42) I'm also worried about that!
43) I agree, it made me feel a bit uncomfortable about the University. What place is it?
45) "I think there are a lot of adolescent hormones making him more impulsive." Good point!

I really liked it and he totally deserved to be put in place. I wonder if he allowed the injury to be as severe as it was to be able to get Kvothe expelled.
43) Did you think lashing were a bit extreme for what Kvothe did? Did you like how Kvothe managed to talk himself out of getting expelled and get accepted as an Arcanum?
It was too extreme. But I guess it was important to build the myth around him. It was obvious that the teacher was to blame and that he shouldn't be expelled.
44. Isn't it interesting no one at the university seems to think Chandrians are real?
It's very surprising that the masters don't believe it.
45. Do you think if Kvothe had made it to university and had never lived on the streets he'd have handled the situation with Hemme differently? I ask because of what he told Awryl as to why he took the nahlrout.
I don't know. I think he was arrogant with Ben and behaved rather reckless already then, but I think he would have been much calmer and less impulsive. I think the biggest difference would have been in the conflict with Ambrose.
46) I think Ambrose is to Kvothe what Malfoy is to Harry Potter. Is this reminding you a little of an adult version of Harry Potter? BTW, I keep forgetting how young Kvothe is. Does anyone else?
A little bit, especially with the children stories and the last HP book. Yes, I see him as at least 18 in my head. But maybe it's because the story is told from adult Kvothe's perspective.

#42 - Oh, I had considered Master Hemme allowing the injury to be more severe. Hmmmmm...
#43 - Good point about the myth building.
#44 - Very. Not sure where it is. Here is a map (the University is over by the yellow dot to the left side):

#45 - Excellent point about his arrogance with Ben. To some extent, he sets himself up for the troubles he incurs, where I would step back. Not in all, because I've certainly gotten myself into trouble with speaking up throughout my life.

27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anything to do with the Chandrians?
Tehlu seems to be on the opposite side effects f the Chandrian. Trapis' story gave us a nice back story on Tehlu and therefore a background on the religion and the regard for demons in the book. I think all of this will be important ant later.
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
I think he had been hardened from street life and thought it was what he had to do. It shows how he has great heart by how much he regrets it still.
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
I'm sure it will all be explained in time. Maybe Bast is part of the Chandrian? If Kvothe is the teacher it doesn't surprise me that Bast has not heard these stories before.
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
Pike took the last bit of Kvothe's parents from him. I can understand his need for revenge. Setting fire took it a bit far but kids do dumb things in anger. Kvothe was only 13 or so by then. A teen with no guidance and a miserable existence.
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
It sounds to me like something went wrong when Lyra brought him back to life and now he can't die. When Lyra died he lost sight of good because he was stuck in the mortal realm without her.
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?
They must not like the story of Lanre because of its context. It basically speaks of demons and death. They probably know more about it and are afraid that Skarpi will call the Chandrian upon the town.

#42 - Oh, I had considered Master Hemme allowing the injury to be more severe. Hmmmmm...
#43 - Good point about the myth building.
#44 - Very. Not sure where it is. Here is a map (th..."
Oh nice map! Thanks for the visual!

The more far fetched the idea the more fun the discussion. :)

42) What did you think of the way Kvothe handled Master Hemme?
I think that given the situation Hemme got what was coming to him, but at the same time, I would think that Kvothe would have been a bit more cautious. I guess he still doesn't think before he acts.
43) Did you think lashing were a bit extreme for what Kvothe did? Did you like how Kvothe managed to talk himself out of getting expelled and get accepted as an Arcanum?
I think when dealing with magic, the punishment is always a bit more harsh. It seems like more harm can be done than not when someone goes off the deep end. I think because he harmed someone with magic they may be scared of what lengths he could go to in order to get revenge or to get his way. It is obvious that he is extremely gifted.
44) Isn't it interesting no one at the university seems to think Chandrians are real?
I find this odd. I am sure there is a plot reason for this, but it just has me puzzled.
45) Do you think if Kvothe had made it to university and had never lived on the streets he'd have handled the situation with Hemme differently? I ask because of what he told Awryl as to why he took the nahlrout.
I think he would have reacted a bit different. He would have been more influenced by his parents and their teachings. I don't think they would have condoned his behavior.
46) I think Ambrose is to Kvothe what Malfoy is to Harry Potter. Is this reminding you a little of an adult version of Harry Potter? BTW, I keep forgetting how young Kvothe is. Does anyone else?
Indeed, I keep thinking he is in his twenties, but he is not even close. It is so weird. It also does remind me a bit of HP.

