Maybe I should say that, when he says "this man's father" he is referring to the man in the picture.

Uh, let me guess, Maybe his son?
I loved the riddle scene!!! Those riddles were the best! I was asking almost everyone in my class to answer the riddles.

Explanation :
This man's father is my father's son.
Take the second part of the statement first, the son of the observer's father is the observer, as he has no brothers or sisters.
That gives us "this man's father is me".
Hence the person in the portrait is his son (because the riddle said this man's father) .
I said it would provoke arguments. But I am pretty certain that this is the correct answer.....Please give an alternative reasoning of you don't agree, Gabby!

A new puzzle, if anyone is still following this discussion.
There is a secret meeting to be held in the castle, and everyone attending the meeting has to answer a question in order to be admitted. The first attendee arrives, the gatekeeper says "1" to which the attendee replies "3". The gatekeeper says "Enter friend".
The second arrives, gatekeeper says "2", reply "3", "Enter friend". The third arrives, gatekeeper says "3", answer "5", "Enter friend". The fourth arrives, gatekeeper says "4'". What reply must be given to gain admittance?

Sorry - screwed up! There was meant to be a number between the inverted commas. But I am sure that your answer would have been right if the gatekeeper hadn't said anything!!!! Good marks for ingenuity.

He might as well keep pink fluffy unicorns. I went and solved the whole stinking thing and then looked up the answer online, and you have to admit that makes the most sense, especially if Einstein asked the question. He was a notorious trick question person.
I put a few original riddles up on website for anybody interested. http://jameswymore.wordpress.com/game...

But no, the man was not looking at a picture of himself.
