message 1168: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Williams (thatzsam) | 7 comments Hello, my name is Samantha and I live in Dallas, TX. I recently graduated from grad school and miss the round table discussions on literature and hoping to feel the void by joining this book club!

I enjoy reading African literature (Alan Paton, Peter Abrahams) and anything produced about life overseas. (I really like Khaled Hosseini).

message 1169: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments Hi, Samantha--I was an English major and did grad school in French lit, so I know what you mean about missing the class discussions. I'm in a couple of book clubs, so that's fun and something you might consider trying to organize for yourself in Dallas.

I loved _The Kite Runner_ and thought _A Thousand Splendid Suns_ was also very well written, but the unrelenting wife abuse in that one made it a grueling read for me. I like learning about people's lives in other cultures, and Hosseini's works are useful for that. I haven't read A. Paton or P. Abrahams. Which works of theirs would you recommend?

message 1170: by Karl (new)

Karl Drobnic | 66 comments Hi Samantha,

Welcome to Oprah's 2.0. My e-novel, "A Lesion of Dissent", is partially set in Africa, and I'd be honored if you'd take a look. There's a preview at
http://members.peak.org/~drobnik/tomo...

There's a generous free sample at Smashwords.com and there are links to the Kindle and Nook versions also. It's a full length novel, and is only 99 cents.

Best regards,

Karl

message 1171: by Dan (new)

Dan Arrow | 5 comments Hello everyone! I'm Dan Arrow from Southern California and I have been wandering around in life for the past 30 years. I used to be quite the introverted literary geek in high school, but broke the chains. Now, I'm backing into my corner again to read and find the peace I once knew. Currently, I enjoy reading anything other than all the books I was feed in all the years of doing business. So, I'm open to new subjects and find myself feeling like a kid in a candy store with all the material out there. Looking forward to communicating in a positive way in group discussions about particular books and authors. See you soon!

message 1172: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments Hi, Dan--What kinds of books are you most interested in exploring?

message 1173: by Dan (last edited Oct 24, 2013 11:26AM) (new)

Dan Arrow | 5 comments Thank you for asking! I am interested in love stories that depict a true awareness of what it might actually be. More on the psychological rather than sexual level. I've done my market research on the others, but may have to dabble in the history of romance to find something less shallow.

message 1174: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments I looked through my Goodreads "read" list for ideas for you, Dan, and it seems like there are a lot more stories of love gone wrong or of love based on physical attraction than convincing stories of true psychological romantic love. Pretty sad. One book I did give four stars (but don't remember in detail) was _The Feast of Love_ by Charles Baxter. I did read a book actually titled _The History of Love_ by Nicole Krauss, but I wasn't that impressed by it. An uber-popular memoir (probably more among women than men) that ends with successful love is _Eat Pray Love_. I did like that book a lot, but it really focused more on the protagonist/author's journey of self-discovery than on the love at the end. I guess a sense of love of self does have to come first before someone can find a true, healthy love relationship.

message 1175: by Dan (last edited Oct 24, 2013 02:34PM) (new)

Dan Arrow | 5 comments True. Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into them. The very reason I write in the romance fiction genre is because I am sad like you over the lack of ability to teach the attributes of LOVE through story. Hopefully, I'll be able to bridge the gap. Eat Pray Love will be first on my list. Thank you for your time. Dan
Update: Just bought it as an ebook. Will log my progress. Thx

message 1176: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments I hope you like it OK, Dan. It was a great cathartic book for me, but I'll be interested to see whether or not you enjoy it.

message 1177: by Dan (new)

Dan Arrow | 5 comments I'll update the status when and if it stirs me enough to cry.

message 1178: by Laura (new)

Laura (l-poulo) | 35 comments Maybe I should call it more healing than cathartic. I don't remember it making me cry, but I did find it inspiring. It'll be interesting to get a man's perspective on it, as I'm pretty sure it's a lot more popular among women. I haven't seen the movie (with Julia Roberts), but heard it wasn't very good, unfortunately.

message 1179: by Sara (new)

Hi Laura. French Lit sounds amazing. Exploring the world through lit, I love. I think I will have to try out a couple of book clubs and see which ones stimulate my mind the most. I would recommend "Cry,the Beloved County" by Paton.
