Lisa | 10 comments Hi everyone,

I am looking for a children's book or series of three books (I had a set of three illustrated books) that tells the story of some animals that break into a hunting lodge and make house. I believe there's a badger among the group.

When I have described what I remember of this book to others, everyone says it's certainly Grahame's The Wind in the Willows; yet I really don't think it is. I read part of Grahame's novel a week ago and despite similarities, it didn't ring a bell. The hunting lodge I remember is not Toad's house.

I read these three squarish, glossy-ish illustrated books in the late '70s.

Thanks for any help!
Lisa

Mads The closest thing I can think of is Redwall--but it's not a lodge, it's an abby. Brian Jacques made a large series out of it, and the badger was a very wise and important character. But it's not a hunting lodge. Sorry I can't be of more help...

Lisa | 10 comments Thanks. I don't think Redwall is it, but thank you for thinking of it.

Emily | 55 comments Did you read "Willows in Winter"? That is a sequel to wind in the willows, but its by a different author....I read it when I was little and that seems vaguely familiar (and no it wasn't toad's hall)....I can't think of any other books with a badger in it. What age range was this book for?

good luck!

Kate (katespofford) | 260 comments The Mistmantle Chronicles? It's more recent but I know there's a bunch of different animals in it.

An older series is The Rescuers by Margery Sharp (Disney did a couple of movies based on it) that was mostly mice but they may have helped other animals.

ABC (mary6543) | 13 comments The Brambly Hedge Series by Jill Barklem? They are British and in one the animals explore some rooms.

vicki_girl | 29 comments Is it Adventures in Fern Hollow? There is a story where some animals break into a house. There is also a story where a character's house gets destroyed by a hot air balloon (I think; I'll look it up when I get home) and has to be rebuilt. The one I linked is just one collection of these stories. The author John Patience has several other collections of these stories and some printed individually that you might want to check out.

Lisa, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Amanda (misterfive) | 202 comments Maybe Deep Wood by Elleston Trevor? Deep Wood mostly features Stripe the Badger. I think the animals fix up a mill or something towards the end of the book for one of the animals. It's very much the same gentle feeling that Wind in the Willows has.
