This (one more) question is prompted by H. Haggard's "Allan Quatermain" series—stirring stuff, written when men were men, and women were women.
How should the books in this series (or similar) be ordered? I ask this as the novels were not written in correct chronological order (authors!). For example the novel "Allan Quaterman" is set in 1885, was written in 1887, and tells of the death of Mr Quatermain. While "Marie" is set in the 1830s, was written in 1912, and tells of the first adventure of Mr Q.
Having looked at the website of the Haggard Society, and at a few of his books I have in my possession, there is no accepted order.
In general, when there are questions about order more than one list is created - one for published order and one for chronological order - clearly noted as one or the other. The Chronicles of Narnia series lists are a good example of this.
Ditto. Plus a lot of series (particularly from pre-isbn days) were not always labeled as series, book/volume numbers not necessarily clear on book covers, nor authors necessarily planning on doing a series. Plenty of precedents.

Is there a policy on this?
