message 1711: by David (new)

David Jr. | 10 comments Hello all. I'm Dave and I am joining from a cafe in Boulder Colorado. I am traveling the country in my van so Boulder is temporary.

Favorite book? Hmm... My Ishmael? Favorite Author would be Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

So.... I recently listened to Stephan King's "On Writing" and was immediately moved to start writing fiction. This is WAY out of my comfort zone!!! One of his biggest pieces of advice was to read, A LOT! So I built a bookshelf in my van and started filling it up. I am trying to put more novels in it than non fiction so I need more suggestions for books!! That's why I am here.

message 1714: by Holly (new)

Holly (whatwouldhollydo) Aloha!

I'm Holly and am looking to get involved with a new Book Club. I'm a little worried about this Club as once Oprah announces a book, it becomes pretty hard to find. But I'll give it a try. In the meantime, I read quite a bit on my own, while blogging and working my day job. Looking forward to the new conversations!

eileen l gaudette-crowe | 4 comments I'm Eileen, I've been an avid reader my entire life. I love many genres, but I'd have to say historical fiction is my favorite, followed by crime drama. I'm also a huge fan of fantasy, sci fi, and classics like Emma, The Brothers Dostoevsky, and Waiting For Godot. In other words, I pretty much like all types.
I'm currently reading Last Car to Elysian Fields by James Lee Burke. He writes crime drama featuring David Robichaux, a Cajun detective from the New Orleans area. The characters are fabulous, and the stories are engrossing. I've read and reread all of his books.
I'm looking forward to sharing some of my favorites, and finding some new ones here!

message 1723: by Holli (last edited Aug 16, 2016 06:29AM) (new)

Holli | 2 comments I am just returning to reading after having eye problems/surgery. HOORAY! As a retired "favorite" librarian, I won't list my most beloved books because that would be like listing 5 of your children and omitting the 1,000+ others! My interests span time and many genres. Some YA titles I can almost quote verbatim! I read books aloud to my late husband on road trips covering hundreds of titles. I nearly famished while I could not read. So glad to be able to read again and entertain your wonderful suggestions!

message 1724: by Marsha (new)

Marsha TY! I enjoy a fiber-art, Rughooking. I listen to books as I hook. If you get the app Overdrive, put in your library, you can borrow titles. It's wonderful: two of my most treasured likes at once! I even speed up narration so I can add even more titles.

message 1738: by D.A. (new)

D.A. Swanson (goodreadscomdaswan2) | 18 comments Hello, My name is Dale Swanson, I am from Minnesota and I love my current read, “The Orenda”– by Joseph Boyden. He writes this novel from the viewpoints of several story characters. Another great read is “Neither Wolf Nor Dog”–by Kent Nerburn.

I’m wondering if any writers out there have had a book published—not self-published—by a small traditional press and found it nearly impossible to get national exposure? Or even review copies distributed? It appears that publicity and marketing are non-existent and totally reliant on the author when a small regional publisher has the contract. My historical fiction novel about the cause and backlash of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 is closing on 3,000 copies and made the Minneapolis Star Tribune best-read list, yet not a dime has been spent to broaden distribution. Any advice?

Terri Kleinberg | 2 comments Hello Everyone, I'm Terri Kleinberg. I'm writing to you from Tigard, Oregon, this is pronounced with a long 'I' such as 'TIE'. I am what they used to call a voracious reader. I sort of define that as someone who will read almost anything, I've been known to read hairspray cans in a pinch. the genre is not much of a barrier to me. I usually read by author my favorites being Urban Fantasy writers such as Faith Hunter, Jim Butcher, and Carrie Vaughn. I also enjoy Diana Gabaldon, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, and many others. I see this group as a good way to broaden my interests and expand my ability to express myself.

Christopher Olech | 1 comments I am from London Ontario Canada, my favorite book is The Art of War. I am an author of The Fighter Within which was released a few months ago and already won the prestigious Canada Book Award. It is a tale of my travels chasing the best boxing/mixed martial arts fighters as I train with them and gain insightful stories and end up piercing through something more than I ever imagined, inspiration that exudes beyond the fighting sports. I traveled to far away places chasing some of the best champions, this is not just a book for MMA fans but anyone willing to take a once in a life time journey and learn great life and business lessons along the way. Thank you all for your time. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
