Would you jump in someone's family matters even if you didn't know them as Enfield did?

I would jump into family matters if it was harming someone, but otherwise it really is none of my business and I would stay out of it.

What a good question...it's been thirty years since I read this. I can't remember much of it.
Do you suppose that was a plot trick for the author, just to keep the story going? Maybe he needed an outside observer for events to unroll.
I doubt I could jump into someone else's family issues, not blind, no way.
