Aaaah! Never did get that one, thanks Jason!
I probably wouldn't have guessed that one, either, thanks.Finnish Tolkien fans queued for tickets to the movie: http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2014/... My friend was kind of sorry that it was probably their last time. He went there on Thursday.
Just spent an excellent evening at our local theatre. Saw The Woman in Black - great production and impressive acting.
I like Marcus. I went to what would have an extraordinarily dull legal profession awards event (mega yawn) and he was the host. He took the you know what out of all these obscure award categories. Enough that it was funny, not so far as to belittle the achievements of the winners. Careful line to tread and he got it just right.
I do like Marcus Brigstock. I remember seeing him for the first time on tv in 'We are History' - so funny!
Pamela wrote: "Just spent an excellent evening at our local theatre. Saw The Woman in Black - great production and impressive acting."I saw it in September. Was a bit disappointed myself, I think I figured out the plot way too early. I saw another play last year with the same actors and it was much scarier.
Happy New Year to everyone especially the "mods" who work so hard to keep this group interesting and the challenges stimulating!
Thank you Gail, that is kind. This is a lovely group to be a part of, a real range of readers and reads and the credit on the challenges goes to Paul in the main as he is always on the look out for new ideas which keeps it all interesting.
Jason, and others interested in War and Peace.... I am genuinely excited about this radio adaptation.

I'll second that!
I'll second that!
Just want to pick brains please. I noticed yesterday that I had a lot of duplicates in my listings on here. Several are deliberate, but mostly the duplicates were not ones I've added myself. Books on my "to read" list are turning up as a duplicate on "read".
Is this a known glitch, and is there anything I can do to avoid it?
Also, my notification settings keep flipping to "individual email" from "notification only" which is even more annoying that the duplicates issue!
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light.

I think I have noticed something like that when I have tried to add books to another shelf from some list. It doesn't add the book I already have marked as to-read, it adds the edition on the list.
Today my updates were in Chinese. I showed my kids to confirm, just in case I was tripping. It soon went back to English.
Hi *waves*,So sorry for such a long absence, throwing myself back in and hope to catch up with what's been happening. Love the look of the new challenges and i will be joining in with those. Will have to incorporate work texts into my reads this year.
Wishing you all a belated happy New Year and hope you all had a lovely Christmas x
So cold where I live in the US. I was thankful to find a new friend to walk with, however we walked in subzero temps this week. We were walking in a metro park- absolutely beautiful. Saw two doe, that stood only 15 ft. away. Tonight a windchill advisory, - 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sorry, with a windchill. :) Still very cold. The wind makes it difficult to be outside for very long so no walking today.
Yeah, well, our limit for outdoor sports at school was around 0 degrees F (without the windchill). And I remember walking/riding a bike to school/work when it was around -40 F (without). But we didn't have to spend the breaks outside when it was that cold. But I do remember running for lunch because we didn't feel like putting all our clothes on for such a short trip.
Is it usually that cold where you live? Friday many schools were cancelled here due to the temps. Tomorrow it will be warmer in the 20s.
Not really, especially where I live now. We have had about -5 F this year. But in some parts of the country it's not that unusual, -25 F is common for every year. It's about -35 F at the moment somewhere, the record for this winter. It's been about 35 F here again but it's supposed to get colder tomorrow, 0 F. And then warmer again. The second weird winter in a row, hardly any snow, either...Heh, I have never heard of schools being closed because of the weather. Well maybe one winter but if that was the case it was because it was about -60 degrees F in Lapland and the distances are long. The busses don't work properly in those temperatures so kids couldn't get to school. (Well nothing really works, except maybe Ladas and reindeer.)
Closed a lot in England, can't say about Wales, Ireland or Scotland- think they are hardier there. They aren't closed because of cold but because of snow. Transport can't seem to get anywhere when it snows a lot. When I was a child we walked to school in thick snow. I guess times change. Maybe also because teachers lived relatively locally then, now many have to drive as they live a long way away.
Schools close near me when we get a little bit of snow, it because the teachers do not live locally, some travel about 100 miles to get to the school, crazy stuff.I work at a school and it never closes because it is a boarding school, so as many people as possible have to try and make it in.
A few years ago BBC reported that the last time Helsinki Airport was forced to close due to weather (and a technical failure at the same time) was 2003, for half an hour. Apparently it was considered news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europ...Hah, and CNN, too, has reported: http://everwas.com/2011/02/helsinki-s...
I remember my father having to take the bus sometimes so he could get to his school because the car wouldn't start. That is the biggest problem, modern cars can't handle the temperatures.
We British (esp us English) can't do extremes of weather. We are used to lots of different weather in a week - but all quite mild. Flooding excepted atm. I choose to live in Cornwall as I hate cold. It rarely goes much below freezing.
I remember a Spanish exchange student who visited his home during the Christmas break and complained from there (Southern Spain?) how cold he was. Back here he just wore a t-shirt at home. When I was in England I was the only one who used gloves in May...
It wasn't that warm in my opinion, so that's why I was wearing them. Some were wearing winter coats, too. The same in Italy in January, we Finns all had gloves and hats but saw kids without them (or at least without gloves). It's the same when watching movies. They claim it's cold but they are wearing (or not wearing) something weird. I remarked how normal it looked when I watched some Swedish movie filmed during the winter and you could see how used to it they were.
I agree Tytti. Lots of children (teenagers) go to school with no coats/nothing but school tshirts and trousers on - just a macho teenage thing I guess. However, many young Mums let their children be pushed around in buggies with no gloves on. Their fingers are blue with cold and they are crying. Mums seem oblivious and are telling them not to cry.
