Gwendolyn (drgwen) Stops in to check on the roses

Hey UM;

You've been very quiet recently.
All okay in your part of the world?

message 602: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish (last edited May 17, 2009 12:22PM) (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Hi Gwen,

Just trying to maintain my sanity...or what is left of it.

How are you?

message 603: by Gwendolyn (new)

Gwendolyn (drgwen) Busy doing much the same.

I'm up to my hips in scripts, manuscripts and a large consulting project.

The permanent repair to the stable and barn roof's, after the passing of the storm fronts, is under way.

... and we need to finish editing footage for Dee and Paul... so I'm off to the big city and the studio tomorrow to see what my partner has come up with.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Good luck with all your projects. I'm sure they will turn out wonderful.

Be careful in the big city.

Wendy (wendyswore) SOme lessons from Maria Shriver:

Pinpoint Your Passion (and follow it)

Be Willing To Fail (you can't succeed if you never try)

Superwoman is Dead... and Superman May Be Taking Viagra. (you can't be everything to everyone- choose those that are most important and let the rest go)

Marriage Is A Hell of a Lot of Work!

Laughter: Love and Laughter are what you need most in your life. They'll fill out all the potholes in the road.

Don't forget to smell your roses today UM, take an extra whiff for us. hugs!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Thanks, Wendy! I am focusing on writing and reading so I don't have to "think" family.

5 new pages today, new scene. Resolution.

Have a good night.

Oh, and thank you for the emails. Your kindness and wisdom have been very comforting.

message 607: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Way to go on your 5 new pages! THat's a good chunk of writing :) (can't wait to read it)

Five pages is outstanding work UM.

I am very proud of you :]

Paige Miller | 4362 comments :) Nice job, U_M.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Ok, my daughter, Megan, got a nice picture of our Weeping China Doll Tree and a flower. If you look closely at the tree, you can see the flowers drape down the trunk on "tendrils". They are very delicate, not like branches or rose canes at all. It is simiar to a Weeping Willow in the way it grows.

Photobucket

The flower for the tree is similar to the China Doll bush, but lighter in color and more delicate looking.

Hey UM,

HELP! My new rose bush is dying. Pout! I am a murderer. I can't figure it out. I love roses, but I just can't keep them alive.

*looks down at my two brown thumbs, and then over to Edward who is giggling*

Not funny Edward!

I am just going to close my eyes and pretend that I am standing in the middle of your garden UM :]

Love the pictures!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish What are you doing to the rose?

Is it planted in the shade?

They have to get more sun than less. You could dig it up and ship it to me :)

I am going to do a little research into roses in your area and see what I can come up with, but I need some information.

1. Sun exposure? How many hours of sun per day?

2. Watering habits? How often do you water, for how long, etc.

3. Fertilizing? What do you use?

4. Soil? Is it hard packed like clay?

I might take a run down to the rose farm today and see what's what.

I have a book by Miracle Gro that is specifically for roses. I will look up what it says about Sterling Silver and let you know.

It is in full sun. Plus we actually have had sun for the past week. The skies are usually grey, but they have been bright blue recently. It has been a little chilly (in the 40s at night, and between 50 and high 60s during the day)

I have only been watering it when it feels dry. As in, I stick my finger in the soil and if it is moist I do not water. I fear that I might not be watering it enough?

I have been using a rose fertilizer on it. Started it off with a stem-combo of anti-bug and fertilizer.

Soil is not hard packed, and has good drainage.

Currently the leaves are looking dead, and no flowers are budding. But...the soil is moist. I am baffled.

Thanks so much for your help :]

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I'll see what I can find out and let you know. No rose will die on my watch.

LOL

Yippie...Geez, I hope I am not the first of the "Rose Death Eaters"

I have nOOooo idea what that means...been reading too much Harry Potter ;]

message 617: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish (last edited May 25, 2009 03:57PM) (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I would email this person and ask her about your rose.

ask-ann@weeksroses.com

Be very specific about how often you water...daily, weekly, how much water, etc.

Then, check out this rose:

http://www.weeksroses.com/rose_stainl...

It sounds like Sterling is hard to grow, but this is a newer improved version, much heartier, showier with long lasting flowers and longer bloom time.

I found ZERO about it on the web other than people having problems asking for help.

Later today I will try to get out to the yard and see if I still have the care tag on my Sterling Silver. If I do, I'll post the instructions. Oh, wait. You have the rose, does it have the tag with directions?

The tag with instructions is long gone, sorry

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish My oldest daughter (not the rose photographer) took this picture of her son, my grandson, playing in the water at a birthday party this morning.

Photobucket

She didn't alter the picture at all. She has a friend who is a professional photographer who told her how to set her camera for pictures like this.

Wendy (wendyswore) What a cutie Moi! Sprinklers are a basic part of childhood education. :)

message 621: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) That is an adorable picture. He's so cute. I love how the water looks like it's in motion. Very Very nice. Sprinklers were a blast as a kid.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Heh heh heh.

