Bright Young Things
question
Ending
I too was a bit like that when I finished reading it. I kept looking for another chapter to really finish it.
I guessed that the note was thrown away by Jamie at the end and they just all lived there on the island together, like they had talked about earlier on in the book. I could have done with a little more, but I always think that about a book when I like it.

I like endings that make you ponder and this one certainly did that. I suspect they would have been rescued once the boat was spotted. A bit of a risk though - a high wind might have made the body fall out and there wasn't an endless supply of food on the island.
****spoilers****
I'm the same, I thought the ending was like someone forgot to add in the final chapter. It felt like the beginning of a trilogy to me although I'm sure its a stand alone. There's no explanation as to why they were chosen, who the guy upstairs actually was. What was his motivation for choosing them etc. The book was ok but left a lot of unexplained questions which was somewhat annoying :/ Not the best book from Scarlett Thomas in my opinion :(

I thought it was the perfect ending, anything else would just seem contrived or forced. I think it took courage to end it in such a way but it does make sense if you consider that the book was about their captivity with the named chapters explaining how they came to be in a position to be kidnapped and the numbered chapters being an account of that captivity. The moment the boat is is cast adrift they cease to be captives and so the story ends.
How about why they were kidnapped and who the dead guy was? Too many loose ends for me :(
.
agreed it annoyed me that Jamie just decided to throw the note away oh ill just make this big choice and now you are all my captives, hes no better then the dead guy.
