At Thorpe Park today

message 1003: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Great Jason. Btw. You bird knowledgable peeps. Saw a bird on the beach when visiting The Lizard in Cornwall. It looked heron like. Long thin legs and long pointy beak. Thinish body. However standing on a beach. Any ideas?

message 1004: by Jason (new)

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments Ostrich? I heard on the news one had escaped.

message 1005: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments A little small for that. It did look a bit like a small ostrich, thinner body though. Haha.

message 1006: by Jason (new)

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments Sandpiper or a Godwit maybe?

message 1007: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Snap. Just looked it up on rspb bird finder, after looking at some awful sites. Possibly a godwit. I didn't get close enough to see completely its plumage etc. Dog wanted to get of her lead to chase it so stayed clear. It had gone by time dog had calmed down enough to resist. Thanks Jason.

message 1008: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Never knew there was such a a bird btw. Great name.

Tytti | 494 comments If someone in your family is expecting their (first) child and loves the Moomins, this would probably be the perfect gift for them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXcFw...

(There is also a cheaper version with regular, non-brand stuff but that has even less to do with books...)

Any one else on here having trouble with notifications? I am getting them from threads, but not from comments on statuses and reviews?

message 1011: by Tytti (last edited Sep 23, 2015 12:51PM) (new)

Tytti | 494 comments There has been talk about that in the GR Feedback group: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Yes, I have reported it, they say it could take a while.

message 1013: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Ok with general notifications but not with messages

message 1014: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 494 comments I returned a couple of books to my library and noticed that they had started to loan out umbrellas, too. Apparently they started it today.

I thought it was a great because I don't like to carry an umbrella even when it's rainy, my coat is good enough, but then I have a problem with keeping the books dry if it starts to rain. So yeah, a good idea, IMO.

Been out this evening to a lecture on this:

Amazing project.

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments I don't understand why you would want a 1000mph car, max speed in the UK is 70mph. Seems silly to me, and how is it gonna handle all the speed bumps?

Speed bumps are bad enough in a normal car!

If anyone has had other members asking to vote on a specific book in the Fiction Poll, can you PM me?

Who is liking the new layout on here? I like the font, but it all feels a bit washed out to me. Have had to adjust the brightness on my screen to see if that helped.

message 1023: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 494 comments It's better now when they changed it somehow. Before some letters were missing a half making it very difficult to read and especially type. Still there are problems, the font is too small in some places and the brightness is too much.

message 1024: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
At least they didn't use Comic MS...

message 1025: by Jason (new)

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments Yeah too bright for me, should have the option to change themes ourselves.

message 1026: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) It's better now that they've made some changes, but I still feel like this is not friendly to people who have eyesight problems. I am short-sighted, which is not so bad, but still I found myself more comfortable before, with the old layout and design.

What is it with this then? Was just coming on to post exactly the same about font, I've not been on for a few days other than briefly on the app so hadn't noticed the change until today. My brightness feels about the same as before (I think!)

The more I read it, the worse it gets. I now have a headache from the brightness so I see what you mean! Ugh.

message 1030: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
They have made some improvements, but it still feels like the brightness is turned up to 11!

Do like the font though.

message 1031: by Tytti (last edited Dec 17, 2015 09:25AM) (new)

Tytti | 494 comments I think the font is bigger, or better somehow, than it was, though it should be the same size in this comment box, too.

I would have still preferred for example a reading challenge based on pages in addition to books, and some other modifications that shouldn't be too difficult to do. I sometimes wonder does anyone working (or programming) for GR actually use the site. I could give a long list of things that should be improved, I would even call them bugs. Like I don't think the sorting actually works in many places.

message 1032: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments I'm on the app and, sadly, haven't noticed anything. Am I just being ignorant? Or is the app the same?

message 1033: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod

Milestones is a fantastic place. You going there to see the grotto?

I recommend getting there for when it opens, can get really busy.
