hmmm!

message 55: by Mary Alice (new)

Mary Alice (mae8590) | 46 comments It seems reallllly interesting. I saw one book that was a bunch of fairytales/nursery rhymes that everyone just said were horribly depressing. I'd rather read something a little less sad haha and this seemed like a good one! I found a few others that I'm interested in too though... maybe they will fit into another challenge in the future :)

Yup definitely, a retelling of “Maid Maleen”. And you had done exactly what I was selfishly hoping would happen with this challenge.

I'm a big mythology, folklore nerd (did a heap of classics and mythological anthropology courses at Uni). And you have found a story i know nothing about and will now have to go and read. Score!!

Mary Alice (mae8590) | 46 comments Yay :) I'm glad I could help! haha

message 58: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have had Cinder on my TBR list for a while. Maybe I could read that one. I really like the Robin Hood titles though.... Do you remember the old Robin Hood TV series with Richard Green? Did you get it there, Ruslka?

message 59: by Ava Catherine (last edited Dec 18, 2012 04:17PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Rus, since I have had this book on my tbr for several months, I would like to read The Song of Achilles The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller Madeline Miller if it meets the requirements. If it doesn't, I'll look for something else. I do have something else in mind as a back-up. ; )

Actually, my back-up is The Once and Future King by T.H. White The Once and Future King by T.H. White. So maybe if book one doesn't qualify, you can look at book two. ; )

Thanks, my dear! ; )

message 60: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19211 comments Oh did we ever Cherie!! Although I get Monty Python's "Dennis Moore" song stuck in my head when I think about it.

Connie, both your picks are fine. I forgot about The Song of Achilles. I do love Patroclus too... too many choices!

message 61: by Ava Catherine (last edited Dec 18, 2012 05:08PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments GREAT! I have a book.

Now, I just need time to read. So much cleaning, cooking, shopping, wrapping, and last minute whatever...

When will there be time to read? December 26? Alas! Alack! Woe!
I may lose my mind with limited reading time each day.

I loved the British series, Robin of Sherwood (1984-1986). I wish I could get the BBC series from 2006. Did you see the movie with Russell Crowe? Very well done.

Speaking of Robin Hood, I picked up The Outlaws of Sherwood and Scarlet at the library today - I just couldn't wait! Now to hold back from starting them until January 1 :D

That's a pretty big recommendation!

message 67: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, EVERYONE should read The Mists of Avalon. It is wonderful! I do not know how many times I have read it. I guess it would be on my Favorites list if I ever stopped to put one together.

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments I'd like to join in with this challenge. Although I'm a simple being and not sure I've full understood :D

Can I read Skystone by Jack Whyte and Briar Rose by Jane Yolen?

message 69: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments Actually I've just ordered the Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. Hopefully that counts. I'll read it anyway if not :)

message 70: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Jeez I turn my back on the thread a few days and my book gets stolen. Oh well I need someone else to read it to help me figure up the point tally in the end.

message 71: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19211 comments Jenny, the Goose Girl and Briar Rose definately will count.

As to Skystone, I'm a little confused about that one. The summary doesn't make it clear at all. I may have to ask Judy and Janice who have read it to help adjudicate that one for me...

Noted. As I am now on the fence between it and Hood, I feel I may be falling towards Avalon...

Skystone is the first book in a series about the Arthurian legend. The Skystone is the material from which the sword is made. It's not the complete story - just the creation of the sword and setting the stage for Merlin, Arthur and Camelot.

Does that help?

message 77: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19211 comments Thanks Janice. Ruling a no for Skystone then. But yes, wonderful to have you join us Jenny (and lovely to meet you too).

Travis, you have to hide your books pretty damn well from these guys if you don't want them stolen.

message 78: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19211 comments Completely unrelated, a friend linked this photographer to me tonight who has made an album of Fairy Fatales http://briancummings.com/print/fairy-...

I'd turn them into a badge for this challenge but they are too good to tamper with, so just have a look see.

All acceptable, Rusalka?

Yes yes yes and yes. Esp Till We Have Faces. I just read about this book when researching the topic and Cupid and Psyche has always been my favourite myth, and then C.S. Lewis retold it? Why had no one ever told me before?!?

Shanna_redwind | 228 comments I think I might go with Beauty and the Werewolf (Five Hundred Kingdoms, #6) by Mercedes Lackey by Mercedes Lackey since I have it and have been wanting to read it. But I'm still looking.

Hopefully fairy tale crossovers are allowed? This looks to be Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast. But you never know what other fairy tales might emerge in the 500 Kingdoms stories.

Bugger. I didn't think of mash-ups. It seems to be a mix of two stories, which is better than millions. Hmmm let me think about it and I'll get back to you later today.

message 96: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4539 comments Haha I just mixed up my challenges. I was going to say that Grendel had to be disqualified because it was less than 200 pages. Then I realized that condition went with the Alphabet Challenge. I need a spread sheet to keep all of this straight. Maybe a glass of wine will help. That sounds good.

Alright. I'm not entirely comfortable that mashing up two stories fits with what I had in mind for the challenge. However, in the interest of fairness Snoozie Suzie has a few stories in her book, but they aren't smooshed together. But still I will let this one slip through to the keeper if you wish to read it.

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments Whoop!! The Goose Girl arrived!! Good old amazon. Only ordered it a few days ago! We read the true story of Hansel and grettel in this group a long while back. I never did get hold of a copy :(
