I have read 31 items from the list. But IMHO that was not a very good list. What is #4 is Complete Works of Shakespeare compared with #98 Hamlet?
Or #33 Chronicles of Narnia to #36 tLtWatW?
I did this for Facebook and it really pissed people off. WHY? I don't know.I have read 74 books on the list.
I've read 46, but it is a really odd list. 'The DaVinci Code'? I did read it, but what is it doing on a list with 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Anna Karenina'? Strange!
I've read 24and it's not likely to go any higher. I don't see any of the others on this list on my T-B-R shelf, and I read mostly fantasy and scifi.
I read 28... not too shabby... better than 6... They need to have a list of Spanish and Latin American literature.
14. Crap. Half of these I've been wanting to read but have never gotten around to. Time to get started on that! (Or not, because I have other things that I have to read right now for school.. but maybe this summer!)
I've read 40. There were a couple I couldn't remember if I'd read or not, since I may have read them in school, so I didn't count them.
17 for me. Many of these books are in my library...does that count for anything? LOL...MAYBE someday I'll read them. Several, I've started, but just couldn't get into them enough to finish.
11... but hopefully after this year it will be a lot more. this year is my year of reading classics. hopefully tomorrow i will start on number 12 :)
I've read 26 of those. It'll be 27 because I'll be teaching Emma this fall. One of my favorite books on this list is Crime and Punishment by Dostoeyevsky. That book is amazing! Books I've read that I didn't like at all: Jude the Obscure by Hardy and Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. No one will ever convince me to pick up War and Peace after Anna Karenina.
I've read 42... (though a few are whole series, so seems unfair to count them as one book!!) Have had this as one of my TBR lists for a while now... have only read 3 more since I last checked though.
35 for me. Following suit with everyone else who has mentioned what strange titles they are. Not to mention that several are actual combinations of entire series, making the total much higher, haha
53-ish. It's hard to give myself full credit for an entire group - like the complete works of Shakespeare. I've read a lot, but I don't know if I can claim all. And I read about half the HArry Potter series. Actually, I think through the 4th book.
*chuckle* I get 6 in the first ten alone, plus most of the Bible.
In total I've read 35 fully.
Throw in half the Narnia's saga, and I've made big dent into Shakespeare's plays (haven't tried his poetry though).
I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath, so I'll get to dock another one yet :D
Interesting list. Many of those are in my TBR already. Though some are puzzling. Maybe it's some kind of most read list?

Holly Molly! That's some reading

I've read 15. Some are on my to-read list, but the reason I only read 15 is because I preferred to read other books from the authors listed here. I believe it's easier to judge a book or author that way. That way I can slink around the hype.
12. Although, I'm only 15, so a lot of these books have not been at my level until the last few years. I'll get around to them at some point.
17 (although I only read the first Harry Potter book and felt no inclination to start the second). In other news, why are there so many Jane Austen novels on this list? >_> *Agrees with Molly about randomness*
15, I have tried a couple of these but couldn't make it through. I do have a Tale of Two Cities on my ipad now ready to read.
46. Not too bad I think. Many were during school though and not selected by me. Nice list - gives me some more to put on the "to read" shelf. thanks
56.5 i am half way done with war and peace and my goal is to finish it by the end of the year. I read a little bit of it between every book i read.
I have read 8 of these books, it'd probably be 20 if I had applied myself in high school. I own at least a dozen more though.
I counted 39 as read, but some are from 40 years ago and I barely remember them. It does seem random, but some of my favorite books are on there including my all time favorite from my childhood, The Secret Garden! I'll have to make an effort to read more of these.
I have read 60 books, and have not been able to get through the several of the others. I really disliked quite a few of the books on the list. Who selected them?
Valerie wrote: "I've read 34 too! But quite a few more are on my TBR list. Very interesting that the BBC thought most had only read 6. Seems like most have read more than that."34 seems to be magic number=)
As for most people have only read 6 - it's likely correct, as here, on Goodreads (and especially in a 50 books a year group;) we are a very biased sample. We actually read. A lot.=)
Books mentioned in this topic
The Grapes of Wrath (other topics)Gone with the Wind (other topics)
The Road (other topics)
The Fellowship of the Ring (other topics)
Romeo and Juliet (other topics)

6 seems like a low number since many of these are typically read in grade school/high school. I wonder if the BBC meant 'most people' in Britain or if they were including other countries. The whole thing is a bit random.
