27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anything to do with the Chandrians?
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?

Sounds like a demon to me. Or something similar. Maybe something fae? I hadn't thought of him as anything different until they pointed it out. "
Good point! I'm also thinking something fae xD

Me, too, Susanne! I'm getting ready to start Chapter 24, but I might have to re-read 23, as I kept falling asleep and waking up last night trying to catch up! LOL!

Thank you so much for doing these, Laura! I was trying to catch up, so I stay up (off and on, LOL!) until 3 a.m. These were so nice to see posted this morning. ☺

#19- Thanks for sharing the medical side of things Lisa Kay! I went and looked it up so that I could have a better grasp of what you were talking about.
#21- I hope so too! I really liked Ben.
#22- I have been wondering how they knew too. I keep wondering if they have some kind of special powers that allow them to hear things when they are not around.

#19 - Yeah, it gets tricky with chest tubes or ventilators. The author must have had some grasp of A&P.
#22 - So, dumb questions...but I was about 99% sure they were the killers...but then, that would make them the Chandrians...since I believe the Chandrians did the killing. Right? Or were they something else and stumbled upon the scene afterwards. And what scared them off?

27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anything to do with the Chandrians?
>b>I was really fascinated. Especially since I watched an interview with Rothfuss where he said one of his first influences was the Bible. If you think about it a little slantwise, especially to a kid, it's like the most epic fantasy novel ever.
I do think the story ties into the Chandrians. Especially since we know that it was asking for stories about Lanre that broughtKovthe's father & his troupe to their notice.
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
I'd like to say that there's no way I could have ignored it, but I think we've all let something slide that we regret. When I was in high school everyone sort of knew that one of the teachers was inappropriately touching female students, but none of us ever really did anything about it. We'd make sure no one had tutoring sessions with him alone, but we never went to the administration with it.
Kvothe was just a kid himself with literally everything to lose. It's hard to fault that child for hunkering down and protecting himself even if you want to yell at the adult telling the story.
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
I'm assuming that somewhere on his travels Kvothe met Bast's people and learned that not all demons are the 'kill 'em now and dance on their bones' variety. Bast wanted to learn and Kvothe, possibly remembering what Ben was to him, took him on as a pupil. I get the feeling that they've been together for a while, but maybe not through all of the things that made Kvothe legend.
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
I'm not sure if we'll see Pike again. Maybe, but also maybe not. Children can hate more passionately than almost anyone and with the kind of life he'd had for the last several years his moral sensibilites would be blunted. Which is not to excuse him. It's an increadibly cruel thing to do. And if it had worked like he thought it would Pike would be dead. It's one of the first signs of the ruthelessness that in Kvothe that we'd gotten hints of from the young man and even from Chronicler.
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
It reminds me of Darth Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her lover is murdered and all Willow can feel is pain. If this one shining light is gone from the world then all that's left is pain. So, the answer, is to stop the pain by stopping the world. In a twisted way, it's like a mercy killing, which I think Lanre alludes to. The world is all darkness and pain. It's kinder to put an end to it then to let the suffering continue.
On the other hand, Lanre wants to die so that his own pain can end. I think he's hoping that if he causes enough damage that Selitos will kill him and that Selitos will be powerful enough to make it stick. It's kind of like suicide by cop.
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?
They remind me of the Inquisition. I'm assuming Skarpi's stories contridict what the current church dogma says, or at least would lead to questioning some of the things the church is doing or teaching. Therefore he is dangerous to the increadibly corrupt status quo. They don't want anyone reminding the people of what the original teachings of Tehlu were because they would seem to contradict the Justice's ability to arrest anyone and then extort money from the barkeep,

Thank you so much, Laura! I felt absolutely awful yesterday and then had to turn around and have some GI procedures done this morning. I'm not as sleepy as I thought I'd be from the anesthesia, so I'll try to get caught up today.

