Diana S Has this group ever done a Holiday Card Exchange?
I'm done it before with a couple of other book groups I been in. It was really fun! Is anyone interested?

Alisha Rivera | 145 comments Hmmm- sounds like a good idea, Diana! But maybe kind of late for it this year- I have a feeling people (me included) aren't logging into goodreads as often now b/c Readers Ink are on hiatus!

Cheryl and all: Happy New Year.

I believe it was Diana that compiled a list so far as to what Books and what months they will be read. Go to Book Picks 2013, and underneath that click on Ashley's link about pick a book and a month. It's a long link, but go to the bottom, and Diana has compiled a very classy list of what we have so far (nice look with the covers!!!). First book is mine called "Blind Descent" by Nevada Barr for January, you can look the others up from there. Enjoy!

PS - I just got a note from the library that your book has come in, so I'm taking a bunch back and picking it up today.

Alisha Rivera | 145 comments Happy New Year to everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.

I know there are some changes for some of us...I'm starting grad school on Monday. It'll be interesting to see how my time is spread out between work and school- so I've decided to give myself a break & not worry about reading in January, and hopefully I'll be in a good routine to pick back up with you in February.

Talk to you soon!

Lauren | 251 comments Happy New Year!

Wanted to pop in and see if anyone had strong opinions on my selection for April. I had heard both rave reviews and vitriolic rants about The World Before Her (which is part of why I selected it), but I've now heard from two people (one being Carol) in the past few weeks who didn't enjoy it. The other is a woman who works at a local bookstore. She and I have different tastes in books, but when she intensely dislikes a novel, I've found it's best to steer clear.

She didn't like The World Before Her. She even suggested several alternatives while telling me how much she didn't like this book. So in addition to the master list of potential book club picks I keep, I now have several suggestions from someone who is required to read novels for her job.

I've been going back and forth since the conversation at the bookstore, but I'd like to know what everyone else thinks. If people have bought the book and/or want to read it, I'm fine with keeping it. But given that I now have about 20 alternatives, I thought I should see if the group would rather try out one of those alternatives that is maybe not quite so divisive.

You're right. I really didn't like it very much. You can do what you want...And you're right some of us already have it. How neat to have a Book Store Buddy that can give you the inside track on good and upcoming books. That's kinda cool.

I currently have 5 of our books (1 on my Kindle) for Book Club. Thought it would be fun to get a start on some of them. Got a pretty good look at 3 of them so far.

Maybe you could post some of your choices and let us pick 3-4 from your list and then you pick the one where there is the most interest. Just an idea, or read some reviews and see what some of your choices say. Sorry to be a spoiler. I also keep a master list, and it's fun to draw from occasionally. Good luck!

Alisha, Congratulations!! What a surprise about you. Didn't know you were considering grad school. What an adventure. I was probably about your age when I went back for my Master's. Will miss you in January as I enjoy reading your input. Hey, is your Mom in our group? Haven't seen any indicators that she had joined or had input. Looking forward to getting to know her. Best wishes!!

Diana S Happy New Year Everyone!

First of all,
Congrats Alisha on Grad School! :D

Second,
I've heard good things about The World Before Her and looking forward to reading it.
Just remember, we're not going to agree with all the selections we pick. That's the uniqueness of a reading group. To find out our opinions or seeing the books we read in a different point of view.

Well, I fall into the category of "already bought it" with World Before Her, so I'm a tad partial to sticking with it. But whatever the group decides is fine by me.

I also agree with Diana, for any book that comes along. I mean, Blind Descent is totally NOT my kind of book, and yet . . . I'm enjoying reading something different. In the event a book isn't a home run, well, that's okay. Even better? Half of us loving a book and the other half hating it!

I'll keep my big trap shut, and Lauren, go ahead and go with your pick. I was just intrigued by our conversation the other day about your Book Store Buddy and her comments.

And Ashley, Blind Descent IS my kind of reading. I absolutely love it. I love a good murder mystery, and things of that genre. So I'm a happy camper this time, where I'm not always with selections made!!! Thinking of a quote from Star Trek, Spock says something like "Meeting the needs of the many rather than the needs of the one!" I've tried to meet the likes of the many and haven't done very well, so this time thought I'd try meeting the needs of the one and seeing what happens." Sorry if you're not happy. To date I haven't missed a book, so that's something!!

It is hard to please everyone isn't it Ladies!!! As I think back, I think the book(s) that most of liked more than disliked was the one "A Dog's Purpose" and "Half Broke Horses."

I need a lesson from Diana or Lauren or whoever. How do you make the print so that you can make it bold, or italicize it or underline, etc.? I don't know how. Any help welcome! Thanks!!

Hi Carol,
I just saw this message.
I hope this helps! :)

To italicize:
Put a lowercase i in between < >.
Then type what you want to be italicize.
To finish - you put /i in between < >.

To bold - use the letter b
To underline - use the letter u
To stike-out - use the letter s
