Carmelite Prayer question

I espcially enjoyed and learnt much from Keith Egan's papers, particularly the one discussing Carmelite prayer and solitude..."Carmelite solitude has always been for the sake of inner solitude, a habit of inner mindfulness of the presence of a loving God." Do you think that is achievable for those of us who live as lay people in a secular society?
