Lala | 335 comments Week 2 - Bone

Empire of the Summer Moon Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne

4 Stars 16.12.12

Bone - page 7 - In Kansas alone the bones of thirty-one million buffalo were sold...
Lightning - page 50 - The ecology of the plains was, moreover, one of fire - constant lightning - or Indian - induced conflag rations...
Belt - page 229 - The next morning Goodnight found a pillow slip with a little girl's belt...
Sky - page 145 - ...a balance of earth and and wind and sun and sky...

What can i say about this book is that history has sometimes ugly face. It was quite disturbing to read it and i felt bad for all parties. It's hard to see how some people think it's okay to take others freedom and push them out of there lands and take there main food source and thats whole nother thing. What americans did to buffaloes was just unhuman. That was one of the parts i just wanted to cry and not read more of it.

Turtlecollector Dennis I finished the backup book today, but I am going to wait and see if I can finish the book I originally picked this week. I am about 1/5 of the way through it and it seems like I should be able to as long as I don't distract myself too much with other books (like I did with the backup book). I think I will make sure I read so many pages of it before I can read any other book.

Katherine (katdylan) Week 2 - Bone
Book: The River Within
Author: Baxter Clare Trautman
Rating:
Read: 12/14/2012

Quick review:
This is not the first lesbian book I read, but is by far the best. We don't get to feel there's anything lesbian related until 20% left of it. This book revolves around the lives of three women. They are all connected trough family and friendship. Besides that, they have one thing in common: The war. The war took and gave things to all of them. All three women have secrets, so dark they can't see that maybe there's a light on for them somewhere. I couldn't help to relate to them, because their issues are our issues. Should I marry this guy? Should I take this job? Why this pain won't stop?
This is my first book by this author, and I think this book is just amazing. It's not about sex, or even love. It's about loss, and how we deal with them.

Items:

Bone - "Well, I am. Believe me. My aching bones remind me everyday." (KL #3322)

Belt - Finding the belt around Kate's waist, she tied it, explaining. (KL #3542)

Lightning - The fire danced in them, as innocent and wondrous as lightning bugs on a summer night. (KL #3091)

Paper - They were as blank as a clean sheet of paper. (KL #2877)

Turtlecollector Dennis Sorry, Dyllan, changed my book to my backup book since I won't get the other one finished by tomorrow.

Week 3: Sunshine

The People of Sparks (Book of Ember, #2) by Jeanne DuPrau by Jeanne DuPrau
Read 12/16/12 - 3 stars

This is a nice book for children or teens. As the second book in the series, it continues nicely from where the first one left off and has more adventures and struggles to follow. I will be interested to find out how long it will take for the two groups of people to live together successfully.

I really wish I had read this sooner. I loved Abby in the first book, but I forgot how much. And I also forgot that I enjoyed Talivar, even though Abby was with Brystion in book one. I am hoping to get the next book, which is already out, from the library quickly so I can get another Taliver fix. And I suppose an Abby and Phinneas the Unicorn fix too.

Sunshine: "There were times when I wouldn't mind a little dream sunshine..." Page 109

Paris (pah13) Week 4 - Boots

Red Hot Holiday by Anne Calhoun by Ann Calhoun, K.A. Mitchell and Leah Braemel
Finished: 12/23/2012
Rating: ★★★

The three stories in this anthology reminded me of the warm fuzzy Hallmark Christmas movies that are currently on tv...except with these the Hallmark channel would have to be a pay channel and these "movies" would only be allowed on after a certain time. Like Hallmark movies, they ended a little abruptly, but they were definitely hot and sweet while they lasted.

Breath on Embers by Ann Calhoun was my favorite and I would love to see more featuring Ronan and Thea in the future. I'd also like to see Tim get his own little story.

Boots: "So were his boots." Location: 2203
Body Part: Shoulder: "...he caught Jonah twisting in front of the mirror, glancing over his shoulder to get a look at his upper arm." Location: 337
Weather: Snow Jonah turned to look at the frost covering the edges of the windows, grass barely dusted with snow." Location: 301
Misc: Shelf "When he looked back, Meg was fingering the metal sculpture of a dragon nestled among a shelf filled with various local artist's work." Location: 2014

Watermelon (Walsh Family, #1) by Marian Keyes

***** 25.12.12

Items:
Boots -
page 16 - My heart sank to my boots.
Snow - page 200 - ...few flurries of snow...
Eyes - page 5 - ...blue eyes...
Fruit - page 97 - ...a citrus fruit...

It was a story about woman who found herself really bad situation out of blue. The book tells her story and how she manages her new situation. It was written with humor and i loved every page.

Turtlecollector Dennis Week 4: Boots

The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, #3) by Rick Riordan by Rick Riordan
read 12/27/12 - 4 stars

I really love this series that has the Greek vs Roman gods/goddesses battling each other through their children. The adventures are fun to follow and the books describe the different sides of the same gods/goddesses even though they are the same person. I like to root for the underdog and they always seem to come out ahead in these books. I can't wait for the next one to come out next year.

Items claimed:

1. clothing: boots pg 8
"...tall leather boots..."

2. weather: mist/fog pg 64

"...turned the surface of the lake to salty mist."

3. body part: elbow pg 272
"...held out his elbow like a..."

4. misc: cake pg 472
"...a birthday cake with purple icing..."

Turtlecollector Dennis Well, I made it through four weeks before an item I already claimed was called. What is going to happen with E? She hasn't posted here in awhile and her last one was cut off.

Week 5 - Bike

The Prophet of Yonwood (Book of Ember, #3) by Jeanne DuPrau by Jeanne DuPrau
Read 12/30/12 - 2 stars

The book was OK. I was confused as to why this was the third book in the series. It did not seem to connect to the others until the very last chapter. If I forgot about the first two books, reading was fine but the book needed more hints throughout it about where it fit with the other books. Leaving it to the last chapter for connections brought the rating down. Also, it goes back in time and does not continue from where the second book finished. I was expecting to find out what happened to the original characters.

Items claimed:

1. Misc: bike pg 248
"...dumbbells and stationary bicycles."

2. Weather: rain pg 6
"Drops of rain began to..."

3. Clothing: glasses pg 31
"...didn't have his glasses on..."

4. Body parts: curly hair pg 105
"He had curly blond hair..."

Killing Rites (The Black Sun's Daughter, #4) by M.L.N. Hanover by M.L.N. Hanover
Finished: 1/4/2013
Rating: ★★★

This is book four in the Black Sun's Daughter series and we finally find out why the series is called that. It was definitely an interesting revelation, one of many in this book. I'm still not sure how I feel about this series and about Jayne as a protagonist. I was hoping for a little more this time around between her and Ex, but instead they spent a bunch of the action apart and now I wonder if I'll ever get what I had been hoping for during the last few books.

I'll pick up the next book when it comes out because I want to get some answers to the Black Sun part. Hopefully Jayne will be slightly less annoying in the next one.

Weather: Fog "Something like a black fog swirled behind and around them, particles of raw darkness pressing against the light." Page 257

Turtlecollector Dennis I am reading My Kind of Christmas (Virgin River, #20) by Robyn Carr for eyes and already 3/4 of the way through it.

I had to deviate from my method of picking items to claim. I had no idea how hard it would be to find moonlight. I found lots of references to the moon in my books, but none that also implied moonlight or a shining moon so I chose snow instead. I'll wait and see what comes up for next week, I guess. So far only one of my items has overlapped anyway, so I am doing well at finding all the items.
