Elizabeth (merelyreading) It does look an interesting site. Will have a proper look when I have more time later today. Thanks for link Paul.

I love to do this, although I use the list randomiser..."

Titania, your post made me laugh! Being a Libran, I can be a terrible procrastinator and decision maker, and will often spend ages doing exactly that, and not actually reading!

I have got this to read soon, Wait: The Art and Science of Delay; just not sure when to start...

Ha ha ha ha.

I simply MUST read that book, and have already made my reservation at the library. ;-)

Just walked to my big Sainsburys two miles away, ostensibly to air the baby, get a bit of exercise and pick up some more milk. Came back with two books. Sigh...

What did you get?

Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty, plus The Rosie Project, thanks to Elizabeth's wily ways /recommendation! Will fit them into my square somehow. I blame the library for their failure to get Splendid Suns to me, I'm dithering over too many choices now!

message 509: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
And did you remember the milk?

message 510: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I bought Apple Tree Yard this week too. Starting it as soon as I've finished May We Be Forgiven.

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
I have Apple Tree Yard as well, and going to work it into my square but unlikely to read too soon because I am on library return deadlines for a couple of books I have out at the moment.

I am about half way through Rosie Project now, going to suggest it tonight at Book Club but I have a feeling a few others have already finished so it may not be selected.

Paul wrote: "And did you remember the milk?"

Haha! I did, although I quite often don't in these situations :)

Any ideas how to get Apple Tree Yard into the square? I think it's probably a stretch to call it crime - it's more of a thriller, isn't it. May just have to be a free read.

I've got the Rosie Project for new author.

message 513: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Isn't it a Richard and Judy book choice for Winter 2014?

Linda Kelly I'd say that was a fair exchange Paul.

message 518: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Not Dracula by any chance, was it?

Ha ha!! No. The Hall has a secondhand bookshelf, and I got The Age of Miracles for 30p.

message 520: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) That sounds an interesting book. Might look out for that one in the library.

I got A Thousand Splendid Suns and A Life Like Other People's yesterday.

Has been on the list for a while. Jo read it recently and enjoyed it

message 522: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Hmm, perhaps we could drum up some interest in a read long for it, for the next quarter?

Does anyone subscribe to New Books Magazine: http://www.newbooksmag.com

message 524: by Elizabeth (new)

I am thinking about it. I sometimes read the copy in the library

Gail | 127 comments I was wondering about a sub to the London Review of Books, does anyone else subscribe?

message 527: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments I've just been having a look through the Recommended section on the app. I've only read one book by Kristin Hannah, which was Firefly Lane (gave it 2 stars as I didn't think much of it) and for some reason Goodreads seems to think I want to read shedloads more of hers. There's about 4 of her books in my contemporary recommendations. GRRR!

It's been rather cold of late though hasn't it?

In other news, I bought a new car last week! Still getting used to it as it's all technologically advanced (I was driving a 2003 citroen xsara previously!)

Meanwhile, in the UK it is just rain, rain and more rain, oh, and high tides and strong winds and coastal and river flooding to an extraordinary degree. We've barely dropped below freezing all winter.

It's miserable weather. Have got to go out in it shortly! I was going to go shopping in Salisbury this morning, but have changed my mind. Not worth the risk at the moment.

I'm walking the dog in two minutes, in a break in the weather, we will both come back covered in mud of course, as usual, thank heavens we have a hot tap/shower hose outside to de-mud!

Happy Birthday to your daughter, Paul. My son is ten this year. TEN for heavens sake! He's still my baby (but clearly I am not allowed to say as much, or behave so as to demonstrate this in public!)

message 545: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Happy birthday to your daughter, Paul. My eldest is going to be eight in a couple of months' time. No idea where the time's gone - so fast.

Hope all those in the North of England are not suffering too much with the storm. We have had it pretty bad here, but not the level that you are getting.

message 548: by Jo (new)

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
We had a mere glimpse of it today, compared with what we got on Friday, which in turn was not much compared to the South and West.

We had approximately an hour of extraordinary wind and rain, but it went as fast as it arrived (Essex) and thankfully I have seen no damage yet and the water is able to drain away mostly.

message 549: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) My mother-in-law says the storm in Swanage today was the worst ever yet. She was too frightened to go outside in it, having nearly been killed last week by a tile crashing off the roof and missing her by inches.

That sounds terrible! Hope that her nerves have settled a little. The waves at Chesil were huge:
