Many of you have seen or heard about the Cleveland woman who drove up on the sidewalk to bypass a school bus. She was sentenced to hold a sign that says, "Only and idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a bus." She is to hold this sign where she was caught, for one hour, yesterday, today, and now tomorrow after her antics of yesterday.
Shena Hardin, who is 32-year-old, and should beyond know better, was caught driving on the sidewalk in front of a daycare center, and stopped by police after several complaints that this had happened before her getting caught. Witnesses claim that she has been doing this for the better part of a year, laughing every time. Claims that she laughed at her court appearances also are being repeated about Hardin.
Many in the neighborhood feel that suspending her license and charging her a fine of $250 is more than enough and that this sign holding is too much, others feel that it is not enough. They may be correct in that sentiment. Yesterday, Hardin was seen for her hour, smoking, texting, listening to music and just about everything else but holding up her sign as ordered unless she was shielding her cigarette. Every television station in town has her on tape.
As one columnist put it this morning,"she was dressed more for the mall". She will be observed by the judge today. The columnist this morning, one I don't normally read, made a good point about trying to embarrass someone who refuses to be embarrassed. He lamented that in our current society it is harder to shame or embarrass someone. He's correct. Our current society allows so much lee way for bad behavior with out consequence that when somebody needs to learn a lesson like this, it's lost on them because they cop an "f-you" attitude and symbolically flip off the punishment.
We have lost common sense, common courtesy, and self responsibility in this country. You want to know why our kids cant' compete with other countries? This is why. Kids have no sense of boundaries, consequences,or self checking of morals because we are raising our children to not have to answer for what they have done. You can't punish a child in school without a parent threatening or trying to sue the school for being unfair, parents who are trying too hard to be their child's friend, and too much worry about psychological damage to punish a their children when they do get out of hand, that we get people like Hardin who grow up to be adults who know no shame.
I agree with you. Some of that behavior can be seen in Canada too. We constantly have a talk here in BC how teachers have a hard time with bullies, they are not allowed to do anything. Too many kids committed suicide because of this and hopefully things are going to start to change. Thank you for your posts, I love to read them.

And that is a shame.
