This is a long shot, but maybe The Moon of Gomrath (sequel to The Weirdstone of Brisingamen). Two kids on a quest, a wizard guarding sleeping knights, creatures called Bodachs, and I think there are some elves, too.
Could your book be YA, or do you think it was adult?
From wikipedia: "In regions of Wales and Scotland, a bodach is a term for an imp or a faery, often one of the shapeshifting, mischievous variety; this term, though derogatory in nature, was often used with affection, translating closest to "scoundrel" or "rascal". That, plus the character saying "och" makes me think your book is Scottish or Celtic fantasy, if that helps trigger anything for anyone.