#27- Really? I guess I need to watch the interview with Rothfuss. I bet it is really interesting.
#28-I can totally see your point. I have been guilty of the same in the past, but I would hope that I would not do it in the future.
#29- Good theory. I think you are probably right. I hope we find out how they came to be together.
#30- I agree, children can be extremely cruel. I keep thinking of Kvothe as the good guy, but really we don't know much about him as an adult so you pointing out the hints of ruthlessness opened my eyes a bit.
#31-Interesting, the only problem I have with it, is how does that explain his behavior towards Kvothe and his family years and years down the road. It sounds like that pain has changed into true evil.
#32-I had the same thoughts.

Thank you so much, Laura! I felt absolutely awful yesterday and then had to turn around and have ..."
I was happy to do them. I hope you are feeling better!

Was it sad? Hopefully not depressing. You rated it 5 stars so I'm guessing you liked it?

Thanks for taking it over. Woke up this morning with the worst case of cramps I've had in a long time. Checked in briefly to see you had posted then reached for the ibuprofen and heating pad. I thought I'd ditched them after having kids.

11. What do you think of the importance placed on names in this book? Book quote: "And names are strange things. Dangerous things." - Ben
Kvoth definitely has a lot. I'm going to have to pay closer attemtion.
12. Impressions of Kvothe's parents? And the Edema Ruh? What do you think of Kvothe's life on the road?
Sounded like he had a fun childhood. Definitely different from what most had, but I think for him it was perfect.
13. What are your thoughts of Abenthy (Ben) the arcanist? Book quote: "I ask that you not hold it against him. He meant well." Will Kvothe learn more than is good for him?
Could something he taught him have lead to Kvothe's downfall?
14. What do you think of the magic system, sympathy? Do you find it creative? The mind games Ben taught Kvothe - Heart of Stone and Seek the Stone - make my brain hurt.
Some of it I got some of it was a tad confusing and I had to reread just to make sure I got it, but overall I like it.
15. Do you think Kvothe's thirst for knowledge - combined with his aptitude for learning - will get him into trouble?
Could happen.
16. What did you make of the conversation about the Chandrian?
I found it interesting. Would definitely like to learn more.
17. Did you expect that Bast was more than he seemed? Why did Chronicler react so violently?
I definitely didn't expect hooves. Made me think of Mister Tumnus (mispelled the name?) from Narnia.
18. What did you think of the first part of Kvothe's story? Hooked yet? Any thoughts not covered in the DQs?
Wasn't hooked at this point, but things are starting to get more interesting.

19. What did you think of Kvothe binding the air in his lungs with the air outside of him? Were you surprised that he could do such a thing without training? Do you think he will be more cautious in the future?
What was truly surprising was that Ben was flabbergasted. It took him a while to figure out what was happening it seemed.
20. Do you think we will hear more about the greystones (waystones)? They seem to hold some importance since they are mentioned in two different chapters.
I hope so. It seems like there might be more to them.
21. Were you surprised by Ben's quick departure? Do you think we will see him again?
I was very surprised by his quick departure and hope we see him later on in the story.
22. What a sad scene! I felt so sorry for Kvothe. I really liked his family and traveling troupe. Do you think that the Chandrians were who killed them? It sounds like it had something to do with Kvothe's parents new song. Thoughts?
It did sound like it had to do with the song since the guy said they were singing the wrong song. Makes me think these people were the ones from the song. I was surprised they left Kvothe alive
23. What did you think of Cinder and Lord Haliax? Again, we have the mention of "the inner turnings of someone's name". Do you think this has to do with Lord Haliax's ability to control his gang?
Very interesting villians.
24. What did you think about the doors to the mind. I thought it was a great true life metaphor of how we tend to deal with pain. Do you think Kvothe's mind is trying to give him clues about something through his dream?
I did like the metaphor as well. I think it's trying to make sense of it all. When something that horrific happens you want it to make sense. Sometimes it doesn't.
25. Tarbean sounds like a terrible place. Was anyone else surprised that Kvothe didn't use his magic to defend himself against Pike and his gang? Why do you think he didn't?
I was very surprised. I thought he would and was miffed when he didn't. I have no clue why he didn't use it.
26. Wow, Trapis and his home are pretty depressing. Do you think it will play a larger part in the story?
Yes.