47) Is anyone else getting the feeling that most students aren't as versatile as Kvothe in their studies? It seems he could excel at anything and most seem to focus on one aspect/line of study.
48) What did you think of the story of Elodin? Sounds like the story we heard earlier in the book. Sounds like magic can definitely make people mad. I wonder why?
49) Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever."
50) "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise?
51) "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh?
52) "What does our story need? What vital element is it lacking?"
"Women, Reshi," Bast said immediately. "There's a real paucity of women."
Kvothe smiled. "Not Women, Bast. A woman. The woman."
So who do you think the woman is Devi or someone we're yet to meet? Devi just doesn't seem to fit the bill.
53) I find it interesting that to everyone else it appears Kvothe is attempting to show off when he's really just trying to learn as much as can before he can't afford the university any more. I'm thinking no one as poor as he has ever made it in before. Do you think any of them comprehend what he's been through or truly see his situation?
54) I liked the dueling in class. How about you? Well, now we get a second look at how binding can injure and/or kill a person. Definitely something to respect.
55) Were you surprised at what his friends did? Do you think he should have told someone about his predicament?

47) Is anyone else getting the feeling that most students aren't as versatile as Kvothe in their studies? It seems he could excel at anything and most seem to focus on one aspect/line of study. It makes me wonder what Kvothe's experience would be like if he hadn't been raised the way he was. It certainly wouldn't be as interesting but it does make me wonder what the other students education/upbringing was like. I'm so random.
49) Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever." I hit my head and thought d'oh! Also giggled a little at his stupidity and wondered what he thought would happen.
50) "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise? I'm thinking this wasn't the wisest of things but also made total sense if you look at it from a teenage boy/ego perspective. All those big magician egos in one place + testosterone + academia = recipe for disaster.
51) "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh? Yeah. I'm scared for him. Ambrose is a shady shady guy.
I think that while I'm sure there are some other poor students around, that Kvothe's situation is a first for the University. I wish he would talk to his friends about where he came from but I also think he doesn't want the pity/potential help they would have given.

56) I don't know about anyone else, but I wish we could hear and see Kvothe play. What dumb luck to play the same instrument as Ambrose. Just another pointy spike between them. Ambrose must be jealous of Kvothe.
57) Well, now we know who 'The woman' is that Kvothe mentioned and Lisa Kay was right, she's back. That is the lovely Denna is back. So it sounds like she might be his downfall. Will Ambrose do something to her? I shudder at the thought. Could she betray him?
58) Could Auri be the female student that disappeared that had some link to Ambrose?
59) Who is this mysterious Puppet person?
60) Did you like how Kvothe was able to play despite the broken string?
61) What do you think of the way Kvothe is with Denna and what about Denna? It almost seems like she lived a similar lifestyle to Kvothe.
62) What do you think of Devi? Do you predict she'll sell Kvothe's blood? Did he do something that will later be proven to be a big mistake?

I think it's a bit of desperation and a bit of arrogance. But he also seems very talented - in the first chapter he said he'd learned the Chronicler's language in a day, right?
48. What did you think of the story of Elodin? Sounds like the story we heard earlier in the book. Sounds like magic can definitely make people mad. I wonder why?
Don't know. Is this why Kvothe is now at an inn?
49. Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever."
I think he had valid reasons for doing it, I mean Elodin could have called the wind. But obviously too much trust too soon.
50. "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." Did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise?
I get his point. I guess it's better to be infamous than not at all for Kvothe. And maybe it's a shield so that people won't pity him for being poor. Wise - I don't know.
51. "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh?
Definitely. I'm not sure how to feel about these "spoilers" or teasers about the future.
52. "What does our story need? What vital element is it lacking?"
"Women, Reshi," Bast said immediately. "There's a real paucity of women."
Kvothe smiled. "Not Women, Bast. A woman. The woman."
So who do you think the woman is Devi or someone we're yet to meet? Devi just doesn't seem to fit the bill.
I'm still thinking it will be Denna from the road.
53. I find it interesting that to everyone else it appears Kvothe is attempting to show off when he's really just trying to learn as much as can before he can't afford the university any more. I'm thinking no one as poor as he has ever made it in before. Do you think any of them comprehend what he's been through or truly see his situation?
No. But I think this story definitely touches on the right to education and maybe, just maybe there is some political statement hidden in this.
54. I liked the dueling in class. How about you? Well, now we get a second look at how binding can injure and/or kill a person. Definitely something to respect.
Me too! Reminded me again of Harry Potter.

