Kimberly | 2033 comments Pragya and I were talking about doing a buddy read of A Game of Thrones (A Song of Fire & Ice) by George R.R. Martin starting in January.

If anyone wants to join in on the discussion they're more than welcome to :)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments i've already read the first 4, but I'll check in on your thread and give you my 2 cents :)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments Oh this book terrifies me! What kind of time frame are you thinking about, Kimberly?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I've borrowed this to read, but I've been putting it off - and what with an alphabet and goodness knows what else, I'm not sure how far I'd get with it. How long are you thinking it will take?

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think I am one ahead of Amy and waiting for the next to read, but I will watch the thread too.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Hmm..yes we'll have to think of the time frame. What say, Kimberly?

Kimberly | 2033 comments I was thinking maybe 6 weeks or so ending around February 15th starting January 1st? Since its so long I want to take my time with it. What about you Pragya?

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments 700 pages over 6 weeks is 120-ish pages per week, 17 pages a day. OK, I'm in!

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Yay, Kat!

Kimberly | 2033 comments Yay!

Kimberly | 2033 comments We're probably just going to end it on February 15th Amber :)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments I'm feeling kinda brave today (must be all the Christmas sugar still pulsing through my veins), so I'm going to start a couple of days early.

*Starts flexing wrists in preparation*

Kimberly | 2033 comments I'm 20 pages into it and liking it so far. Hopefully I can read to at least page 100 by the weekend.

Sylvia | 2 comments I read Game of Thrones last month and absolutely devoured it. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did! Would love to join in the discussions as you progress :)

Kimberly | 2033 comments Well its safe to say that I won't have a problem hitting 100 pages since I just did. The book is awesome! I'm surprised at how close the first season of the show waS compared to the book. I might just have this book done in a few days.

I read the book first and was also impressed by how well they did the season. It doesn't stay that way as much as I would have hoped.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I just like the way the story is told through multiple people but always moving forward. Not a lot of remembering back in time noy stopping and 3 people tell the event from the same time but the story always progressing

That's what I like about it too. When I first saw that it was told by multiple characters I was a little worried about that happening.

Ditto! Although I was more worried about not being able to keep track of who was who - but I'm feeling quite comfortable with it now.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Anyone else tried the audio book by roy dotrice he does the whole series and his voice is perfect for the part

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I liked the format when I read the book too. I thought the 1st book was well done this way and after a while, it was just so natural. There were times though that I found myself not paying as much attention to one character because I wanted to hurry up and get on to the next one. Try not do do it, because it gets a little fuzzy trying to keep up with what happened in the next books.

I started to listen to it, but couldn't keep track of all the different characters. I find it difficult to listen to fantasy because of all the characters & places with odd sounding names. It's harder to flip back pages on audiobook.

I do want to read the books. Someday!

I always have that problem with alternating POV books, Cherie! I kind of adopt someone as my favourite and don't care so much about the rest! But I can tell I'll get confused if I don't pay attention to them all with this one.

Janice - I couldn't do this one on audio, I zone out too much.

Kimberly | 2033 comments Well I finished watching season 2 of the show last night (more like around 5am this morning) and read a bit further. 227 pages in and still enjoying it. I love the amount of detail in the book but it means I have to pay attention in case I miss anything. I have a feeling if I were to miss the slightest thing I'd be running the risk of missing something important.

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Maybe I'll give it another try on adiobook someday. I still have it in my library I think.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I started the audiobook Thursday morning. It is 35 hours long I am half way exactly. I should note that I only listen while I milk cows which I am alone and its fairly quiet so listening to this works great for me because my mind doesn't wander because I'm busy. If I tried while just sitting in a chair might be a different story, but I find it easier to listen this way because the narrator reads about a third the speed I do so I actually have and easier time keeping track of the characters than if I read it myself. I might just go through the whole series by the end of the month. Only about 120 hours of listening or so.

message 32: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments And what do the cows think of it? Or do you wear earbuds?

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Phone in my shirt pocket. They are so used to the radio being on I think the silence is kind of strange to them but there are a couple that get a little skiddish by a strange voice and no person around. They'll live. It's funny how observant cows are though they seem dumb by appearance but they're rather clever creatures when they choose to be.

message 34: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 59896 comments Yes, I have memories of chasing cows back into the pasture where they'd run straight to the hole we didn't know about, and right out again. I'm sure glad I don't have to chase those pesky critters any more.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments just about to finish this one up tonight then its straight on to A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin tomorrow. With all the different characters and kingdoms and what not I think it would be easiest to just hammer through all 5 books now. The end of this one and I imagine all of them kind of keep you hanging anyway until the series is over.

Shanna_redwind | 228 comments I listened to it over last summer, and I thought it was great. I was out in the field picking snap beans, and I can tell you that the book certainly livened things up. (6-8 hours of bean picking a day can make your brain rot)

I usually find that I don't like switching characters because I always have a favourite that I'm sorry to leave. For the most part, I was happy to switch characters. There was only one storyline that I wasn't as eager to go back to, the "Dragon's" sister. Even it was okay though.

Number 5 is in my ABC challenge sights for this year.....I read the first 4 pretty much back to back at the beginning of last year. Unfortunately book 6 isn't expected until 2015 and I expect that #7 will be quite a while after that, so I will probably re-read them all at some point (or at least skim through to refresh myself on the details) I remember going through the same thing when I started reading Stephen King's Dark Tower Series. I read the first 3 and then there were YEARS in between each book after that. I must have re-read those at least 5 times.

I had my favorites too (I think we all do) and then there were some that I just HATED with all I had. I really liked the Deanerys chapters though.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I actually like the imp for some reason but since I have been listening to it part of it is just the narrators voice I think

Roy Dotrice does a GREAT job as Narrator doesn't he?! I went back and forth listening and reading. There was a different narrator for the 4th book and I didn't like him as well.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Roy Dotrice is the man

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments So far I haven't seen a lot of give aways posted yet Amber so you seem safe. I'm dying to hear what you guys think of some of the characters as individuals, and some of the things that happen during the book. My mom and I talked about it at great length at the time we were reading it.....but I'm not going to spoil anything for you.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments tyrrian lannister is by far my favorite character. I also like Arya Jon Snow Lord Stark and Cersei. I am not real fond of Sansa or Catarine or the dragons sister. pardon my spelling on any of these names.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments A Clash of Kings. Tells much on the relationship of the dire wolves. Just have to read the whole series to learn all of everyone