27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anything to do with the Chandrians?
I was thinking that too. It must.
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
I guess he had to figure out if there truly was anything he could do. It wouldn't be easy to turn a blind eye.
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
Sounds like they're friends, but Kvothe hasn't divulged much about himself.
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
I am too. Setting the boy on fire was a bit too much. He didn't seem to regret it either.
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
I think it was his grief, but am not sure. Did he make a deal and had to pay the price to come back to his love?
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?
I'm not totally sure. Perhaps bad things can happen when certain stories are revealed. I have to admit I foresaw something happening to Kvothe's parents when Kvothe said he liked to remember his parents "that" way.

#27- Really? I guess I need to watch the interview with Rothfuss. I bet it is really interesting.
It was on the Sword & Laser Podcast

You know I was wondering if the town they sang the song in was destroyed as well? If not could Ben have been the one who told the Chandrians? As his departure was abrupt I can't help but think there was a reason. Maybe he was a spy?

Wow, that thought never crossed my mind! It seems like a very good theory though.

Was it sad? Hopefully not depressing. You rated it 5 stars so I'm guessing you liked it?"
I adored this book. I am having a rough week so I might be feeling the whole thing a little more but it is really really one of the best books I've read in a long time. Already purchased the sequel.

Good Gravy Beans!"
LOL...yeah I finally had some time to read.

A little nagging part of me was wondering the same things!

27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anything to do with the Chandrians?
Yes, it had biblical and mythological overtones, but I liked it. I’m thinking, “Yes!”
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
Oh, at that age and being as scared and alone (and up against that number), I think I could have. And, like Kvothe, it would have haunted me all my life. This was definitely a turning point for him. Still, even at that age, I probably would have gone and checked on him after they finished.
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
For a few moments, before I knew what he was, I thought he was female. So, no, I haven’t a clue. Maybe Kvothe is just not an elitist, so their relationship is of equals?
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
Eep! That was pretty drastic. Very different from just killing him. Being burned to death is torture, IMHO. Awful. Still, I’m reserving judgment on Kvothe.
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
I listened to it twice and read it once. I was struggling with why Lanre was burning the towns in an effort to find a way to bring Lyra back to life; still not 100% straight on that, unless he was trying to get Selitos’ rath.
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?
I’m with Sara on this; it must be in opposition to current church dogma.

I can do the Discussion Questions, if no one else has started them.
Let me know.

33. What impressed your more? The way Kvothe handed the man in “The Broken Binding” or how he went to the tailor?
34. I was expecting Kvothe to leave some money with Trapis, but in hindsight, I can see he needs the money for his travels. Think he’ll be back to help Trapis more? Or somehow send him money?
35. Kvothe’s life would have surely been different if he had kept his father’s lute. I guess the instrument was so expensive; he never could have saved up enough to buy one. However, don’t you think he could have shown someone in Tarbean that he could play so well?
36. Do you think Kvothe will run into Denna again? Roent, Reta, Derrik, or Josn?
37. I must admit, Chapter 36 was one of my favorites. What were your impressions of Kvothe’s University interview? Which Master stood out the most to you?
38. Any guesses as to which character will become Kvothe’s closest friend? His nemesis? His best subject?
39. Why does Savoy, the Modeganian noble, have to pay his tuition out of his allowance? He sold his rings? Is he slowly going broke? Or does he just have an extravagant lifestyle?
40. Arcanum means “a secret know only to the members of a small select group; a secret of nature, the kind that was formerly sought by alchemists.” Do you think Kvothe will make it into the Arcanum before the end of his third term, or before?
41. Book Quote: Besides, anger can keep you warm at night, and wounded pride can spur a man to wondrous things. What did you think of the last sentence of Chapter 37?

