http://www.archive.org/stream/general...

This book was published in 1900, but the goodreads entry says 2010 and 2008. That is 2010 for the edition discussed, but 2008 for the original publication date.

The goodreads entry reads a little like an advertising post.

So, I change the "working settings" to make it all right? Match this to the original edition available on the archive.org site? Right?

No one else touch this, please, want to do it myself. Just calling into to confirm.

Lobstergirl Yes, you change the original pub date under "work settings." It doesn't matter what site you get the correct pub date from, as long as it's correct.

Ok, here I go. See you on the other side.

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments I have changed the original publication date, and given the book a blurb which discusses the good general.

Feel free to take a look and ensure that I have not stuffed up something.

Also, would it be appropriate to add the original (1900) version of the book to goodreads? This original can be downloaded freely, which leads to another question. Should a public domain ebook copy of the original be considered a separate version from the original, and listed separately on goodreads?

Lobstergirl Good blurb.

You certainly can add the 1900 edition. I have done that on occasion.

Should a public domain ebook copy of the original be considered a separate version from the original, and listed separately on goodreads?

Yes, they are different editions and should be listed separately. If you own the 1900 edition you'd probably want to shelve that, or if you owned the ebook, same. So it makes sense to have any and all editions listed.

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments Ok, thanks. The two versions of the original makes sense. I will add both, after my morning constitutional and coffee :).

Just keep in mind that the ebook edition does not have a pub date of 1900. If you can determine when the site that has it (which would be the publisher) first listed it, that's the pub date for the ebook. If not, leave that field blank for that edition.

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments Umm. I clicked the "add a new edition" option on the editions page and get the option to add a new book. When I add a new book it seems to be a new book, rather than an edition of the original book. Should I combine the two, or did I do something wrong?

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments Ok, all done. Phew... the most stressful first time for anything.

I added the ebook to the original hardback version, rather than the ebook version?

I added the url to the openlibrary.org page where the original .pdf is stored?

message 11: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Don't forget to add the publisher of the 1900 ed.

message 12: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl URL field is optional.

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments One more question :).

I came across a second biography of the good general Wauchope (popular fellow), published in 1905, listed on archive.org and google books, with a public domain .pdf, but it is not listed in goodreads. I can and will add this book, but, the author's name.

The author's full name, listed on these website is: George Brisbane Scott Douglas. In the book his name is given as George Douglas. From what I read in the "Librarian Manual" I should enter what is given in the book. Correct?

Whoopsie -- added now.

Ian (traveller1) | 88 comments So, is using the same biographical blurb in two different biographies of the same individual being lazy or simply efficient?

you can combine all the editions or you can separate them. But the a reader who searches, if they are combined it will be really helpful

As long as the text applies to both, I say go ahead and be efficient. :)

Openlibrary is not actually storing this book. They are providing a redirect to Archive.org that is storing the pdf. Therefore, I updated the url to the Archive.org link. I also added Archive.org as the publisher, and changed the publication date to match Archive.org's scan date.
