Thanks guys, Kathy that's a good suggestion, I'm also going to have a look for some of the upcoming ones and see if I cant pick them up.

So I decided I would start with a few of the short reads to up my total and read the little prince and the stranger today upping me to 45 read, I also downloaded and read 30% of Siddhartha and am hoping to get to Metamorphosis tomorrow.

I've read 30, but I'll be at 31 by the end of the night. I recently received a $50 Amazon gift card and I spent every cent on classic novels. It just so happens that all of the novels I purchased are on the group bookshelf. :)

Sue- I'd love to read Life on the Mississppi with you. I will plan on it. My favorites? I love Allende and to a certain extent Marquez. I nominated Cry The Beloved Country to give myself an excuse to reread it, and I also love Things Fall Apart.
I ordered from the library The Travels of Jamie McPheeters.
And baseball related books- The Natural, Shoeless Joe, etc.
I love reading about other cultures when I'm reading so that is my taste in classics as well.

Brina, I'm with you reading about other cultures. I chose 6 novels specifically with that in mind on my old & new challenge. One of them was The House of the Spirits which was first Allende novel. And speaking of baseball novels, it isn't a classic but have you read The Art of Fielding? I read it last year and really enjoyed it.

Laurie, House of the Spirits is sentimental to me because it introduced me to Allende and Latin American writers. Actually her book Daughter of Fortune is faster moving and I like it a little more but it starts a trilogy so when I reread it I know I will eventually have to read House of the Spirits also.
No, I have not read The Art of Fielding although it has been recommended to me. When I say baseball, I read a lot of player biographies and history of the game because I get withdrawal symptoms if I don't watch baseball for over 24 hours. Reading about it is the next best thing. Currently I have a historical mystery The Tomb that Ruth Built by Troy Soos.

I've checked the group list and I've read 26 so far ... it's interesting adding to my list of "read" and voting on which classics I liked best, because earlier on you've read only a few so the favourite stands well apart from the rest, then you read more and you get more favourites. I'm with you both on reading about other cultures and baseball. I've wanted to read an Isabel Allende book ever since I read her memoir My Invented Country: A Nostalgic Journey Through Chili . I'm not a fan of her far left politics, which permeate, as I'm a centrist, but her writing describing the physical landscape of Chili and it's people and cultures was superb. Her writing was so good that someday I have to read her fiction and someday I must visit Chile. I almost feel like I've been there after reading her book.

I'm not with her on her politics either but her writing is outstanding. Her memoir Sum of Our Days is so touching I feel like I know her family personally now. Looking forward to a buddy or group read of Life on the Mississippi in August. I should be nearly done with the buddy read of Gone With the Wind by then. Knock on wood, Go Cubs.