19. What did you think of Kvothe binding the air in his lungs with the air outside of him? Were you surprised that he could do such a thing without training? Do you think he will be more cautious in the future?
At first I didn't understand why it wasn't working right. Makes sense after it was explained a bit better though. Seems like a mistake that could be easily overlooked by a novice that thinks he's being brilliant.
20. Do you think we will hear more about the greystones (waystones)? They seem to hold some importance since they are mentioned in two different chapters.
I think they will come up again in a similar fashion as they dream that Kvothe had with the double circles and the one across the top. I think it will be a big part of the story to come.
21. Were you surprised by Ben's quick departure? Do you think we will see him again?
He had to leave some time. Makes sense that he would disappear before tragedy struck. Makes the story more interesting. I do think we will see more of Ben later on. Maybe Ben leaving to run a tavern has something to do with why Kvothe is currently running a tavern.
22. What a sad scene! I felt so sorry for Kvothe. I really liked his family and traveling troupe. Do you think that the Chandrians were who killed them? It sounds like it had something to do with Kvothe's parents new song. Thoughts?
Definitely Chandrians. When his father sang the song he used thier names and thus called upon them ? They mentioned something about having to rid the world of those that sang about them. I hope we learn more soon.
23. What did you think of Cinder and Lord Haliax? Again, we have the mention of "the inner turnings of someone's name". Do you think this has to do with Lord Haliax's ability to control his gang?
Probably. Definitely power in a name. Just think if there was that kind of power in a name today. Although I guess there is if you count identity theft...
24. What did you think about the doors to the mind. I thought it was a great true life metaphor of how we tend to deal with pain. Do you think Kvothe's mind is trying to give him clues about something through his dream?
I liked that it was different then the typical stages of grief. I think the dreams are definitely telling us something about the future. At least the couple that he didn't say something about the past. Especially the one about the waystones.
25. Tarbean sounds like a terrible place. Was anyone else surprised that Kvothe didn't use his magic to defend himself against Pike and his gang? Why do you think he didn't?
I don't think he was ready to use magic again. He wasn't himself yet after the tragedy and hadn't used magic since it happened. I don't know if he could have used magic if he tried. I think if he did it would have went horribly wrong.
26. Wow, Trapis and his home are pretty depressing. Do you think it will play a larger part in the story?
Yea. Seems like a whole lost boys scenario. I wonder if Trapis helps him get into the university somehow? Seems like that's the logical next step to the story as he leaves Tarbean at age .. 15? And the beginning said he got kicked out sooner then most get in and most don't enter til 17 at the earliest.

27. What did you think of Tarpis' story? It was very similar to events in the Bible, but had a few mythology aspects too. Do you think the story has anythin..."
I want to say ditto that on all your answers! Exactly my thoughts.

I'm not sure how I felt about it. I know we are in the fantasy world but it made everything a little bit less real. The fact that he grew up so fast shows that the laws of nature does not hold for him and then anything is possible. I guess it will be important later. Hunch, demons and the Chandrians are connected in some way.
28. So many sad stories about Kvothe growing up. Could you have turned a blind eye on the boys in the alley?
I have no idea. I think after leaving that way the sense of self-preservation is too strong.
29. So Bast doesn't know as much about Kvothe as I previously thought. I am still not really understanding this relationship that Kvothe and Bast have. Anyone else have thoughts?
I think they met up after whatever Kvothe is haunted for.
30. I am a bit disturbed by the lengths Kvothe went to to get revenge on Pike. What did you think about him setting Pike on fire? Does it make you think differently of Kvothe? Will we see Pike again?
It was definitely a very bad sign. Revenge is never the answer. And with the techniques Ben thought him he should have been able to do without. However, I got the impression that setting Pike on fire was a warning not to come after him.
31. What did you think of Skarpi and his stories? We know now how Haliax got his name and who he is. Did anyone else get confused by the Lanre story? I still am not sure exactly what caused Lanre to burn all of those cities.
I'm with Sara, he said that the world had to be saved from pained so I think in his twisted madness he thought he was acting out of kindness.
32.Why do you think Justice and his men dislike Skarpi? It sounds like he used to be one of them. Any ideas on what about his story upset them?
First I thought they were Chandrian's in disguise but I don't think that now. Probably opposed the Church Dogma but I got the impression that Skarpi is more powerful that them and maybe we will see him again.

