Hey guys! So Google+ has created "communities" that are basically enhanced forums:
https://plus.google.com/communities/

I'm looking for feedback about creating one for this group! Mainly:
1) Would you guys participate, or is it redundant with this site
2) Would any of the features make the Hangouts (official and unofficial) easier to connect and coordinate?
3) Are there any people who could help mod it since I don't really have the bandwidth to do it?

Let me know what you think!
OXOX
Felicia

Jute | 238 comments I would participate, but you might want to consider if things get too fragmented with people coming here and also the Geek and Sundry forums.

There are some nice features here to help us keep track of the books we are reading that aren't included in the Google Communities.

But on the other hand the Communities have some things that also aren't here.

If you do decide to do it and you need mod help, I'll volunteer.

Thanks Jute! We added the page and we'll see how people use it. The most useful thing could be creating Hangouts with community members?
https://plus.google.com/communities/1...

We'll see how it works, and if you'd like Mod status just post in the thread over there that I create and we'll set it up. Thanks!

Heather Finley (heatherfinley) | 49 comments I like the format of it since it has more of a social media feel than on here. Think it could be fun as another tool to connect with everyone.

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments My opinion? Having things spread out in two different places feels like too much for a monthly book club.

Thank you so much Felicia!

Mike | 34 comments *hiss* I don't have OCD but it's acting up anyway. Heheh… Kinda curious if it'll turn into something other then a hangout jump-point. Maybe if there's a plug-in for hangouts, people could create them from here? Random thought.

The fragmentation is definitely a concern - but I think that there are plenty of people out there who follow Geek & Sundry and may be curious about VF but they aren't really readers or don't want to join Goodreads for whatever reason. This gives them an opportunity to participate.

Judging from the traffic so far, I think most people will still continue to discuss here, which is fine. But having the G+ Community will hopefully help build more local groups. I'm going to do what I can to cross-post local events and make sure people from both GR and G+ know if there are local groups in their area - so that's a definite bonus. :)

Lauren (girllawrin) | 37 comments I think a G+ community is a great idea. I think for people who joined goodreads only for this book club might find this more inviting or easier.

I always have time to help if it's needed!

Nic (nicmo) | 93 comments The Federal Triangles have a G+ group! We meet during the live chat and type chat. We also meetings in the DMV area. We find that this is easier for DC/NoVA/MD people to stay together and chat. Our link is: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communiti...

Nicole you might want to post that link each month in the monthly hangout list, I think people will be more likely to find links to local groups there!
And if anyone ever finds a better site to support the local groups please let me know! I am too frustrated by the fact we can't organize in a better way due to infrastructure :)

Nic (nicmo) | 93 comments great idea! I will see what I can find to contribute suggestions of alternatives.

Short of making your own website/blog from scratch, I don't think there's much you can do. Goodreads has decent forums but no static pages. I know at least one group has started their own Goodreads group, but that requires some know-how and babysitting, so it's not for everyone. Wikis are hard for novices to edit and need constant maintenance. Twitter is great for chatting but not archiving. Google+ is still unpopular in many circles (pardon the pun).

A couple of years ago I might have suggested a Facebook Group, but Facebook is…well, Facebook and seems intent on its own self-destruction (I don't have to tell you that). Add into the mix how everyone has there own personal preferences about how they get their information, and that some VF members are not tech savvy.

For now, I've put all the links I could find in a couple of hours into some tables on the VF Wiki under Vaginal Fantasy Communities. I separated out the groups that have never met or have stopped meeting for at least the last six months. I'll go through the individual threads later to find any that were missed; the list doesn't look like it's been updated for several months. I also put all the events I could find dated after July, 29th, 2014, onto their own page, Vaginal Fantasy Events, for easier reference and linked them back to their event notices or forum threads. Yay insomnia!

Daphne Chennault (daphnech) | 68 comments Yes, Facebook *does* seem to be intent on its own destruction. It's blatant sale of personal information and repeated disregard for the safety of others has made an anathema in my book.

A few groups have been using meetup.com such as the new Carnal in Columbia Book Club. It seems to meet the club's needs perfectly, but unfortunately it's not a free service ($150/year). I guess we'll have to wait for the free Google version of that. Get on that Google.