They are definitively arch enemies.
57. Well, now we know who 'The woman' is that Kvothe mentioned and Lisa Kay was right, she's back. That is the lovely Denna is back. So it sounds like she might be his downfall. Will Ambrose do something to her? I shudder at the thought. Could she betray him?
We'll see.
58. Could Auri be the female student that disappeared that had some link to Ambrose?
I hadn't thought about it. It's a good theory. I'm very curious and confused about Auri. Is she a student, a former student or just someone living there?
60. Did you like how Kvothe was able to play despite the broken string?
Yes! I was so relieved that something was going his way at last.
61. What do you think of the way Kvothe is with Denna and what about Denna? It almost seems like she lived a similar lifestyle to Kvothe.
Yeah, I think they have more in common than they realize. I don't get a grasp at how old Denna is. Older than Kvothe?
62. What do you think of Devi? Do you predict she'll sell Kvothe's blood? Did he do something that will later be proven to be a big mistake?
It's to soon to tell, but right now I got a good feeling about her. And it seems like she wants to work it out. I am glad he won't be in trouble with the thugs. But I'm constantly stressed about his money situation. And I'm also stressed about the fact that when he gets money he has to carry it around in his pockets.

56) I don't know about anyone else, but I wish we could hear and see Kvothe play. What dumb luck to play the same instrument as Ambrose. Just another pointy spike between them. Ambrose must be jealous of Kvothe. I would love to hear him play. Let's get Rothfuss to make a soundtrack! Ambrose is evil. EVIL.
57) Well, now we know who 'The woman' is that Kvothe mentioned and Lisa Kay was right, she's back. That is the lovely Denna is back. So it sounds like she might be his downfall. Will Ambrose do something to her? I shudder at the thought. Could she betray him? I worry that Ambrose will do something to Denna once he finds out how important she seems to be to Kvothe.
58) Could Auri be the female student that disappeared that had some link to Ambrose? I hadn't thought about this but it's a good theory! Hmmmm...
59) Who is this mysterious Puppet person? I don't know and it's driving me nuts!
60) Did you like how Kvothe was able to play despite the broken string? So relieved. But I reiterate. AMBROSE IS EVIL. Ahem...nothing to see here.
61) What do you think of the way Kvothe is with Denna and what about Denna? It almost seems like she lived a similar lifestyle to Kvothe. I think they have a lot in common, more then either of them will admit to. It's nice to see Kvothe struggle a little over this. Makes him more human to turn into a dolt over girls I think.
62) What do you think of Devi? Do you predict she'll sell Kvothe's blood? Did he do something that will later be proven to be a big mistake? I'm cautiously optimistic that she can see through bravado and isn't as scary as she seems. I hope she turns out to be a good ally for Kvothe and he doesn't end up in trouble for trying to better himself through the University.

Susanne, I'm behind and both Mary and I have migraines. Do you think you can do the next set of DQs for us? Thanks so much, if you can! Not a problem, if you can't. ☺

47) Is anyone else getting the feeling that most students aren't as versatile as Kvothe in their studies? It seems he could excel at anything and most seem to focus on one aspect/line of study.
I am definitely getting that vibe. It seems like he may be one of those with a photographic memory of sorts. I am guessin why that makes every subject so much easier for him. Not to mention he comes up with clever ways to help him study.
48) What did you think of the story of Elodin? Sounds like the story we heard earlier in the book. Sounds like magic can definitely make people mad. I wonder why?
I assume it is because of the way they are splitting their mind. I am sure too much of that would make even the most sane people go crazy.
49) Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever."
I thought for sure that Elodin was going to sponsor him after that. I find it odd that he would be surprised by Kvothe's behavior. I mean, obviously Kvothe has shown his determination ten fold.
50) "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise?
I thought it was funny. I do see, however, how it could be dangerous. What if the wrong rumor got into the wrong hands. I also see how it could be advantageous.
51) "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh?
Yes, I can't wait to find out what.
I kind of hope it will be Devi. She isn't the obvious choice because he didn't swoon at their first meeting. I doubt it will be her though.
53) I find it interesting that to everyone else it appears Kvothe is attempting to show off when he's really just trying to learn as much as can before he can't afford the university any more. I'm thinking no one as poor as he has ever made it in before. Do you think any of them comprehend what he's been through or truly see his situation?
I don't think he has shared any of his true life with them, so I am sure that they have no idea of the severity of it. I don't see how they can't have at least some idea of it though, especially if his clothes look as bad as he says they do. I think he also puts on a cocky attitude to make them think he is that way.
54) I liked the dueling in class. How about you? Well, now we get a second look at how binding can injure and/or kill a person. Definitely something to respect.
I really liked the dueling too. I hope we see some more if it later in the book.
55) Were you surprised at what his friends did? Do you think he should have told someone about his predicament?