33. What impressed your more? The way Kvothe handed the man in "The Broken Binding" or how he went to the tailor?
The way he went to the tailor. I loved that he found his inner strength again. And I think it's pretty telling how it does not matter what you wear (or not wear lol!) but how you wear them.
34. I was expecting Kvothe to leave some money with Trapis, but in hindsight, I can see he needs the money for his travels. Think he'll be back to help Trapis more? Or somehow send him money?
I don't know. It felt pretty much as a goodbye.
35. Kvothe's life would have surely been different if he had kept his father's lute. I guess the instrument was so expensive; he never could have saved up enough to buy one. However, don't you think he could have shown someone in Tarbean that he could play so well?
I don't even know if he remembered until he saw it. Or thought that he could have used that skill into something that gives money.
36. Do you think Kvothe will run into Denna again? Roent, Reta, Derrik, or Josn?
My hunch is that we will meet Denna again. Maybe she's the girl he referred to in the beginning?
37. I must admit, Chapter 36 was one of my favorites. What were your impressions of Kvothe’s University interview? Which Master stood out the most to you?
Mine too! I liked them all in different way. What stood out the most to me was the questions about his farther, what's the connection there? And it was very brave asking for a scholarship and I think that also told a lot about Kvothe's character.
38. Any guesses as to which character will become Kvothe's closest friend? His nemesis? His best subject?
Sympathy? Closest friend I would guess Simmon and nemesis Ambrose.
39. Why does Savoy, the Modeganian noble, have to pay his tuition out of his allowance? He sold his rings? Is he slowly going broke? Or does he just have an extravagant lifestyle?
Maybe his parents don't want to support him? Or he tries to keep up the facade in spit the family going broke. I didn't reflect on that.
40. Arcanum means "a secret know only to the members of a small select group; a secret of nature, the kind that was formerly sought by alchemists." Do you think Kvothe will make it into the Arcanum before the end of his third term, or before?
Before. Definitely before.
41. Book Quote: "Besides, anger can keep you warm at night, and wounded pride can spur a man to wondrous things". What did you think of the last sentence of Chapter 37?
I think this was a turning point for Kvothe and I think we will see how anger continues to motivate him. Some people give up, I think Kvothe will fight back.

33. What impressed your more? The way Kvothe handed the man in “The Broken Binding” or how he went to the tailor?
The way he handled the guy at the Broken Binding. He reminds me of a teacher I once had. If you went to him about a test question that was incorrectly marked wrong, he'd find something else to mark off for and you'd end up losing more points than you originally had taken off. He is not a sweet guy, but I still like him for some reason, but his temper worries me. Definitley not someone I'd want to get on my bad side.
34. I was expecting Kvothe to leave some money with Trapis, but in hindsight, I can see he needs the money for his travels. Think he’ll be back to help Trapis more? Or somehow send him money?
I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
35. Kvothe’s life would have surely been different if he had kept his father’s lute. I guess the instrument was so expensive; he never could have saved up enough to buy one. However, don’t you think he could have shown someone in Tarbean that he could play so well?
This is a tricky thing. He'd have to prove himself and once his father's lute was broken he had no way to truly do that. Additionally, he was so young that many would think he'd want to steal or just play with the lute.
36. Do you think Kvothe will run into Denna again? Roent, Reta, Derrik, or Josn?
I'd say it's not likely, especially since he said he knew he wouldn't see Denna again. One of the bad things about a story being told in the future about things that happened in the past.
37. I must admit, Chapter 36 was one of my favorites. What were your impressions of Kvothe’s University interview? Which Master stood out the most to you?
Very fun. Strangely enough I felt very proud of Kvothe.
38. Any guesses as to which character will become Kvothe’s closest friend? His nemesis? His best subject?
We'll have to wait and see. No idea yet. Hopefully he gets more than one best friend.
39. Why does Savoy, the Modeganian noble, have to pay his tuition out of his allowance? He sold his rings? Is he slowly going broke? Or does he just have an extravagant lifestyle?
Maybe he's afraid to confess he's not very good to his family? Maybe they'd make him go home if they knew? Maybe it's his dream and his parent's aren't happy?
40. Arcanum means “a secret know only to the members of a small select group; a secret of nature, the kind that was formerly sought by alchemists.” Do you think Kvothe will make it into the Arcanum before the end of his third term, or before?
I thought he said earlier in the story, I may be wrong, that he was one of the youngest to become Arcanum.
41. Book Quote: Besides, anger can keep you warm at night, and wounded pride can spur a man to wondrous things. What did you think of the last sentence of Chapter 37?
I marked that one too. Some really good quotes. The thing Kvothe is missing in that statement is that wounded pride can also spur you to do really stupid things too.

