Bookish__fangirl It depends on the 13 year old
But some people might be influenced by this book in a negative way

Jerri I would say no. And if you choose to then be sure to be available to discuss the book with your teen. I recently finished the book and I have a teen at home myself who has undergone some extreme bullying. His bullying came from the internet. Those bullies are often nameless (they use made up identities) and it adds another level of intensity to not actually know who your tormentors are. Even the local and state police were unable to verify who was harassing him. As a work of fiction, I enjoyed the book. As a portrayal of current society, I hated the reality. What happened in the book was bad. It should never happen to anyone, let alone a child, but I have seen worse unfortunately. Had the teens communicated then it could have all ended differently. So for me that was the most important message. Know what your kids are going through. Be there for them because what might not seem like a big deal to us might be catastrophic for them. That isn't always easy but with the peer pressure of today's youth it is necessary. I have read the critics say it glamorizes suicide. I am not sure I buy that but I do think it shows things and emotions can escalate and a person can be left feeling alone without options. This is not an uplifting novel but there are good messages in the book. The parent needs to be involved in the reading to make sure the teen realizes that suicide cannot be an acceptable answer.

ephyjeva ahh i don't think so. it is rather disturbing. but it also depends on one's maturity. if one's uncomfortable when it comes to topics that include severe depression, anxiety (?), self-hatred, suicide AND explicit sex content, it is not a suitable book for them.
