I agree with Anna. Tyler has better books to start with. This one was a little weak, though enjoyable. My first title was The Accidental Tourist.
I loved this book. The character did what many of us dream of doing from time to time --- simply walking away and creating a new life for ourselves.

Anne Tyler is a brilliant writer, anything she writes is worth reading.
One of my favorites of Anne's is "The Tin Can Tree." But "Ladder of Years" is definitely worth reading. I love/like everything she's done...except for "Celestial Navigation." The feeling of depression never lifts in that one, for me.
I have read most of Anne Tyler's books and I look forward to each new one. I love her writing as it seems universal. My life in Aoteroa/New Zealand is nothing like Maryland but I can absolutely relate to her characters and the situations they are in. The characters speak like real people often not able to say what they really feel and so talking past each other.