#47- I wondered the same thing. I wish we could get a glimpse of what the other students truly think of him.
#50- Again, I forgot about Kvothe's age. It seems to make sense that he would create rumors like that in a teenage way.

56) I don't know about anyone else, but I wish we could hear and see Kvothe play. What dumb luck to play the same instrument as Ambrose. Just another pointy spike between them. Ambrose must be jealous of Kvothe.
I wish we could hear him too. It must be beautiful. I bet the jealousy and Kvothe's arrogance is what has caused them to be such enemies. I am sure Ambrose only likes himself.
57) Well, now we know who 'The woman' is that Kvothe mentioned and Lisa Kay was right, she's back. That is the lovely Denna is back. So it sounds like she might be his downfall. Will Ambrose do something to her? I shudder at the thought. Could she betray him?
I am wondering exactly what is going to happen with them. It seems like something is going to happen to her. I keep getting this feeling like she is going to die or something. I don't know how, but that is what it sounds like.
58) Could Auri be the female student that disappeared that had some link to Ambrose?
Oh my! I didn't even think of that. I wonder if we will ever know. I wonder how it would play into the story if it was?
59) Who is this mysterious Puppet person?
I have wondered the same thing. I have no idea.
60) Did you like how Kvothe was able to play despite the broken string?
I thought it was very fitting. I am glad that he is now able to afford things that he so desparately needs. I hope that he is wise with his money and doesn't squander it away.
61) What do you think of the way Kvothe is with Denna and what about Denna? It almost seems like she lived a similar lifestyle to Kvothe.
I don't see the way he is with her as being anything special. I think he describes feelings of love accurately. I feel like Denna is a mystery still, even though this is the second time that we have met her. I for some reason don't really like her.
62) What do you think of Devi? Do you predict she'll sell Kvothe's blood? Did he do something that will later be proven to be a big mistake?
I doubt she will sell his blood, but I think something is going to happen there. I am not sure what yet.
YAY I am caught up!

33. What impressed your more? The way Kvothe handed the man in “The Broken Binding” or how he went to the tailor?
The tailor was awesome. I never would of thought to do any of that. Kvothe is definitely intelligent.
34. I was expecting Kvothe to leave some money with Trapis, but in hindsight, I can see he needs the money for his travels. Think he’ll be back to help Trapis more? Or somehow send him money?
I think so. Kvothe seems like the type that always repays a favor. It was nice of him to tell of hiding spot as well. Give it to another kid in need.
35. Kvothe’s life would have surely been different if he had kept his father’s lute. I guess the instrument was so expensive; he never could have saved up enough to buy one. However, don’t you think he could have shown someone in Tarbean that he could play so well?
He couldn't really show anyone with how rugged he looked. No one would give him the time of day. Plus minstrels aren't exactly the highest class in society themselves. I don't know how far it would have gotten him.
36. Do you think Kvothe will run into Denna again? Roent, Reta, Derrik, or Josn?
I don't think so. But you never know. They did spend a lot of time describing them for ppl to just pass through the story. Who knows.
37. I must admit, Chapter 36 was one of my favorites. What were your impressions of Kvothe’s University interview? Which Master stood out the most to you?
His interview was awesome. I wonder if he will ever tell others that he was paid to attend.
38. Any guesses as to which character will become Kvothe’s closest friend? His nemesis? His best subject?
I think the rude kid in the archives will become a nemesis. The guy that showed him around will probably be a close friend although I don't really see Kvothe as a close friend type of person. I'm bad with names too.
39. Why does Savoy, the Modeganian noble, have to pay his tuition out of his allowance? He sold his rings? Is he slowly going broke? Or does he just have an extravagant lifestyle?
Maybe his father doesn't support his university time? Or maybe he's not as wealthy as he pretends to be?
40. Arcanum means “a secret know only to the members of a small select group; a secret of nature, the kind that was formerly sought by alchemists.” Do you think Kvothe will make it into the Arcanum before the end of his third term, or before?
Definitely early. He will do everything early.
41. Book Quote: Besides, anger can keep you warm at night, and wounded pride can spur a man to wondrous things. What did you think of the last sentence of Chapter 37?
It's intriguing. Anger can definitely fuel a man to do things never thought possible whether for good or bad.

