Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments The Lark Ascending http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bl18I... is consistently one of the most popular pieces of classical music of modern times.

Originally conceived at the outbreak of the first world war, it seems to yearn for escape from the inevitibility of suffering. By the completion of the orchestral version in 1920, the rural idyll as painted by Constable, written about by Hardy and suggested by The Lark Ascending had all but passed, never to return.

The challenge is this - listen to The Lark Ascending (or part of it, if you're short of time) and write up to 250 words in any style on the theme of Change, using any thoughts or emotions that came to you while listening.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Mummy already had a go. Strange, Mummy chose music too - no-one else has!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You put an errant comma in your second sentence, Ignite. ;)

message 12: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Yep, link doesn't work. I'm thinking this is another fix!
I bet Ignite and Jennie have a working link...
;)

message 13: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Sorry I always do that, it's cause I copied the link from the pm instead of opening it and copying the full thing shall fix it now.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Strange Mummy goes without saying Patti! Pfft!

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Really want to enter this but so busy with my new book.
Will try to submit a last-minute entry so it may well be rubbish!

message 16: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Oh good - you'll give the rest of us a chance then! Still haven't got down to entering - I must.

message 18: by Jud (last edited Nov 12, 2012 02:03AM) (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I think it's meant to be 2 weeks for writing an entry, which means I lied and you have until next Wednesday to enter.

Don't think it was 2 weeks for voting

Edit: IGNORE THIS, last time it was 2 weeks to read the entries and vote for your favourite

message 19: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Would it be better to have 2 weeks to write and 1 week to vote?

message 20: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Yes. I'm glad. This week is a bit of a push. I need to have a gentle think.

message 21: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments OK, I'll extend the entry deadline till next Wed :o)

message 22: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Great stuff! The Lark Ascending doesn't have the same effect when you're listening to it at double speed because you're running out of time!

Oh, is it 200 words, Marc, or 250?

message 23: by Marc (new)

I think I went 200 words

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It says 250 words up in Jud's original message Marc, and I think some people have already entered...

message 25: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments IT can be as many words as you want but a maximum of 250, how's that?

message 29: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Not my sort of music, so I think I heard it 'wrong' - certainly gave a starnge cast to my story.

message 40: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Jenny (Border Dweller) wrote: "Marc: what's your musical genre of choice?"

anything from 1977 onwards that isn't pop :-) Except certain dance genres like Trance or Jungle

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 210 comments Zappa? That was my morning listening today.

message 42: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Jenny (Border Dweller) wrote: "Zappa? That was my morning listening today."

Respec'! Bit pre-1977 in essence, but still regard what he represented musically

message 43: by Marc (new)

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments Bump, we need a couple more entries guys. It's only 200-250 words, about 15 minutes writing!

message 44: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Takes me a fortnight's thinking though!
