Introduce Yourself
HiI'm English, but have lived in Colorado for decades following many years spent in Canada. I'm an author of five books (fiction and non-fiction) - all co-authored with Richard Starks. I'm a member of the Authors Guild and the independent Book Publishers Association. I'm also a reader! Some of my favorite authors are: Pat Barker, (her World War 1 trilogy remains a favorite of mine); David Lodge, Ian McEwan, Sarah Waters and Frederik Backman.
Hello! Thank you for this chance to do a simple introduction. My name is Julie Scolnik, and I am professional flutist and founding artistic director of Mistral Music. My memoir, Paris Blue, was published a month ago by Koehler Books, and I thrilled to finally share this story after 40 years of its lingering in the corridors of my psyche. It is set against a backdrop of classical music and Paris in the late 70's and is about the grip of first love and the role of memory in our lives. I hope you might take a peek at the book trailer and some of my endorsements on my author site: www.JulieScolnik.com, including one from John Irving. It has been beyond heart-warming to hear from readers that they read it in two days, and couldn't put it down. THANK YOU!

Everyone is invited to join. Reviews and comments on relevant books are welcome.

Hello, I'm Davinder Kaur. I'm a new author and just published "Forced to Marry Him: A Lifetime of Tradition and the Will to Break It". I love inspirational books, and I'm drawn to books that speak from the heart, where one can learn about life and the struggles we face. Our stories are often the stories of so many others and we have to share them. How will anyone learn, unless we speak about our stories?
Michael wrote: "Nice to make the introduction, Davinder.Best,

Author of Chosen's Beautiful Heart"
Thanks you, Michael. I'm glad to receive my first response. I'm new here to GoodReads, so I'm still learning all about it, kind of lost.
Davinder, I'm new as well. And probably equally lost in the universe named Oprah. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will show us around. And see our books?

Greetings and Salutations from Seattle: It is now Autumn. Winter is approaching. I find that I am now 92. Yes, I am in the winter of my life. Whaaaat? So soon, I marvel? My bucket list is still very long. Alas. I have thus written a book called "I Don't Want to Go." It actually pertains closely to you too, no matter how much younger you may be than I am. I have performed a great deal of research for you. Indeed! The 35 chapters cover a lot of unbiased territory, concerning matters like world religions, atheism, astrology, psychic mediums, paranormal paraphernalia, aliens, life itself, death, and then . . . ? We only know for absolute certain that we are all going to be dead (or resurrected?) a very, very, very long time. I also talk about my own life, and add comments here and there, so that this won't be like a textbook. The easy-read 228 page book is on Amazon.com, of course.
Hi, Greetings from Vancouver Island. My name is Debbie and I'm an author. My short story collection about peri-menopausal women, called "Your Body Was Made for This", has recently been published by Ronsdale Press in Canada. At sixty-three, I am now post-menopausal, and enjoying a freer and fuller life because of it. I look forward to connecting with other readers in this forum. Keep reading, Debbie
I'm Hunter, from Houston Texas. I enjoy many authors, including Joel C. Rosenberg, Clive Cussler (RIP), James Rollins, and Brad Meltzer. I love suspense, Christian fiction and historical fiction.
My parents, who were WWII refugees from Croatia, bought the Model Motel, located at 10601 San Fernando Road in Pacoima in 1952. I am the youngest of their four children. Here's an excerpt from my book "So, Like Dude... What it Was Like Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the 50's, 60's and 70's":Chapter 1
I was in a dark and cozy room tucked into my bed when I heard voices outside my window. I couldn’t make out what they were saying. The roof of my room was suddenly being peeled back like a sardine can and an intense white light began flooding in. I heard murmuring and saw a couple people staring down at me. They were wearing blue surgical masks and gloves. One of the guys reached into my room and grabbed me. He held me firmly in his hands and slowly pulled me into the light. I was blinded by the brilliant white light! Suddenly, I realized that there was something wrong. I looked down at my stomach and saw that there was a cord coming out of it! Holy cow! I was just being born!
NEWS FLASH: On January 31, 1957, a Douglas DC-7B operated by Douglas Aircraft Company was involved in a mid-air collision with a United States Air Force Northrop F-89 Scorpion and crashed into the schoolyard of Pacoima Junior High School located in Pacoima, a suburb in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. - Wikipedia
I was five years old and just getting out of Haddon Avenue Elementary School. As I was walking home, I was seeing all this pink stuff hanging in trees and blowing in the wind down Terra Bella Street. So, what was up with that? When I got home, my mom was all freaked out and telling me that a plane fell on Pacoima Junior High School and my brother, John, was in the hospital. She started telling me that she and my dad were going to visit him and that I should stay at home with my grandma who was busy praying on her rosary beads. So, this was a total drag and life would never be the same for our entire family.
John was lying in a hospital bed with body parts that were char broiled. Doctors were saying that he might lose an arm. Meanwhile, I was thinking: “How do you lose an arm?” I had lost toys and things like that but I never lost any body parts. My folks told me that they wanted me to go to the same hospital and have my tonsils pulled out. I was thinking: “Hell no! I don’t even know what a freaking tonsil is but I don’t want to go to a place where people are losing limbs. No way dude! I wanted to remain whole and keep all my body parts. What was up with that?”
Well, I lost that argument and the next thing I knew this doctor dude was asking me to lay down while he jammed a needle in my arm and asked me to count backwards from 100. Who does that? So, I started counting backwards and before I got to 96 the lights went out bro. When I snapped out of the darkness I was lying on a hard ass operating table with the same damn blue surgical masks and gloves staring down at me. Then some nurse started telling me some stupid ass story about three little bears and I was thinking: “Had the whole world gone mad?”
The next thing I knew, I was lying in a hospital bed with some nice old guy lying in a bed next to mine asking me if I was all right. Like dude, I was in a damn hospital feeling like someone just ripped my throat out and I was hurting so badly that I couldn’t answer his question if I wanted to. So, I just laid there pondering my fate and wondering what the hell was going to happen to me next. Sheesh! What a nightmare!
So, I finally went home. Home was the Model Motel located at 10601 San Fernando Road between Pierce Street and Terra Bella Street directly across from a set of railroad tracks and Whiteman Airport in Pacoima. We lived in a two bedroom one bath California bungalow and I got to sleep in the living room on a scratchy pink couch that folded down into a bed. I hated that bed. There was a big gap down the middle of the damn thing and sometimes my arm would get wedged in that gap. It also had big ass buttons on it that would get jammed between my toes while I was sleeping. The stupid sheets never stayed on it and I ended up dancing cheek to cheek with that crappy excuse for a bed. I hated sleeping on that couch so much that I peed on it every night. My folks took me to a freaking doctor to see if there was anything that could be done to stop me from peeing in bed. All I could think was, dudes, just get me a real bed and maybe I’ll stop peeing on it.
My oldest brother, Tony, was the first one to check out of the Model Motel after graduating from San Fernando High school. He ended up getting his girlfriend pregnant and moving in with her family. They had lots of land and horses and their property was right next to Hansen Dam Park so they were able to ride on trails that wound through there. Tony would take me over there sometimes and let me ride with him on the back of his horse, Babe. It was totally cool!
John was evicted from the Model Motel next because he dropped out of high school and just got drunk all the time. My folks shipped him to his Uncle who lived in Germany. Dude, I could have told them that it was a bad idea sending a budding young alcoholic to Germany where they drink beer out of big ass steins any time of the day or night! Who would do that?
If you would like to continue reading my book, click on the link below and it will take you to Amazon Books where you can buy a paperback copy of it or download it onto your Kindle.