I can do them! I've been out shopping for bridal dresses all day but I'll get them up in a bit. Hope you feel better!

Great! Thanks!
Bridal dresses? You getting married, Susanne?

Bridal dresses? You getting married, Susanne?"
Yes, I am getting married in May next year! Apparently I should have been looking for bridal dresses months ago but I found some really nice ones that could be made in time for the wedding. Crazy! xD

Discussion questions for Chapters 61-67
63. What did you think of Kvothe's song “Jackass, Jackass”? I'm beginning to think that Kvothe is also to blame for the escalating conflict. Were you surprised that the masters didn't punish Kvothe for the song?
64. Book quote: "Demonstrate the patience and prudence which you have heretofore been lacking”. Do you think Kvothe will ever be let into the archives?
65. Denna keeps disappearing and reappearing. What is she doing? Do you think she has feelings for Kvothe?
66. I was not surprised that Kvothe wanted to do his own lamp. Of course he made a thieves' lamp. Do you think he will use it to sneak into the archives?
67. Finally we got to see a little of the hero Kvothe. Book quote: "It was my first taste of being a hero. I found it quite to my liking." It makes me optimistic that he will turn out to be good in the end. What did you think of his rescue? Were you surprised he risked his life to save Fela?

42) What did you think of the way Kvothe handled Master Hemme?
Very well done.
43) Did you think lashing were a bit extreme for what Kvothe did? Did you like how Kvothe managed to talk himself out of getting expelled and get accepted as an Arcanum?
Definitely ge s himself in and out of a lot of trouble. I'm glad he didn't get expelled yet although it's only a matter of time. Lashings weren't extreme in this time setting so not really. Sucks though.
44) Isn't it interesting no one at the university seems to think Chandrians are real?
They have no reason to believe they are real. Kvothe does. I have a feeling they will all be proven wrong in time.
45) Do you think if Kvothe had made it to university and had never lived on the streets he'd have handled the situation with Hemme differently? I ask because of what he told Awryl as to why he took the nahlrout.
I think a lot of things would be different had he not lived on the street. He would have more money to begin with. At this point he want to get through university as quickly as possible to simply afford it.
46) I think Ambrose is to Kvothe what Malfoy is to Harry Potter. Is this reminding you a little of an adult version of Harry Potter? BTW, I keep forgetting how young Kvothe is. Does anyone else?
I've had a lot of ppl describe this book to me as adult Harry Potter.

Discussion questions for Chapters 61-67
63. What did you think of Kvothe's song “Jackass, Jackass”? I'm beginning to think that Kvothe is also to blame for the escalating conflict. Were you surprised that the masters didn't punish Kvothe for the song?
I giggled quite a bit. I think that Kvothe is to blame for escalating the conflict too, but I do think that Ambrose was asking for it. I wasn't surprised that the masters didn't punish Kvothe, I think they all know what a jerk Ambrose is.
64. Book quote: "Demonstrate the patience and prudence which you have heretofore been lacking”. Do you think Kvothe will ever be let into the archives?
I think he is going to be expelled for trying to gain access to them. I don't ever see Kvothe as being patient. He seems to arrogant to have any patience at all and he doesn't seem to be learning any either.
65. Denna keeps disappearing and reappearing. What is she doing? Do you think she has feelings for Kvothe?
I think she has as many feelings as she can. I am thinking something was done to her by a man and that is why she is so skittish and standoffish. I am wondering if she isn't mixed up in something illegal.
66. I was not surprised that Kvothe wanted to do his own lamp. Of course he made a thieves' lamp. Do you think he will use it to sneak into the archives?
I think that is definitely his plan. I am not sure how well it is going to work for him.
67. Finally we got to see a little of the hero Kvothe. Book quote: "It was my first taste of being a hero. I found it quite to my liking." It makes me optimistic that he will turn out to be good in the end. What did you think of his rescue? Were you surprised he risked his life to save Fela?
I was surprised that that was his first thought. I am glad that he did because like you said, it does give me hope that he is going to turn out good in the end. I don't want him to be this arrogant little boy for too much longer.