#33 – Yes, I thought that was a fun scene. Love your answer, LOL!
#34 – Hmmmm. I’m betting he’ll send a donation later in life.
#35 – He mentioned once or twice that singers or musicians could make a pretty penny and I just thought this was weird. Maybe it was just me. I guess the class difference between him (where he was cast down to) and the people that played were too much of a gap.
#36 – Ah! We’ll see.
#37 –Glad you enjoyed it, too, Susanne! Yes, why the question about his father?
#39 – I’m just wondering if Savoy is just a character for contrast and amusement, or if this character will mature, or possibly offer something to Kvothe?
#40 – Me, too!
#41 – Precisely, Susanne! (Agree with what you said in #30, too.)

33. What impressed your more? The way Kvothe handed the man in “The Broken Binding” or how he went to the tailor?
I was more impressed with the incident at "The Broken Binding". Anyone can act like a pompous prick and get their way, but few can trick a pawn man.
34. I was expecting Kvothe to leave some money with Trapis, but in hindsight, I can see he needs the money for his travels. Think he’ll be back to help Trapis more? Or somehow send him money?
I am not sure that we will ever see Trapis more. I think he tried to help out the orphans by telling them of his secret hideout. I think he knows that he may never be back to that area again. He might eventually be able to send him money though.
35. Kvothe’s life would have surely been different if he had kept his father’s lute. I guess the instrument was so expensive; he never could have saved up enough to buy one. However, don’t you think he could have shown someone in Tarbean that he could play so well?
There are a lot of things that I wondered why he didn't do them. Playing the lute for money was one of them. I guess due to the importance of a person's instrument, no one would have let him play it.
36. Do you think Kvothe will run into Denna again? Roent, Reta, Derrik, or Josn?
I doubt it. The farewell scene between them seemed so very final.
37. I must admit, Chapter 36 was one of my favorites. What were your impressions of Kvothe’s University interview? Which Master stood out the most to you?
Kilvin stood out most to me. I thought he is one of those hard to win over types that will end up being his greatest supporter. I liked this chapter too.
38. Any guesses as to which character will become Kvothe’s closest friend? His nemesis? His best subject?
I think Simmon is going to end up being a good friend to him and obviously Ambrose is going to he his nemesis. I am not sure about his greatest subject yet. I have a feeling we will be surprised.
39. Why does Savoy, the Modeganian noble, have to pay his tuition out of his allowance? He sold his rings? Is he slowly going broke? Or does he just have an extravagant lifestyle?
Some noble parents don't always agree with their children's choice of going away to school. I am thinking maybe they didn't approve, so therefore they didn't give him any money. He may also lead a very extravagant lifestyle as well. I think a mixture of these two things could cause him to go broke. I am surprised that he sold his rings though. School must be very important to him.
40. Arcanum means “a secret know only to the members of a small select group; a secret of nature, the kind that was formerly sought by alchemists.” Do you think Kvothe will make it into the Arcanum before the end of his third term, or before?
I am betting that he will make it in before. I think that his time at school is going to show just how special he is and different from everyone else. Then again, I could be wrong.
41. Book Quote: Besides, anger can keep you warm at night, and wounded pride can spur a man to wondrous things. What did you think of the last sentence of Chapter 37?
I found it very interesting and very true. Apparently many people like the quote as my kindle said 574 people have it highlighted.

42) What did you think of the way Kvothe handled Master Hemme?
43) Did you think lashing were a bit extreme for what Kvothe did? Did you like how Kvothe managed to talk himself out of getting expelled and get accepted as an Arcanum?
44) Isn't it interesting no one at the university seems to think Chandrians are real?
45) Do you think if Kvothe had made it to university and had never lived on the streets he'd have handled the situation with Hemme differently? I ask because of what he told Awryl as to why he took the nahlrout.
46) I think Ambrose is to Kvothe what Malfoy is to Harry Potter. Is this reminding you a little of an adult version of Harry Potter? BTW, I keep forgetting how young Kvothe is. Does anyone else?

