Did your books not have quotation marks, or was it just mine?

There aren't suppose to be quotation marks. After a while, you get used to it, but it is kind of annoying.
I think it doesn't have quotation marks for authenticity, since Saba doesn't have an education like we do, therefore she doesn't know about the use of quotation marks.

Agreed. Though even after reading most of the book I still wasn't used to it. On the bright side I found one set of quotation marks! :) I found it to be a small miracle.
Did anyone else get irritated, though, when they said it was better than the hunger games?
Yeah i got irritated when people said it was better than getting THG. Saba was in no way as caring and as brace as Katniss. And i called her a bitch as a joke... not really she wanted her littke sister ti die, that earns bitch status. You mad? Stay mad.

lol true that. Throughout the novels Katniss seems to change and learns through her trials. Saba doesn't really seem to do the same. She kind of just remains flat. I don't know if it will change throughout the series but if not there's no hope for her.
*shakes head* Plus, what's with all the drawl? I know they don't have much of an education but still...
People need to stop comparing dystopian novels to THG,I love THG but this is getting ridiculous. Saba wasn't suppose to be as caring and brace as Katniss... they're two different individuals

Through the book. We're only using HG as a reference.
yeah but people shouldn't be irritated just because someone liked this book better better then HG. They're entitled to their opinions. To me saba did change, atleast her attitude towards her little sister changed and she got to understand her parents better at the end of the book and got more comfortable with poeple being affectionate towards her. But i agree saba hasn't had that awesome character development that katniss had but the series is not over yet, we've seen katniss change and develope over three books the second book in the dustland series just came out.
The writing is like that because if you think of Saba she never learned to read or write, she was so secluded. It took awhile to get used to but by the end of the book I was glad it was written like that because it really helped potray Saba
I know that the writer probably made it like that because of Saba and her... education I guess, but there where times when Saba said something, and I thought she thought it, and than Jack would answer her, and I would always be like, "wait what! Is Jack a mind-reader or something, whats going on!" And after this little fit I realize that she actually said it out loud and I would feel stupid. For the fifth time. -_-

uuuugghghgjgfhghengf I know it was sah annoying. But, it kinda fit the mood of the book, so it didn't bother me that much.
Somehow I found it really easy to read, and I knew the character was speaking even without the quotation marks. I hated saba too, I thought she was a bitch but I came to like her in the end... idk.

It was confusing at first. I had to go back and re-read sentances several times just because I wasn't sure who was speaking. But I really loved the book.
The book seriously frustrated me, it was also nothing like the Hunger Games, I'm not a huge fan of THG but it still was better than this.
I was annoyed with it at first and nearly gave up on it but by page 100 I got used to it and surprisingly the story was still good. I don't deny it was annoying tho- quotation marks are there for a reason. <__<
When I started reading the book, I did notice how there weren't any quotations but it didn't really bother me. At 1st I kept saying that this was going to be tricky, but it didn't really bother me.
This book was definitely a different and good experience. The two problems i had with it were the quotation marks and grammar but by the 100th page i was used to it and enjoyed the book :)
I thought it was a mistake a first where I bought it Then When I looked At al the Copies they had I realized that they were all the same!!! It gets confusing at first but at the 150th page I got used to it :)

I agree Saba changed .Saba grew. Saba learned a great deal. She learned how to fight for what she believed in,to accept assistance when needed, and also to sacrifice herself for the ones she loved. In this way she shows us even the hardest nut can crack.
This is not an easy book to read considering its written so simply. When i first picked this book up i was like ...........seriously wtf. Saba sounded so ignorant and uneducated. My first thoughts were that it was a badly written book and in some ways it is.I almost gave up. However something clicked and i realized the reason she sounded so ignorant was because she was short of her potential, stunted, grown up in a land devoid of opportunity. Grown up in dust having to live on her wits and having lived a life diminished. I have a feeling most people in that timeline and place were uneducated so i do not feel she is on her own. Quite obviously society as we know it now collapsed generations before Saba's time and education has now taken the form of basic survival. I think the writing is frustrating at first but later becomes bearable as you begin not to notice the purposefully made grammatical and spelling mistakes.

Why in the fuck are there not quotation marks? It was confusing to know what this bitch was saying and what she was thinking.