Hello, everyone. My name is Colin Rigby. I fear that I have jumped the gun a bit, as I posted in this group under 'new authors seeking a review' where I have submitted a fairly detailed account of my books, before actually introducing myself in these columns.
I have always been an avid reader since youth, I recall my teacher at school recommending anything by Neville Shute, so I immediately devoured a lot of his output. I can only remember 'On the Beach', but I did enjoy them. I haven't read any of his since my teens so I am not sure how I would take to them now. I would be interested to know if anybody is reading him?
Later, my tastes varied from Shakespeare (yes it did) Dickens and Tolstoy to Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Peter Cheyney, and pretty well anything I happened to see on the local library shelves, which in those days were entirely concerned with books, and if you started a conversation with someone the librarian would indicate that silence was required.
My more recent readings have veered somewhat towards non fiction, especially history. Max Hastings is an author I respect in this genre.
I have more recently, though, read quite a few books by Robert Rankin, whose style of humour I enjoy, and by Robert Harris.
His book about the infamous Dreyfuss affair I thought was outstanding (Title : An Officer and a Soldier) and gripped me from page 1. I was not QUITE so impressed with his book about Munich, although I enjoyed it.
I haven't tried any of his more recent books, and I am hoping that readers might make some recommendations here, as I am trying to return to my reading habits, which have lapsed a bit recently.
This arose when I actually started writing myself. This was not because of the time taken to write the actual book, but the huge number of hours preparing the books for self-publication, primarily with regard to proof reading. Not a job I would apply for.
I was soon confronted by this problem even before I even thought of actually publishing anything. I had written a book which I called 'The Saga of Gabriel'. Purely out of vanity, I thought it would be nice to have it actually printed as a hardback book, and I had 8 copies made, at a cost of £25 each! I got a proof copy and read it through very carefully, having already proof read it numerous times before submission. To my amazement I discovered a couple of typos. I corrected them and resubmitted. When I got the actual books, I discovered 2 more typos, which will be there for eternity.
Some time later, a friend to whom I had given a copy pointed out that I had written in the preface the phrase 'As the story enfolds!' Now I DO know the difference between enfold and unfold, but how could I, after numerous readings, have missed this glaring error? I remain baffled, but would like to hear of the experiences of other authors about doing proof reading yourself. All those blue and wavy lines on word processors are very useful but they are just the start. If you mistype post when you meant pot, for example, it is still a word so it won't put up a red flag, even though the sentence then is nonsense, and as for incorrect spacings, missing speech marks, apostrophes in the wrong place or where they shouldn't be at all, well...
The Gabriel book, much modified and up dated, eventually found its way on Amazon. I have just relaunched it with a new title and additional material, and it is now called 'Judgement Day and the End of Heaven'. I still came across 2 typos. Will they never end?
Well, I hope this new edition is entirely free of error.
I was always an optimist.
Anyway, please refer to the link on this group I mentioned at the start if you think you might like to know a bit more about my books. There is also an Amazon link, and I DID introduce myself on Goodreads home page!

Hello! New to the group and looking forward to connecting with other readers! I don't really have a favorite book or author, though I gravitate towards contemporary fiction by women writers. Currently reading Normal Rules Don't Apply and just finished Let Us Descend, Eastbound and Roman Stories.

I am 30 years old and reside in a semi urban district of the country called Narayanganj. My favourite genres in case of books are historical fictions, non-fictions and short stories. Sattyajit Roy, Humayun Ahmed, Erich Maria Remark, Harrari, Elif Shafak (Want to visit Istanbul!) are some of my most favourite authors. I believe I love those types of books most that introduce me to new ideas, way of thinking. " Sapiens " comes to mind immediately.
Finance graduate and Banker by profession. Nice to meet you all.