Congratulations!

I am hoping to be getting married sometime in the near future myself. My boyfriend keeps asking questions, but he hasn't proposed yet.

Lara I hope he asks soon! *Crossing my fingers* Planning a wedding is so much fun (but also a little stressful). And being engaged is so much more romantic than I thought before xD

Thanks!!
64. That's my theory as well!
65. "I am thinking something was done to her by a man and that is why she is so skittish and standoffish." - Good theory, that could certainly explain her behavior. I think she is a very interesting character and I hope we get to know her better.
67. Me neither!

Ah! Questions are good. Questions are great. So neat, Laura. ☺

47) Is anyone else getting the feeling that most students aren't as versatile as Kvothe in their studies? It seems he could excel at anything and most seem to focus on one aspect/line of study.
They at least only study one at a time. I think most students learn the basics of all then specialize in one.
48) What did you think of the story of Elodin? Sounds like the story we heard earlier in the book. Sounds like magic can definitely make people mad. I wonder why?
Sounds like the story but wasn't quite the same seeing as how Kvothe nearly killed himself thinking it was the story. Maybe it was a lesson that fairy tales have pieces in truth but not their entirety.
49) Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever."
Maybe Elodin could have saved him and didn't. Maybe he couldn't save him and was only teasing the boy. Who knows.
50) "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise?
I think building his reputation helped him and spread in the untrue rumors made it sound like he was this mysterious guy that no one really knew. Definitely helps him though.
51) "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh?
I have a feeling we are still only at the beginning of the story.
I think we will soon find out
53) I find it interesting that to everyone else it appears Kvothe is attempting to show off when he's really just trying to learn as much as can before he can't afford the university any more. I'm thinking no one as poor as he has ever made it in before. Do you think any of them comprehend what he's been through or truly see his situation?
They might if he wasn't so proud to hide it. Then again sharing that info could also hurt him. Who knows.
54) I liked the dueling in class. How about you? Well, now we get a second look at how binding can injure and/or kill a person. Definitely something to respect.
It's definitely a dangerous endeavor. You have to really know what you are doing
55) Were you surprised at what his friends did? Do you think he should have told someone about his predicament?
They were only trying to help and they didn't know any better. I think he should trust his friends with the knowledge of his poor standing. He should also use his lute to make some money.

56) I don't know about anyone else, but I wish we could hear and see Kvothe play. What dumb luck to play the same instrument as Ambrose. Just another pointy spike between them. Ambrose must be jealous of Kvothe.
I think Ambrose played the lyre, not the lute, and from the sound of it he barely played and simply recited some poetry with it. Nothing like what Kvothe could do with an instrument. In a way Ambrose being there that night helped Kvothe as the string breaking truly showed how great of a player he was.
57) Well, now we know who 'The woman' is that Kvothe mentioned and Lisa Kay was right, she's back. That is the lovely Denna is back. So it sounds like she might be his downfall. Will Ambrose do something to her? I shudder at the thought. Could she betray him?
I wonder if Denna really doesn't remember him or if she assumes the same as him, that he didn't remember her and she's too embarrassed by that fact to bring it up in conversation. It would be sad if they were both playing around the topic of pining over each other just because they were afraid the other didn't remember. And why is she going by Dianne now?
58) Could Auri be the female student that disappeared that had some link to Ambrose?
I didn't think of that. Could be. Weren't they engaged or something like that?
59) Who is this mysterious Puppet person?
I was actually really confused about Puppet. I wasn't sure if I missed something since I was reading at work or what happened.
60) Did you like how Kvothe was able to play despite the broken string?
It definitely showed how amazing of a player he was. I think it even helped him to get his pipes in the end. He probably would have gotten them anyways, but I bet he got more praise and money from the broken string.
61) What do you think of the way Kvothe is with Denna and what about Denna? It almost seems like she lived a similar lifestyle to Kvothe.
She seems to live a varied life and is adept at changing her appearance and style to fit the world around her, similar to how Kvothe has had to do to survive in various situations. Of course I'm just guessing this is the case as we don't know if either the girl in the wagon or the girl in the bar is the real version of Denna or if neither are the real thing. I like to believe it's the girl that Kvothe spoke to under the stars on the wagon trip.
62) What do you think of Devi? Do you predict she'll sell Kvothe's blood? Did he do something that will later be proven to be a big mistake?
I don't think she'll sell his blood, but I do think she'll play a big part in the story. Something big will come of him being in debt to her or maybe from him beginning to use her books and such. Maybe she's the key to him getting kicked out of university for good (as we know it's coming soon)