Sprinklers are a blast as an adult.

message 623: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) HAAA YEAH THEY ARE! Your emoticons are adorable. do you post them the same way as any pic? And where do you find them?

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I have collected them here and there. You can right click on most any picture and save it to your computer.
Then, I upload said picture to photobucket.com, then using the code they provide I post it here.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for the info UM. I will be sure and drop the Ask Roses Lady a note later today :]

As to the care tag. I think it went the way of the garbage when hubby planted the rose for me on Mother's Day. I kind of remember him saying something like..."Why do you need that?"

Please tell your daughter that she should enter her picture in a summer photo contest. I know it would win! He is such a cutie! Bet he looks just like his Gramma :]

message 627: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Er- we were supposed to keep the rose taggy-thingy?
oops!

I used to toss my tags all the time, not any more.

And thanks, I am going to suggest that she enter that photo. It's so...American as apple pie somehow.

Got another 3 pages down today...out of order *grumbles* Why is it that when I want to write in order, it just doesn't flow that way? Today was spent writing someones wedding night and they haven't even gotten married yet! *more grumbling*

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Wendy wrote: "Er- we were supposed to keep the rose taggy-thingy?

That's a big YES! It helps anyway. :)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish For the Young Prose Society:

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. Here are some winners…..

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.

2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like
underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a
guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of
those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country
speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse
without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was
room-temperature Canadian beef.

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes
just before it throws up.

6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated
because of his wife’s infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge
at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.

9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a
bowling ball wouldn’t.

10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag
filled with vegetable soup.

11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie,
surreal quality, like when you’re on vacation in another city and
Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p. m. instead of 7:30.

12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

13. The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you
fry them in hot grease.

14. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across
the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having
left Cleveland at 6:36 p. m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka
at 4:19 p. m. at a speed of 35 mph.

15. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences
that resembled Nancy Kerrigan’s teeth.

16. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had
also never met.

17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the
East River.

18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only
one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.

19. Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.

20. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil,
this plan just might work.

21. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not
eating for a while.

22. He was as lame as a duck Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but
a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine
or something.

23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and extended one slender leg
behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

24. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with
power tools.

25. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as
if she were a garbage truck backing up.

Wendy (wendyswore) Oy Moi, I can hardly type! THat is sooo funny. I've gotta share that one with buddys. Oy -wipes a tear.

I can't decide if they are from exceptionally talented students who purposely are putting it out there to be funny, or if they are from kids who accidentally stumbled upon genius. Wow- what fun.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I was laughing so hard myself. I think I'll stick them over on Pages.

Wendy (wendyswore) Yes- do that!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Done! Night night!

OMGosh, I was laughing so hard that tears are rolling down my face. That was just too much fun! Thanks so much UM :]

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Where did you find the link, Dee?

By the way...a friend told me I was wrong, they are similies, not metaphors.

Same friend who told me how "more pale" was incorrect and I should be using the word "paler"

message 638: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) I think your friend has something stuck up her... well anyway, They don't all fit in any one category. Metaphores works as well as anything to describe the lot of them.

(and paler is a lame word)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Here was her detailed explanation:

"They are not metaphors. Similies liken one thing to another thing. "She had a round face, like a frying pan"

A metaphor is a figure of speech which is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblence. An example would be "A mighty fortress is our God". God is not literally a fortress but the colorful resemblence is being applied to Him.

An argument could be made that they are analogies but not in the strictest sense. An analogy makes a comparison between things or groups of things.

"Summer is to heat as winter is to cold" is an analogy. Because this sort of likens them, in a manner, analogies and similies overlap."

message 640: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Good crap, you'd need a scope to get it out from that far up her... well anyway.

I suppose her advice is intended to be helpful, (we're going to assume she doesn't mean to post self-glorificating drivel) but OBVIOUSLY you posted the list to make people laugh. WHO CARES if it is a correct term or not. A normal person would have been concentrating on not peeing their pants rather than on the defenition.

Pity her/him, Moi, they were apparently born without a sense of humor. Life must suck that way.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish That's exactly it. I saw that list and laughed, and thought others might enjoy it as well. That's it, end of story.

I've never claimed to be the brightest tool in the shed or the sharpest bulb in the box for that matter...it was just meant to be fun.

I'm glad someone enjoyed it.

message 642: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) OUr buddies over in "on fiction writing" are having a good gigglesnort over it too.

Renee said she liked the balerina lifting her leg on the hydrant one, and I- I can't decide- they are all too funny

REnee just got her own cubi here by the way- did you see?

message 643: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyswore) Carlos said #21 was classic

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Good, I'm glad they are enjoying it!

No, I didn't realize there was a new tenant. I haven't been around enough lately to notice much of anything.

OK, I'm off for awhile. Have a great day.