It's easy to see how Ben could forget, but I would think it would be harder for him to forget because he had a visual which would make it abundantly clear.

42) What did you think of the way Kvothe handled Master Hemme?
I thought Master Hemme deserved it to a certain extent (I dislike teachers who set students up like that); however, Kvothe went a bit too far. Makes me wonder if he really didn’t know how to control his power, or if the degree of the burn was intentional. I’m hoping not.
43) Did you think lashing were a bit extreme for what Kvothe did? Did you like how Kvothe managed to talk himself out of getting expelled and get accepted as an Arcanum?
Oh, the lashing was way too extreme! Barbaric. I really was happy that he used what Ben taught him and was able to defend himself. It totally shocked me that he got into the Arcanum so soon.
44) Isn't it interesting no one at the university seems to think Chandrians are real?
Yes. This totally baffles me.
45) Do you think if Kvothe had made it to university and had never lived on the streets he'd have handled the situation with Hemme differently? I ask because of what he told Awryl as to why he took the nahlrout.
Yes. While he would have been curious and inquisitive as he was with Ben, I don’t think he would have been so forward as to approach Hemme on that first day. I think there are a lot of adolescent hormones making him more impulsive.
46) I think Ambrose is to Kvothe what Malfoy is to Harry Potter. Is this reminding you a little of an adult version of Harry Potter? BTW, I keep forgetting how young Kvothe is. Does anyone else?
Very much so, with regards to the Malfoy & an adult HP. Yes, in dialogue he is seems older, but some of his actions show that he is very young.

19. What did you think of Kvothe binding the air in his lungs with the air outside of him? Were you surprised that he could do such a thing without training? Do you think he will be more cautious in the future?
Well, being an ICU nurse who worked with patients on ventilators, and knowing the delicate balance of negative/positive pressure making the lungs work – that the pressure inside the lungs (alveolar pressure) is positive compared to the atmospheric pressure – I was very impressed with this. Yes, I think he learned a lesson here – at least with pulling something inside his body.
20. Do you think we will hear more about the greystones (waystones)? They seem to hold some importance since they are mentioned in two different chapters.
I’m thinking, “yes” – especially since Ben seemed to want to know about them.
21. Were you surprised by Ben's quick departure? Do you think we will see him again?
No, there were hints, but it was kind of abrupt. Plus, there are a lot of characters in this book, so I figured we had to meet more. I’m thinking we’ll see him again.
22. What a sad scene! I felt so sorry for Kvothe. I really liked his family and traveling troupe. Do you think that the Chandrians were who killed them? It sounds like it had something to do with Kvothe's parents new song. Thoughts?
Yes, very sad; and Kvothe suffered so deeply from losing them, even years later. I thought the traveling troupe were great. Yes, I’m betting it was the Chandrians. Appears the new song definitely was getting too close. But I don’t know how they knew…unless the Chandrians overheard it.
23. What did you think of Cinder and Lord Haliax? Again, we have the mention of "the inner turnings of someone's name". Do you think this has to do with Lord Haliax's ability to control his gang?
Oh, that whole scene was a big mystery to me. I mean, part of me is thinking they killed the traveling troupe, but then, what scared them off? Why didn’t Lord Haliax want Cinder messing with Kvothe? As to you last question, yes, I think so.
24. What did you think about the doors to the mind? I thought it was a great true life metaphor of how we tend to deal with pain. Do you think Kvothe's mind is trying to give him clues about something through his dream?
Yes, loved that part; so true, too. Oh! I hadn’t thought of it giving him clues. Now I’ll have to look at that part again. I was just trying to figure out why he was backtracking a bit in the storyline.
25. Tarbean sounds like a terrible place. Was anyone else surprised that Kvothe didn't use his magic to defend himself against Pike and his gang? Why do you think he didn't?
Yes, I kept waiting for it, but it didn’t happen. Maybe he was just too discombobulated, scared, grief-stricken, alone too long, or that disoriented from that head butt. Plus, has he ever really had to fight before?
26. Wow, Trapis and his home are pretty depressing. Do you think it will play a larger part in the story?
Depressing, yes, but uplifting in another way. Yes, I’m thinking it will be significant.
