Makes your laptop look like it was lit by a tungsten or candle after sundown (reduced color temperature). It's supposed to help you get more sleep at night, and I really think it works. Definitely looks steampunk. It's free and works great on my macbook pro. It sure affects me, maybe because I use my laptop so much.

Mark Catalfano (cattfish) Cant you get the same effect by switching to dark background and light text?

Tamahome | 7232 comments I think it's different. This is from the FAQ:

Plenty of things already change the brightness of my screen. Why is this different?
f.lux changes the color temperature of your display. Natural light is more blue, while most artificial light (including candlelight) is warmer. Incandescent bulbs, which we're all used to, become more red in tone when you dim them. But newer LEDs and CFLs don't - this includes the backlight on your monitor. If you're a photographer, you've probably dealt with this, since pictures taken inside at night are always much more brown than photos outside.

Josh (firequake) | 30 comments I'm a bit obsessive about accurately representing color. I calibrate my display with a Spyder regularly. I would never use a program that intentionally misrepresents the color temperature of the monitor.

That said, I'm crazy. But I'd still avoid f.lux.

Tamahome | 7232 comments The point is to at least use halogen at night. I dim the lights in the living room too, and the room gets an orange-y glow. I also put movie mode on my tv, which changes the 'color tone' to 'warm2'. I also ordered some orange safety glasses. Am I going overboard?
