Hello new friends! My name is Heather and I am from Maryland. I have loved to read my entire life and find it an escape that is better than other forms of entertainment that are mindless. I have always wanted to join a local book club but have not found any (we live in the country). Hoping that this is fun and I make some new book loving friends. I like to read uplifting and engaging books-not mystery or thriller. Just a really good story...

Hi Anamika,
After reading your post, and besides, wanting to welcome you to the reading group, I thought of a book that you might very well enjoy. I read this book a couple of years ago, and I was so enthralled by it; it was hard to forget the protagonist, Anahita, after I finished the book, THE MIDNIGHT ROSE, by Lucinda Riley. The protagonist, Anahita, is from India. The story tells of her love relationship with a well-bred Englishman, and what ensues in her life, his life, and many years later. I think that you will greatly enjoy this fine book!

Welcome to the book club Julia! I just have to share with you my absolute love of the late Dr. Maya Angelou too! Her writings seem to resonate every fiber of my soul. As an African American woman, this most wonderful writer echoed so much of what I have thought and felt as a woman of colour. A book that I loved and have reread time and again; one that you, too, might enjoy is: REDEMPTION SONG, by Bertrice Berry. Besides being an unexpected love story, the book shares with the reader a rich, but painstaking history of African Americans. Enjoy!

message 1683: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Fox-Salah | 1 comments My name is Colleen, and I live in Rochester, New York. My favorite author is Hermann Hesse, and Steppenwolf changed my life. I will also read every book that Toni Morrison writes. I am very picky about the fiction I read for better or worse, and it is hard for me to read beyond the first ten pages if I'm not struck dumb with awe in my head and my heart. I would say my favorite genre is memoir since this demands writers be poignant and poetic. I'm glad to be a part of this group!

Patty Smith (pinkpurlandprose) Hello everyone! I am joining you from Toronto, Canada and like all of you, reading in one of my passions. I have to say that I am loyal to no one genre but rather read whatever strikes my fancy. The one author that I have been reading since I was young (although I can't say favourite, maybe one of my favourites?) is Stephen King. What is glorious about now is not only do we get to know authors from all over the globe, the access to reading has never been better.

I have just written a book called Why Not? Conquering the Road Less Traveled. It's about growing up with Cerebral Palsy an still having a 44 year successful award winning career in radio. The book has won a Rraders' favorite honorable mention award and has received their 5 star award. In general it's rating is 4.9 stars on Amazon. For each book sold $1 is going to Variety Club. I attended camp as a child there and they were instrumental in me being able to walk. How does one get Oprah interested in looking at your book. Thanks for any help you can provide.

message 1696: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone. I’m Eli. I’m a British writer/author, and I currently live in Hampstead in northwest London, although I was born on the south coast of England. I wouldn’t really say I have a favourite author as such, because I really admire many different authors for their individual styles. However, I can list a couple of my favourite books.

I read John Fowles’ “The Collector” when I was only 13 (I stole my father’s copy), and it scared the crap out of me, but it also inspired me to write a novel in a very similar genre, even if I did take almost 40 years to get around to it. Another book that had a huge impact on me – in fact it’s really the book that inspired me to become a writer myself – was William Goldman’s “Marathon Man”, which was eventually made into a very good movie in 1976 staring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, and Roy Scheider.

It was actually the last movie Olivier filmed before his death, and he was so frail during shooting that he needed to have someone standing by with a chair so he could sit down between takes, just to make sure he didn’t fall down! Not that you’d ever guess it though, because he was such a consummate actor that he still managed to turn out one of the best performances of his career playing Dr. Christian Szell, a former Nazi SS Dentist who experimented on Jewish inmates at Auschwitz during WWII. Goldman is also a very accomplished screenwriter of course, as well as a novelist and playwright, and has won two Oscars for his screenplays of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), and “All The President’s Men” (1976), both of which starred Robert Redford.
