question about Thomas Covenant

Was just wondering how connected the 3 trilogies of Thomas Covenant are. I picked up book one of the second trilogy and I'm wondering if I'll feel lost when I eventually read it without reading the first trilogy.

You'll wish you'd read the first trilogy. There is a brief summary of it in the beginning of The Wounded Land, but it's just a snapshot.

While the story takes place a long time after the first series, most of it won't mean near as much without that background. Especially the story of Covenant himself.
