Erika | 17 comments I want to read a book that is really scary about ghosts, apparitions something like that.

It doesn't matter if it's ya or adult just let it be scary, I want to feel like I can't sleep after reading it!

And please don't tell me Anna dressed in blood , because that's not scary at all. When I say scary I mean it.
thanks. :)

Jenn (leota) | 3 comments I love books and movies about ghosts or hauntings/possessions! It's hard to find good ones though.

The most terrifying book I've ever read is The Ruins by Scott Smith. It doesn't fall into the ghost category but I found it really horrifying. I honestly couldn't even look at the cover of the book afterwards. I think this had more to do with the way it deals with death rather than any 'scares' in the story though. It was very psychologically disturbing.

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons was also very disturbing. Not quite as terror-inducing as The Ruins but it definitely stuck with me.

Joe Hill is an amazing writer - much better than his dad in some ways. I've read Heart Shaped Box and 20th Century Ghosts. Both had very haunting sequences that really stuck in my mind. I'll never EVER look at cardboard boxes the same way again. :(

If anyone has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them too! :)

BOOO ! ! !

Jenn (leota) | 3 comments Oh, and don't bother with Hell House by Richard Matheson. He's written some good stories, but this one definitely isn't. :S

T (10040604) Dan Simmons - 1)A Winter Haunting and 2) Song of Kali

Laird Barron - The Croning

Christopher Buehlman - Those Across the River

F.G. Cottam - 1) Dark Echo and 2) The House of Lost Souls

T (10040604) I can't edit my comment for some reason, but A Winter Haunting, Dark Echo and The House of Lost Souls deal with ghosts and hauntings. Joe Hill's "Heart-shaped Box" is another good option as well.

Hester | 23 comments Dan Simmons Summer of Night was good and Susan Hill's The Women in Black is another good one.

message 12: by T (new)

T (10040604) Ah! Thanks for the Simmons recommendation, Hester! I did not realize A Winter Haunting was Part 2. However, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone.

Oh, I didn't realize that Summer of Night had a sequel. Thanks for letting me know, I'll have to read it.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 78 comments a short story, but one that chilled me to the bone : The Winds of Marble Arch and Other Stories

Debra | 2 comments Ghost Story - Peter Straub
Give the story time, it takes awhile to ramp up to the "fear factor".

Another novella a friend recommended to me is Unrelenting Terror by P.S. Power. I haven't read this yet but the reviews are interesting. The book is an experimental novel meant to cause the reader to experience a haunting.

how long? i tried it out and didnt like the style. I keep hearing to give it time... over and over again, keep hearing this. granted i hardly got into it. so my fault. I do hear its the ALL TIME BEST ghost story.

how about the shinning?

Philippa | 8 comments I enjoyed Dark Matter a lot. I read it whilst taking a bath and I got so scared that I had to get up to make sure the door was locked! Unusual for a ghost story too as it's set in the Arctic.

Jason (skinnydippingintobooks) | 234 comments The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson might scare you.

Anne Conley (anneconley) | 3 comments I find that the ambiance of my own home has a lot to do with what I'm reading. I recently scared the crap out of myself reading the Terror Experiment Series by Karina Halle (I think), but I read it while listening to the soundtrack to Dracula, which ramped it up quite a bit...

message 21: by Erin (new)

Erin | 17 comments I love scary and I really enjoyed many of the selections above. Another is House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski, kind of a psychological twist on the standard "haunted house" story. It's quite long, though.

message 22: by Jaye (new)

Jaye I also recommend The House Next Door.

Here's a listopia for haunted houses:
