The Host

Wait, how can they be aliens if they don't reproduce by latching onto peoples' faces and laying embryos in their chests

That's a secret that you can only know if you pass the initiation and get brainwashed into my supah ultra awesomeful cult of the Great Ninja Goddess (pbuh).

Oh, that's all right then. I was a little worried that it would involve something creepy.

The Host was okay. Better than twilight, but still very reminiscent of it. It's pretty much only better because the Bella-ness of the character can be better explained away by the alien's traits.
The aliens really irritated me....I couldn't stand their pacifistic arrogance. The entire time, I was hoping that some human terrorism would be thrown into the mix.

@Catherine I agree with you. I posed a topic question awhile back, Why didn't the aliens just inhabit the bodies of animals? There are enough animals/insects on Earth they didn't need to steal human bodies. I was wondering when the fighting and war was going to break out!

I'm not sure, but i think the why in this book was because they saw that the human race was not perfect. They saw all the war, lies, and controversy so they decided they would come and "help" whether the humans liked it or not... just my theory. =]]

That's close. They monitored our planet and saw us as a violent, hateful species, one that was close to destroying itself. If they'd thought we were compassionate, forgiving (more like them) they would have left our planet alone and gone in search of another.
Wanda says as much during Walter's funeral:
"There was no hatred in your heart...that you existed is proof that we were wrong. We had no right to take your world from you."

I'm not really a sci-fi fan so I don't really know much about the typical aliens found in typical sci-fi books, movies, etc.

I don't they invaded because they obviously wanted to help....it was more of a "running out of resources" take over. Remember Wanda describing their enormous population?
The "humans are evil/violent" thing is pretty obviously a colonialist mentality -- first, you encounter the people and see what's worth taking; then, you demonize them to justify taking it from them; then, you try to negotiate/threaten for it; and finally, you invade and fully wrench it out of their hands by force. It's been the same pattern in human history and what they said in the Host is a stereotypical sci-fi colonialism analogy.

I think you're mistaking The Host with V.
The souls didn't run out of resources. If anything, one of the strikes against humans was that we were squandering ours. They never demoralized us...hell, most humans didn't even know the invasion was happening. They never negotiated. They arrived in a few key locations, performed insertions, and went about their business. They never, ever took anything by force.
I'm still trying to remember where she mentioned their "enormous population." I remember her saying that those with the potential to become Mothers divided their cells to create new lives, but all I remember hearing about the Origin was that most souls would love to go there and that it was the only place they could live without a host body.

I'm guessing you misinterpreted what I was saying...
Colonialism =
• Finding place to colonize and what they can take Souls arrived via space ship, scouted around a bit, did abduct a few humans for medical testing/insertion. European explorers came by ship and discovered and recorded about the Americas and Africa
• Demozation and justification of taking resources Souls declare humans violent and beyond hope, and see themselves as the solution. They think that they are saving the Earth and humans from themselves. Europeans declare the Native Americas inferior, dirty, evil hell-bound pagans (because of polytheism), violent, savage, wasteful (because using land differently in a way Europeans saw as "bad"), etc. They justify killing them because NA were "bad"/"immoral"/"savages" or enslaving them because it saved their souls from Hell (via forcing them into Christianity along with slavery) or taking their land because they were using it wrong and didn't deserve it, and so on.
• Trying to peacefully take their stuff Souls do insertions in secret to slowly take hold of the planet. They kept pushing in and pushing in until it was too late for the humans. Europeans kept trying to peacefully negotiate for resources, make treaties, trick NA into showing them how to live there, pretending to be friendly at first, etc. Most of the settlers were Innocent and friendly (although racist against their slaves and the indigenous), and saw NA attacks on them as proof that they were evil.
Americans during expansion kept slowly pushing the NA west, made treaties, pretended to be friendly, etc. until it was too late for them to team up and fight back.
• Trying to forcefully and/or violently take their stuff, usually with backlash from the colonized. Souls announce their presence and begin openly dragging away/kidnapping remaining humans for colonization. Humans fight back, violently, even though it's a losing battle. Souls use guns and other weapons to hunt or threaten or kill those who are part of the guerilla resistance. Any human that struggles too much after being colonized (inserted with an alien) and cannot be subjugated is put to death ("disposed of"). Americans/Europeans violate treaties and take NA land anyways. When they resist the takeovers/colonizations, the Americans/Europeans respond with military force or locals militias. If the Native Americans attacked new colonies in anger/protest/revenge, they were killed or chased away.
Note:
"Demonization" (convincing yourself and/or others that someone/something is evil, immoral, gross, incorrect, deserving to suffer, contemptible, etc., usually in justification of a wrongdoing to it) is VERY different from "Demoralization" (putting someone down, calling them evil/gross/wrong, making someone feel bad about something, etc.).
Also, the Souls DID take what they wanted (host bodies) by force. No race except for the Spiders were reported to actually want/like the colonization (the Spiders were only cool with it because it brought innovation/cultural diffusion at little cost to them, due to short life span and quick reproduction). None of the humans liked being taken over, obviously, and it was done against their will, which DOES by definition mean that they were forced (into being hosts that is).
I'm guessing you misinterpreted what I was saying...

The book does actually say that the Souls are enormous in population and Wanda openly declares that they have "superior numbers".
But even if it didn't, it's not that hard to infer.....
• Every 1 in 10,000 is capable of reproducing. In reproduction, over 1,000,000 are produced, which more than compensates for the lack of those that can reproduce.
• Souls can potentially live forever
=======> Huge birth rate, next to zero death rate means great population/growth. Huge populations need huge amounts of resources.
• Every planet (except for the Spiders) is completely or almost completely colonized.
• Colonization can be completed in a few decades or less
• Resources aren't very often renewed because Souls rarely reproduce with their hosts.
=========> This creates a Self-perpetuating need for expansion, since resources are used up too fast and not replenished.
Therefore, they have a huge population and a great need for new resources. They saw the Earth and its resources, then demonized the population and tried to take it (and almost succeeded, apparently). Then, when the Earth project was completed, they almost immediately found and started to colonize the Dolphin Planet.

No, the reason the Humans were taken over instead of animals was because Humans were the intelligent species. There was a big to-do on the fire planet because there were two intelligent species and one ate the other.
I'm a little surprised, though, that with all the talk of the dolphin planet that dolphins weren't mentioned on Earth. They are proven to have a superior intellect to most animals. It might have been a neat concept.

Therefore, the "aliens" in The Host are NOT true aliens.
Your thoughts?"
Love the way you think. :D hahahaha! but anyway they are aliens because they dont belong in this world.
