message 201: by Lord Nouda (new)

Lord Nouda (nouda) I'm taking a break from my marathon Horus Heresy read. I finished book 6 earlier today, so I'm reading Trapped instead.

Derek Knox (snokat) | 274 comments Finished Cold Days, excellent addition to the series. Marsters is back as narrator, and does a good job. Major changes continue to happen as players prepare for the coming war.

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Finished Bujold's first book in her Vorkosigan saga Shards of Honour.

Continuing the saga with book 2 Barrayar

Pedro António | 64 comments Just finished Lord of Chaos and I'm still absolutely speechless. The last quarter of the book is just breathtaking. Definitely my favourite book in the series thus far. Feel free to check my full review by clicking here.

Think I'll finally get around and read The Hunger Games (shame on me for not having read it yet!) now before continuing with The Wheel of Time.

Eric Gardner | 113 comments Just read The Walls of the Universe and Broken Universe both of which were excellent. I hope he continues the series since I felt there were some loose ends at the end of the last book.

Good luck with that! I'm also going through the series for the first time and loving it. Looking forward to hearing from your experience.

Man I wish I could read that fast. I think it took me a year and a half to catch up. I think I started just after The Gathering Storm came out and by the time it was done the paperback was almost out, so I waited.

Towers of Midnight was the first one I read when it came out.

Then again, the rate I'm reading now compared to then, maybe I could have done it in half the time. Maybe... lol.

I also found my reading really slowed down with Winter's Heart and especially on Crossroads of Twilight. It really picked back up with Knife of Dreams though.

Anyways, good luck! I can't wait to read/discuss A Memory of Light!

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I started listening to Cold Days yesterday. So far, it's really good. James Marsters still doesn't sound like my Head-Harry, but I'll get through it.

I was going to finish reading The Devil You Know last night, but the battery on my Nook was unexpectedly run down. (I'm getting a new one for Christmas because they don't make the battery anymore.) So, I started reading The Rook instead. It's got an awesome opening.

I do like Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers but you have to kind of take them as products of their time. I was less impressed with the later books in the series when he started trying to retrofit current SF tropes (nanotech, e.g.) back into the Known Space universe.

I'll be interested to hear what you think. I have been sitting on the fence about even starting the series. The number of books is daunting enough without some of the, shall we say, tepid reviews of the middle of the series.

Alex and Pedro, I guess I'm saying it all rests with you! :)

I'll be starting the 7th book in the series in a couple of days. Most people seem to think the series starts to slow down by the 6th, but that was by far my favourite book in the series thus far.

I've been treating each book as I would if it were a standalone book so I don't let my love for some characters cloud my judgement and thus far I've got enough answers in each book that I didn't feel cheated by its length and enough questions that I want to read the next one.

Granted, some things are annoying: mainly verbose descriptions of clothing and certain nervous habits that seem to occur a bit too often and I guess certain characters could be downright annoying to some people, but I can't say they bother me.
Also, the first hundred pages are generally really slow (they were in the first 5 books, though not in the 6th so that might have changed now) and there's a LOT of unnecessary reiterating as if anyone would start the series on the 6th book.

Overall I'm loving the series even with those minor annoyances and really looking forward to the 7th book, though I'm not even halfway done so take that with a pinch of salt.

I wonder if reading them back to back instead of as they came out makes a difference?

One hundred slow pages!? Wow, I usually only give a book 50-75 pages before I call it quits.(I used to finish a book no matter what, but recently I decided I have too many things to read to waste time with a book I'm not enjoying.)

Things still happen, but because Jordan decides to reiterate everything about the characters' physical traits even though some of them have been around for over 5000+ the pace is slowed down considerably.

Thus far that'd be my only real gripe with the series, especially since I really don't see a point to it unless he expected people to start the series halfway through, which I don't think anyone would.

I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to read them all in a row, I personally wouldn't risk getting burned out of the series so I'm reading 1-2 books between each WoT book.

message 214: by Ryne (new)

Ryne | 68 comments Currently reading The Ninth Orphan, a Bourne-esque sci-fi thriller. It's got some potential but I've been a little disappointed after the first third.

message 215: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António | 64 comments Just finished The Hunger Games and... I'm definitely not impressed. I was expecting a lot more from it given the hype and how good the pre-game bits are. You can check my full review by clicking here.

Going back to The Wheel of Time and starting A Crown of Swords, really excited to know what happens next after the amazing ending to Lord of Chaos, though a lot of people seem to think the series starts going downhill at about this point so we'll see.

message 216: by Celine (new)

Celine | 36 comments I just finished Reinventing Comics: How Imagination and Technology Are Revolutionizing an Art Form, which was a very interesting read. I'm getting the next book from the library soon.

message 217: by Willow (new)

Willow (willowfire) | 5 comments At the moment I'm reading Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George. Then I think I'll finish Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind.

I've been trying to appreciate each book by what it is and not for the whole series, and thus far I've been getting enough out of each one not to feel cheated, plenty of questions answered and enough to answer that I'm excited for the next book.

Hopefully that doesn't change any time soon, I feel like I'm already invested enough that I'll probably finish the series anyway, but I'd much rather have it continue to impress me this much rather than seeing it as wasted potential.

Finally finished Cold Days last night. Real life (and UPS Holiday delivery) seemed determined to slow me down. This is a really great addition to the series. You can read my Full Review if you're so inclined.

On to The Hobbit next for club, then I'm not quite sure what I"ll read next.
