Ya, I did ask several people before I dug out the old other ones- but only a couple wanted one or two. Farmers just haven't the time for roses I suppose.

I do love roses, but they're hard to grow here. Save for the hay and alfalfa crop, which are for the most part taken care of by hired help, I have a few house plants and potted cacti. Sad to admit but I'm not very good with plants. I know... I know... English women are supposed to be brilliant and inveterate gardeners, but for some reason I simply did not inherit the genes.
Oh, I know how to lay out the summer and winter gardens and what should be grown in them, but at home we've always had the gardeners and groundskeepers to do all that and...
Gah!
The worst part is that I do so love flowers. My house in the Piedmont Hills... up the ridge, east of Oakland, California is surrounded by roses and citrus trees, but there I have a real Japanese gardener and groundskeeper (his is a family business) who looks after things for me.
I've tried to find someone like him here, but the cost would be prohibitive.

Your Piedmont Hills house sounds lovely!
Down the hill I had a small yard, but I had it all set up like a beautiful English courtyard garden. Everyone who came over loved it!
Oh, UM, your roses are so beautiful that I can actually smell them.
I LOVE roses. Can hardly wait until Mid-May (no more snow) and purchase new plants. They never live over the winter, no matter what I do :[
Keep the pictures coming. I am sOOooo impressed :]

As long as Meg keeps taking pictures, I will keep them coming. So far only the Rio Samba (the 3 above pics) has bloomed enough to photograph, with the exception of my Angel Face...those should come tomorrow.
Good Morning!Today's Rose installment is Betty Boop.
The colors are very vibrant and the actual flowers don't look real, they look more computer generated because of the unusal and bold colors. This photo really doesn't do it justice, but it is gorgeous!
Good evening UM! Just dropping by to say Hi! I hope all is well, and I wish you a most magical week!
:D

Thank you, Julie! It's good to see you again :)
Have a wonderfilled week, yourself :)
Today's rose... Angel Face. I love the ruffled looking petals. This rose has such an amazing fragrance. Not your typical rosey scent but sweeter, almost fruity.
Hey UM, do you have any Sterling Silver roses? Those are my all time favs. The Angel Face looks a lot like a Sterling Silver :)
Dee wrote: "Hey UM, do you have any Sterling Silver roses? Those are my all time favs. The Angel Face looks a lot like a Sterling Silver :)"We do have a Sterling Silver. They are stunning, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Soon as it does, I will post it here.
Today's rose is the Olympiad, named for the 1984 Summer Olympics where they were planted along the streets of Los Angeles.

Maybe I'll celebrate by doing something different... maybe... planting a rose bush?
Dee wrote: "Hey UM, do you have any Sterling Silver roses? Those are my all time favs. The Angel Face looks a lot like a Sterling Silver :)"This is a picture of the Angel Face bush yesterday. It doesn't get as tall or dense as the Sterling Silver.
Thank you, Dee! Today's the big day. I'm turning 26 again.... *sigh* maybe next year I'll go to 27.Have a wonderful day :)
Happy Birthday Moi!! Another five years and you'll be as old as me!! Sweet! I hope you do something fun for your birhday. Since Mine is in the summer I usually get to do something really different and exciting, like weed and work. Mostly I try to forget when it is so I don't feel a let down when it sucks. My mom never fails to bring me a flower or something though. (She is the kind of mom I hope I am learning to be)Anyway- Hope your day is wonderful!!

I've been 26 for 23 years...I'm good at it now!
Just from what I've seen of your posts, I'm sure you're a great mom already! Sounds like your mom did good :)
Today we have Berries and Cream, a climbing rose. I don't know much about it, but I picked it up because it stays fairly small for a climber but the scent is over the top sweet!
And as a point of reference, it's climbing on the small white trellis in the upper portion of the picture.
That photo of my front planter was taken last year. This year the roses are all bigger.
Happy Birthday. Personally, I've been 19 or 20 for about three and a half decades (inside, anyway). It's only the decaying outer shell that is showing signs of age.
Uniquely Moi wrote: "Thank you, Dee! Today's the big day. I'm turning 26 again.... *sigh* maybe next year I'll go to 27."Giggle Snort
That's what I say every birthday.
"I'm 29" and my friends all chortle and mutter 'again'. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it."
Paul wrote: "Happy Birthday. Personally, I've been 19 or 20 for about three and a half decades (inside, anyway). It's only the decaying outer shell that is showing signs of age."Yes, but on men it looks distinguished (or is that extinguished? I can never remember...)
For us, we either look 'elegant for someone our age', or we're treated as a crone, simply ignored, or looked upon as a 'crazy old lady' and then ignored.

Some friends dropped by yesterday and asked me why I don't just claim 25, and I told them that I could never pass for 25. (As though I could pass for 26) LOL

Yes! See, I love what I call "well matured" men. Even in High School I had a gorgeous History teacher with a wonderful Scottish accent... I actually told him that he was "well preserved for a man of his age." LOL He laughed and laughed... and I was serious. *blushing*

Isn't it amazing how our perception of age changes as we get older?

Moi wrote: "Even in High School..." If my kids were here, they'd say: "Was this right after you rode your pet triceratops to school?"and I'd say, "Yes after the dinosaur but before they invented the wheel."
Snide little buggers.
LOL Another one is: Was that before or after the ice melted?
And my son asked me "Mom, were you born before or after TV was invented?" I had to ask, "Color or black and white?"
Kids...they will 'get theirs' someday. ;)
Today we get Lady Banks Climbing rose. These blossoms are only about 1 inch across and they grow in clusters of 5-9 blossoms. This bush is very cool in that the "canes" or "branches" aren't thick at all, they are more like the weeping part of a Weeping Willow and they grow 30-50 feet long. This one is on my back porch and when in full bloom will literally be covered in these yellow clusters, you will barely be able to see any green. Well, I'm hoping so anyway This is the first time I've grown on in the shade.
Hi! Those flowers are pretty! I'm sure your yard will be sooo pretty!
Annie Mae ~Cali~ wrote: "Hi! Those flowers are pretty! I'm sure your yard will be sooo pretty!"Thank you, Cali! *hugs* Have a beautiful weekend.
Today's rose is called China Doll. When fully in bloom it looks like a giant ball of pink flowers, no green shows at all! These flowers are also only about 1" across. The bush stays low and rounded. I'd say no more than 1-2 ft. tall.
HI UM, just stopped by to smell the roses. THey smell great!! Have a lovely day and take an extra wiff for me!
Today's rose is called George Burns. The bush is beautiful when in bloom, but let me tell you, the thorns on this baby are vicious! They are very long, very nasty and they cover the canes...no deer food from this bush.
The flowers are varigated yellow, pale yellow, cream and shades of pinks and reds. It's quite showy.
Hey UM;Thanks for the stroll through your flower garden. They're beautiful.
... and after dealing with the beasts yesterday, it's just exactly what the doctor ordered for today; peace and quiet and beauty.
Glad you're enjoying the garden, Gwen. It is very peaceful and very lovely. It's hard to get much color in the High Desert, but I found mine in roses :)My daughter is out taking more pictures. Things are blooming quickly now, so keeping up is a little more difficult. I asked her to get a good shot of the George Burns thorns... wait til you see them. They are more like daggers than thorns!
