Julie (servingbewks) | 4 comments I am reading The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown which I really like so far....it has a really unique narrative and is full of Shakespeare quotes but not in a pretentious academia way. Also reading a memoir about life in the CIA and The Stranger Beside Me, about Ted Bundy. A little too heavy, been watching too much Criminal Minds! I like to keep a few books on rotation.

I saw this at the store the other day. I think I should add it to my ever growing TBR pile. The Weird Sisters that is. Criminal Minds scares me enough that I can't read true crime also. =P

message 53: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Blanco (minx_marigold) At the moment I am reading Predestined (the second part of Abbi Glines' Existence Trilogy) and The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia by Samuel Johnson.

I too dislike criminal minds and my father who has been in law enforcement for 35 years refuses to watch criminal minds. They just take it too fat sometimes

Jettcatt | 10 comments At the moment i'm reading Gone Girl (so far a really good read), A christmas carol and have been trying to get into The name of the wind by Patrick Rothruss but am having trouble, the reviews are good so I'm determined to push on, not sure why I torture myself but have an obsession to finish books once started?? In a weird intelligent way quite sadisitic really...I must stop thinking out aloud.

message 56: by Rebeca (new)

Rebeca (rfamiliar) I tend to read several books at the same time. Currently, I'm reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and also Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant and Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller.
Once I finish one of these, I'm going to read Madame Bovary.

message 57: by Milena (new)

Milena | 1 comments Hi, everyone! I'm reading Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and I'm pretty satisfied with the most of the narrative I've already read. This is my first book, which has the length of more than 600 pages and I'm for sure not bored with it. I recommend the book to all of you, because it is one of these classics that should be read in the lifetime. Also the book gives perfect illustration and explanation of he Russian society during the late 19. century.

Tee I'm reading Roots by Alex Haley.

Oh I mean I do watch Criminal Minds. It actually has gotten a lot less scary. It seems after they had Tim Curry guest star, it calmed down.

I am reading Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter. It's on Boxall's 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list.

message 64: by Dori Nicole (new)

Dori Nicole (missmoptop) | 6 comments I just finished the dreadful "dead until dark" also known As the first book in the sookie stackhouse (true blood) series. So bad it inspired me to not continue reading the rest of the series.
IM also reading The Two Krishnas by Ghalib Shiraz Dhalla. Absolutely beautiful, only a third of the way through but I can safely say it's a 5 star novel. Poetic and intricate. I love it. Later this week I'll also begin The Host by Stephenie Meyer.

message 65: by Kate (new)

Kate Jenian | 4 comments I'm having another go at Dracula, having stopped it when it got too scary.

I also have Anna Karenina on the go. I'm trying to make the most of my uni break to really catch up on some reading. Fortunately, I'm studying to become a high school English teacher!!

I'm reading The Historian. It has a draggy beginning but once you get used to Elizabeth's prose, you will find yourself loving the story.

Karena (karenafagan) Kate wrote: "I'm reading The Historian. It has a draggy beginning but once you get used to Elizabeth's prose, you will find yourself loving the story."

I started it, but got really lost in the beginning. I may pick it up again.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

^The unceremonious shifting of POVs is quite confusing and I was also lost at some points. But after Part I, the story will be more interesting and continuous. :)

Ashley Vargas-Butler I'm reading Wuthering Heights which its a yearly treat for me during the winter.

message 73: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) Just finished the Great Gatsby and could someone explain what is so great with this book I must not be getting it because I didn't find it all that special in fact I could f gone my whole life without reading it.

We read Dorian for the book club a few months ago. Let us know what you think. :)

message 84: by Casseroll (new)

Casseroll Just finished The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby read by Anthony Heald. Good narrator. Book was ok. Descriptions were flowy/decadent but characters were frustrating. Kept to what is perceived as real-life and could be representing life today. Wanted to rush through the book. I may be too impatient for some classics. Gave 2 stars.

Allyson Hile | 1 comments Aliyah wrote: "I'm currently reading The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. Not a classic but a historical fiction nonetheless."

I finished this one not long ago. Not my favorites if hers. Have you read The Forgotten Garden?

message 86: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 5 comments I'm reading more than one book currently, which I try not to do because I finish much more slowly. I'm reading The Red Queen by Matt Ridley, A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, Swann's Way by Marcel Proust, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I think I'm going to focus on Game of Thrones because it's the longest and then I'll make my way through the other four.

I didn't care for Gatsby either, honestly. I also wanted to rush through it, just was not super impressed. I'll give it another go here in a while, it deserves at least that.

Its quite long & clunky, feels like I'm reading a Bible. I'm gonna slog though it :-/. Didn't read The Forgotten Garden yet.

Yep, I just don't get whats so great about Gatsby. I hated the characters, especially Tom & Daisy. Thought that Nick was the only level-headed guy, but was too underdeveloped for my liking. Did you see the preview/ trailer for the film version? The actors are SO WRONG. WHY HOLLYHOOD WHY?!

Eduardo Camargo | 10 comments Aliyah wrote: "Jessica wrote: "Kassandra wrote: "Just finished The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby read by Anthony Heald. Good narrator. Book was ok. Descriptions were flowy/decadent but characters..."

EXACTLY! I couldn't care less reading about the characters while reading The Great Gatsby, though I liked Fitzgerald's prose and the themes he touches. Still, it is a realistc portrait of a generation, and I respect that.

I read that one this year, and loved it! I can't believe I ever let anyone tell me it was boring.

Rebeca wrote: "Currently, I'm reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and..."

Classic. Love it. =)

I usually keep a few books of different types going at once, so right now, I'm reading Tocqueville's Democracy in America, Huxley's Crome Yellow, and The Works of Martin Luther. Nonfiction, fiction, and theology. Something for any mood. =)

I'm looking forward to starting Age of Innocence and Game of Thrones in January.
