This fish likes to read (thisfish) Is it okay if I use my writing on my blog?

message 2: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments Sure, as long as it relates to the topic. It just isn’t okay to use the W.S.S. as a platform for blogging.

This fish likes to read (thisfish) Nah, I meant the stories or content that I write on here, could that be used on my blog?

message 4: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments And Sammy, on occasion the writing of other people has inspired some of us to want to blog it. Please ask first if you would like to blog other people's works. So far, no one's turned me down.

message 5: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Al, how could that possibly be a favourite quote?! Although it still holds true.

Nate | 166 comments Had no idea where else to post this...

The writing group I mod is currently dead (think little balls of rolled up paper tumbling across the floor of the deserted threads.) and has been for quite some time. (I don't even bother with the bi-weekly prompts anymore.) This is the second go 'round with a writing group, I find most of them die within a year or so. Anyway, If you'd like I can advertise this group to the few that are interesting in writing so in the event I delete my group others will have an option.

message 14: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments This group has been around for more than three years, but we always are happy to see new members. You can advertise if you want, though most groups I know of aren't fond of advertising ...

message 15: by Nate (new)

Nate | 166 comments Normally I'm one of those. However, I figure this way IF in the event I decide to kill it, I can at least suggest another well established writing group for the members to check out.

thanks
cheers

message 16: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments Nate, it isn’t my place to say, but rather than deleting the group, you might consider changing its status to that of a secret group, which would make it invisible and prevent people from joining. That way, you wouldn’t have to monitor it, whatever has been posted in it wouldn’t be lost, and you would have the option of reviving the group later if you felt like it.

message 17: by Nate (new)

Nate | 166 comments It's a good suggestion M, one I hadn't thought of. I'll take it under consideration.

But I really like destroying things! Build em up and tear em down. I think I should look into demolition as a career option. jk

message 18: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments If you aren't already, I imagine you'd be great at Minecraft - especially once you can construct TNT.

message 19: by Nate (new)

Nate | 166 comments Mindcraft? Is that a video game? I don't do video games, we don't get along... the controller through the hdtv and the draining of my bank acct to replace said TV was enough for me to find other forms of entertainment. Generally this comes at the expense of others jk

message 20: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments It's a computer game. It's a bit like virtual legos. Everything is in blocks that you tear down to mine resources (some material can be mined with your hands, others require tools). You can then use the resources to construct tools or simply to move that block from one place to another. You can build weapons, torches, carpet, houses, castles, glass - you can harvest food, collect animals, and excavate caverns.

The first night can be pretty tough, with monsters that can spawn anywhere in darkness (even during the day, so avoid deep caverns until you're suitably armed) so building a shelter filled with torches is usually a must from the start, but after that it's pretty much do whatever you want. Even reconstruct Minas Tirith just with lace it with TNT and watch it explode.

The graphics are intentionally bad.

message 21: by Zack (new)

Zack Sound like the giant cities of sandcastles I build on the beach just to let all my friends kids ravage them godzilla style.

message 22: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Hello, Nate. I'm not a player, either.

Sorry about your group. This one has been around for a long time. I see a 'last updated' dating back to 2009.

message 23: by M (last edited Aug 01, 2013 03:39AM) (new)

M | 11617 comments What draws me to groups is the online social interaction. Interacting with people in the real world runs my batteries down, but I find interacting with people online exhilarating. I’m an introvert and live mostly in an inner world, but I turn into an extrovert online!

I think part of what this group has to offer is a place for people to interact socially in a way that’s convenient, that feeds their need for interaction when they need it, but that doesn’t invade their space or turn them off the way real-life encounters sometimes do.

My impression is that the W.S.S. works as a writers’ group because it fills a niche, an occasional need for socializing but at a remove offered by communication through a keyboard.

message 24: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Yes. I agree and well articulated, M.

message 25: by Caitlan (new)

Caitlan (lionesserampant) | 2869 comments I like it, M.

message 26: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn (joc113) Very well said, M. Exactly.

message 27: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments I forgot to add that it really is a writers’ group, which isn’t an unimportant aspect of it. The weekly contests, the games, and most of the other threads are there to offer members ways to sharpen their writing. I think my writing has improved noticeably since I joined the group.

message 28: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments And I would like to think that, as well as expanding the paths of my verbosity, some of the verbiage has been more worthy of reading than ere I was here.

Sorry, couldn't resist playing with the language: WSS is also about play, the important aspect of the group. Well, maybe not the most important. Hmmmm. Maybe not third either. How does one rank importance in a creative group?

message 29: by M (new)

M | 11617 comments The most haunting writing has a playful aspect about it.

message 30: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Yes. Shakespeare's humour is at it's peak when it is in his serious plays. And his drama most potent in his comedies.

message 31: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Yes, yes and yes Belly.

message 32: by Edward (new)

Edward Medina (geek-for-books) | 92 comments M wrote: "The most haunting writing has a playful aspect about it."
If I am not wrong his Comedies were comedies in the Greek Theater sense (a type of Drama) instead of a Satire (a type of comedy).

I think this links explains it well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy) an excerpt from the page:

"...the essential agon of comedy as a struggle between a relatively powerless youth and the societal conventions that pose obstacles to his hopes. In this struggle, the youth is understood to be constrained by his lack of social authority, and is left with little choice but to take recourse in ruses which engender very dramatic irony which provokes laughter"

message 33: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Interesting observation. Generally true, but not exhaustive, of course. One of the other biggest sources of comedy is that of the incompetent authority figure - often male. Shakespeare's Falstaff and Chaucer's miller come to mind immediately. But I see that the Wiki article expands the examples of comedy well behind the relatively narrow one you cited.

message 34: by Rabindranath (new)

Rabindranath Can i write a story and send it to others (eg. for a contest)

message 35: by Esmie (new)

Esmie Is there a particular topic on which we are supposed to write on?

message 36: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Sorry Rabindranath and Esmie for tardy response.

Rabindranath, the WSS doesn't take any ownership of your writing, so you are free to submit/post anywhere else. However, some other places may frown on you submitting a story to them that you have posted it elsewhere, not just the WSS.

Esmie, for the contests the topic is posted for each week. But you are free to write whatever you want in your own space within the WSS and/or Goodreads.

Aria Ahmer (viramage) Its been forever since I've posted in this group, maybe even forgotten since I've changed so much and its been so long. xD I didn't know where to post this but I wanted to give a big thanks to all the mods in this group! Your contests and constructive criticism in the past really made me work hard at my writing and I'm proud to say I'm on a positive path for it. Thank you again! ^_^

message 38: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments You are more than welcome, Aria. I don't remember if I was a mod when you were active. I have also become very busy, and less active here. And I, like you, have found this place to have been, and continues to be, of great help in writing and in other ways, too.

I think you were, but its been a very long while. I actually got to finish my manuscript but right now its in the drafting stages still. But all the advice and words I got from mods and members in this group really helped me motivate myself to finish. :) You guys do an awesome job with the group. It seems to have grown quite a lot so I can only imagine how busy it is for a mod.

Great to see you grow as a writer and so very glad that we have helped.
