Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Ohh, good thread idea!

I agree with all of these:
Catching Fire
City of Bones movies - I loooove the Magnus actor)
Oz
Man of Steel - YUM
Hansel and Gretel - although I'm scared it's going to suck like the Brothers Grimm did, it has that look

Also:
EVIL DEAD!!!!
Warm Bodies
World War Z
Beautiful Creatures - despite hating the book

A remake of Oldboy with Josh Brolin? That sounds interesting.

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) I can't wait for Iron Man 3! Also Oz: The Great and Powerful and Les Mis!

Ditto on all three of these!
Carrie
The Great Gatsby
Maleficent

Chimney, I hope they do it justice. Hansel and Gretel is my favorite fairy tale bar none. I need to see Abe Lincoln: Vamp Hunter!

Yay for the Hobbit!!! Although I have to admit I'm scared. I hope it turns out well. =)

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) I think Terry Gilliam's new movie (The Zero Theorem) will be coming out in 2013, and that is the one I'm most excited for.

I love that man's movies.

It looks good so I added it. I'm a sucker for anything fairy tale related.
I haven't read mid-grade before--well, since I WAS mid-grade--but it looks worth a try.

I'm afraid not. I think they are making it into a movie, and I've heard that both Ian Somerhalder and Ryan Gosling, among other actors, were wanting the role. I don't think they've cast anyone yet.

Chimney wrote: "Three cheers for The Hobbit! I'm really excited that Martin Freeman is going to be in it, though I should probably read the book first."

The Hobbit was a fun book. I personally liked the Lord of the Rings better, but I have friends who claim the Hobbit as one of their favorite books. =) But as a hard core Tolkien fan, I have to see this movie. It would be sacrilegious of me not to go.

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I had enough hobbits to last a lifetime after the never-ending LotR movies.

message 14: by Anna (Bananas) (new)

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Eck, no more Chimney, no more!!! There should be a 3-hobbit-movie limit per decade.

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 133 comments True. I was ok when I heard, oh years ago I guess when there were still disputes about who had the rights and who would direct, etc. etc., that they were going to make two movies of it. That had been the plan at first, I believe. But now, a whole new trilogy of films based on one lonely book does seem to be a bit much.

@Anna, we are into a new decade you know.

But still, I agree with Chimney. FROOOOOOODDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh god, *wretch*.

Granted, I haven't read them (okay, I read a bit of a friend's copy to see what the hell everybody was going on about and promptly put it down), but come on! I saw a very interesting article that ran 50 Shades of Grey and E.L. James' original Twilight fan fic through comparative software, and it ended up the two were 89% the same. This was after it was published, and after the publisher swore up and down that the two were completely different.

I'm no lover of Twilight or Stephanie Meyer, but she should sue the pants off of James. Say what you will about the quality of either work (and I have a lot to say, believe me), infringing on the copyright of a writer's work just isn't right.

message 17: by Bob (new)

Bob Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters
Die Hard 5
Oz the great and powerful
Jack the Giant Killer
Iron Man 3
Star Trek II
After Earth
Superman: Man of Steel
World War Z
Wolverine 2
Robocop
Paranormal Activity 5
Thor 2
Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Hobbit
Dark Skies

Robopocalypse
and who knows what else may catch my attention. :)

Bob, yes on World War Z! I'm glad someone else is excited because I thought it looked great. I didn't know Robopocalypse was being made into a movie. Have you read the book?

I have to defend 50 Shades. I enjoyed the books and am looking forward to the movie. 50 did start out as Twilight fanfic, but trust me the plot and characters are very different.

2) You can't believe everything you read on

Yes there is going to be a Robopocalypse film but it will be released in 2014 not 2013 as I had read on another website. Sorry. No I haven't read the book yet because........this is hard to admit.....I didn't know about it.......oh the shame. :) Now that I know about it though It sounds really interesting so I think I'll have to. Kelly (xitomatl) Anna (Bananas!) wrote: "I have to defend 50 Shades. I enjoyed the books and am looking forward to the movie. 50 did start out as Twilight fanfic, but trust me the plot and characters are very different. "

I'm sure it's very different from Twilight itself, but it's not much different at all from her Twilight fan fic, which is derivative of Twilight, which means copyright infringement - that's my biggest problem with it all. There's even documented history of it being posted originally as said fan fic, so it's not even really up for debate.

One of the unwritten rules of fan fic - to my understanding - is that it's derivative, yes, but nobody makes money off it and that's why all those authors and publishers look the other way. If people start making money off of it, authors/publishers are going to start clamping down on those copyrights, and then a whole world of fandom goes down in flames. I'm not into fan fic myself, but a lot of people really love it, and use it to showcase their love for whatever they're writing about. It'd be awful if a community like that died out because of something like this.

It's a worse-case-scenario kind of thing, granted, it just makes me worry!

message 35: by Natalie (new)

Natalie I'm headed to see The Hobbit on Friday. I'm going to the 3D high frame rate because I am interested to see how it will look. I still don't understand splitting it into 3 movies but apparently Peter Jackson drew from a lot of the Lord of the Rings appendix to flesh it out.

I'm also rereading my copy of the book which I read in my first english class back in 6th grade. It's definitely like catching up with an old friend. One thing I loved is on the first two pages Tolkien goes into a whole description of hobbits that is just so informative but charming. I sat there thinking that this is what I mean when I'm disappointed with a book's world building. So many books nowadays either just ignore it or infodump.

Anyway, movies I'm interested in for next year:
-Warm Bodies
-Oz
-42 (I'm a big Dodgers fan)
-Iron Man 3
-Star Trek into Darkness (love that title)
-Epic
-Now You See Me
-Elysium
-Ender's Game (cautiously optimistic...though I'm actually more interested if they make more movies will they go to speaker for the dead or shadow of the hegemon)
-Thor: The Dark World
-Catching Fire (Finnick!!!!)
-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (still curious how it's 3 movies, esp. if Smaug shows up in the second)

I will pray to the Hobbit gods for you that they forgive you of your Hobbit hating sins. :) I bet you there are more women in this group that like the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit than there are that don't. How much do you want to bet you Hobbit Hater? Or maybe your too afraid to bet. I think LOTR would have benefited from not having Samwise, can't stand him. Doesn't help that I just spent a week watching all of Game of Thrones and there is a human Samwise who is cowardly and annoying and even he is more endearing than Samwise Gamgee. I'm looking forward to the Hobbit though because Martin Freeman is amazing and I'm so glad to be watching something with Ian McKellan in again.

I see I've started a war. Perhaps I should have hidden my hobbit-hate but no, it could not be contained.

Hobbits are furry and boring. Comic books are amazing and full of beautiful art. Horror films are deliciously bloody. Sci-fi is life altering. Pizza is the food of the gods. See the difference? One of these things is not like the others.

Follow their lead and come to the Hobbit side of the Force. You know you want to. By the way Hobbits make great pizza and they would like to try one of their pizzas. I hope you find your way to the Hobbit Lovers way of thinking. I'll be praying to the hobbit gods for you. *wipes eyes again* sniff. :)
