Riddles

Two of my favourite answers; Poe wrote on both, and they both produce a few notes, but they are very flat.

purposefully dropping 10 desks at one time on a man results in a murder.
Same with ravens.
Landon wrote: "To solve me is to gain me.
to forget me is to lose me.
To use me you must answer this riddle."
Is it an ANSWER?
to forget me is to lose me.
To use me you must answer this riddle."
Is it an ANSWER?
Landon wrote: "A man says "I am lying".
And he speaks the truth.
There is an answer to this."
Is he lying on the floor?
And he speaks the truth.
There is an answer to this."
Is he lying on the floor?

And he speaks the truth.
There is an answer to this."
Is he lying on the floor?"
Good answer! But no. He is sitting in a chair.

I've heard this one before...can't remember the answer... Happiness? Or maybe Gifts?

I'm struggling with a couple of these....just while I think, I wondered if anyone reads / has read the Raymond Smullyan books (What is the name of this book, The lady and the tiger.....).
Maybe I've got it - what do you own but other people use it more than you. I guess "your name".
Still struggling with the lying one though .....
Still struggling with the lying one though .....

I can tell you the answer to the lying one. It is not a matter of wit and it kind of depends on how you define a lie.
@Landon - the guy who is lying and he speaks the truth - based on your hint, could it be some sort of preacher, preaching "the truth"?
Otherwise, I give up and you might as well post the answer as far as I am concerned - you got me!

THe 11 sticks problem - isn't this the one where you spell the word "nine" with the sticks? 3 for N, 1 for I, 3 for N and 4 for E.

Otherwise, I give up and you might as well post the answer as..."
It's not a preacher but that was another good guess! My definition of a lie is when you say something and you know it's not true.
The man is a sociopath. Sociopathic people can tell a "lie" and honestly believe it is the truth.

haha! ur right, how did you know?

Clever! I've still got the third one of your riddles to sort out, but I've no clear ideas about that one yet and I'm not ready to give up......

I've seen this sort of thing before (you get them in the "Professor Layton" games for the Nintendo DS and in puzzle books). Same sort of question, but for someone else to answer! I have three matches, how can you turn them into 9 without adding any?

OR
Arrange them so they make a figure 9.
And you said you're still working on my third riddle...which one is it? I gave four...
You're right - missed one. The two I have left are the "to solve me is to gain me", which I am a bit stuck on. The two sisters I haven't thought about, but it sounds kind of familiar. Need to put my thinking cap on.
For the matches, sorry, I should have stipulated that you're not allowed to cut/break them. The solution is along the same lines as the previous question, but ever so slightly more opaque.

The match one's easy. Make a roman numeral nine (IX).
I love Professor Layton, too!

I agree!! I read it many years ago but I remember loving that part the most.

I will put my riddles in bold and write if they're solved next to them. You can follow the layout if you want to, or not :)
1. What goes around the world but stays in a corner? solved
2. Give me food and I will live, give me water and I will die. What am I? solved
3. A horse is tied to a rope that is six feet long. Yet it still manages to get to a bucket of straw that is ten feet away. How? solved :)

I will put my riddles in bold and write if they're solved n..."
Good idea about the bold. As for your riddles:
1. a postage stamp
2. a fire
3. the rope isn't tied to anything else? I'm not sure about this one.

I'll try some more
1. Jack shows Jill three boxes, saying, "In the first I have £1, in the second I have £10 and in the third I have £100. Tell me a statement, if it is true I will give you £10, if it is false I will give you £1" Jill said something and Jack was forced to give her the £100. What was it? solved by Mallory
2. There was a plane crash and every single person on it died. But when the ambulances came, they met survivors. How? solved by Andy
3. This may or may not have been in the Hobbit. I just have it memorised from childhood:
In marble halls as white as milk
Lined with a skin as soft as silk
Within a fountain crystal clear
A golden apple does appear
There are no locks to my stronghold
Yet thieves break in and steal my gold
What am I? solved by Landon and Andy
:)

Dead right
Dead right

Riddle two: The survivors were not in the plane, they were at the place the plane crashed into.
Riddle three: An egg?

Last one's a "gollum" riddle - egg.
2nd one, presumably the plane crashed into a building with people in it or something? Or maybe the plane contained animals, not people?
1st one, I'm not sure that I understand what kind of statement you want. A statement about the boxes, or just any old statement like " pi is the ratio between the diameter of a circle and its circumference"?

"Shut up!"
And Bilbo says, "I beg your pardon?"
Gollum: "I wasn't talking to you!"