47) Is anyone else getting the feeling that most students aren't as versatile as Kvothe in their studies? It seems he could excel at anything and most seem to focus on one aspect/line of study.
Very true. In this, I think he is unique.
48) What did you think of the story of Elodin? Sounds like the story we heard earlier in the book. Sounds like magic can definitely make people mad. I wonder why?
I think it influenced him becoming an innkeeper. Not sure why they go mad. Too much power?
49) Gah! What did you think of Kvothe jumping off the roof? Did you think he had it right before he plumpeted? "Congratulations," he said. "that was the stupidest thing I've ever seen." His expression was a mix of awe and disbelief. "Ever."
I think he thought that was what Elodin wanted. He trusted him.
50) "Reputation is like a sort of armor, or a weapon you can brandish if need be." Did you like how they spread rumors? Was it wise?
Well, it has it risks and dangers, but there is a big payoff if it works. Which it does for Kvothe, to a large extent.
51) "I thought he was harmless. I was a fool." Sounds like something really bad is coming in the future, huh?
Definitely! I’m worried about Ambrose.
I’m with Laura again, and hope it will be Devi, but doubt it. Maybe he’ll run into Denna again.
53) I find it interesting that to everyone else it appears Kvothe is attempting to show off when he's really just trying to learn as much as can before he can't afford the university any more. I'm thinking no one as poor as he has ever made it in before. Do you think any of them comprehend what he's been through or truly see his situation?
I concur. That is one of the reasons they don’t understand him. That, and he is brilliant.
54) I liked the dueling in class. How about you? Well, now we get a second look at how binding can injure and/or kill a person. Definitely something to respect.
Definitely!
55) Were you surprised at what his friends did? Do you think he should have told someone about his predicament?
Yes, they were only trying to help. I don’t understand why he isn’t using him lute yet. He feels he isn’t ready? Makes no sense to me when before, everyone on the caravan was blown away by his performance.

Does anyone want to do the DQs for Chapters 68-71?

63. What did you think of Kvothe's song “Jackass, Jackass”? I'm beginning to think that Kvothe is also to blame for the escalating conflict. Were you surprised that the masters didn't punish Kvothe for the song?
Not really. It's just a childish song. If they punished every kid at school for every little thing then they would always be whipping people. My guess is they figured Ambrose deserved it :-P
64. Book quote: "Demonstrate the patience and prudence which you have heretofore been lacking”. Do you think Kvothe will ever be let into the archives?
Nope. I think he'll try to sneak in and get kicked out of the university. Maybe Auri will show him the way in?
65. Denna keeps disappearing and reappearing. What is she doing? Do you think she has feelings for Kvothe?
She has feelings, she just isn't the type to stay still. She's gotta do what she must to stay alive in the same way Kvothe would.
66. I was not surprised that Kvothe wanted to do his own lamp. Of course he made a thieves' lamp. Do you think he will use it to sneak into the archives?
I wonder if Kvothe was really as innocent as he made himself out to be with the thieves lamp. Maybe he really didn't know. I think he will use it to get into the archives. Should come in handy.
67. Finally we got to see a little of the hero Kvothe. Book quote: "It was my first taste of being a hero. I found it quite to my liking." It makes me optimistic that he will turn out to be good in the end. What did you think of his rescue? Were you surprised he risked his life to save Fela?
Not surprised at all. He doesn't seem like the type that can let someone perish if he can help it. We already saw how bad he felt when he had to let that kid get beat up in the alley in Tarbean. He couldn't let Fela get hurt. Plus I think he does his best work thinking on his feet.

Jex: I think the holidays/illness/etc have caught up to people. I'm glad I finished the book because I'm about to get caught up in all that stuff too but hope to still checking on the thread.
