Kaje Harper | 17377 comments We recently had a couple of members express an interest in setting up a Read-to-review option here in the group.

This is where an author offers one or more free copies of their books to readers in exchange for an honest review. The author may specify a time limit, or places they need the review to be posted (eg. Goodreads only or GR and Amazon.)

The advantage to the system is that readers get free books and authors get notice for their work.

The downside is organizational, and in the possible failings of the system. -Readers who take a free copy but don't review. -Authors who are intimidating in their approach so readers don't feel able to write a negative review of the free book. -Readers taking on more books than they can handle...

If we did this at all, we moderators don't feel we have the time and energy to closely regulate things. There is a Read-to-review group, Making Connections YA Edition that is well organized, does only this function, and has an LGBT section.

If we were to do Read-to-review on this group, the most we would probably do would be to provide a thread for authors to post the book, requirements and number of copies. All negotiating, choosing readers, etc, would have to happen by PM or email outside the group.

Would having a thread like that be worthwhile? How do you feel about read-to-review? let us know here.

Anna I suspect that in a small group where people can get to know each other (like here), people might be more likely to come through and actually review books they sign up for. Over there, people might make 'drive-by requests' and forget about it.

This is my admittedly limited data:
-In the Making Connections group, I got one review out of five sign ups.
-In this group I only got one interested person, but that person did write a review.

So I'd be interested in such a thread to find a home for my remaining unclaimed copies. I'd probably sign up to read & review, too, if something perfect for me shows up.

Jess Chambers (jesschambers) I really like this idea. Obviously it would be up to the authors and readers to organize it themselves, but I see know reason why it couldn't work. I've recently set up the Boys on the Brink Blog a blog dedicated to gay YA fiction and its authors, and am always on the lookout for new books to review.

Cobwebs-Iced-Across-SpaceTime (readingreindeerproximacentauri) I'd be interested; I have reviewed often for MC-YA and several other GR groups. The idea of setting up a folder and letting authors handle their own request threads is viable also.

Byron (byft) For real Anna??? no one else???

I'm really surprised and slightly disappointed to read that... That book is sitting in my top 3 YA's for this year...

Kaje, I'd sign up periodically for read for review..

Byron (byft) Oh hey jessica I just saw your post about James Crawford book Caleo.. YAY!!! (that was another review I just realised I hadn't done!!!)

message 7: by Jess (new)

Jess Chambers (jesschambers) Hahaha! Glad to be of service, Byron!

Samantha Boyette | 53 comments I'd participate as both an author and a reader. Also It seems like even though that other group has a LGBT section, that isn't really what most people are looking for. Here we know people are looking for that sort of story.

K (k-polipetl) | 4090 comments I think so long as everyone understood that the group was just acting as a notice board for writers and reviewers to team up and that the group wasn't responsible for ensuring books were read/reviewed there shouldn't be a problem.

Having authors put requests for readers/reviewers in one place makes sense.

Generally I don't post reviews - mainly because my warped UK sense of humour can put me out of synch with what others may feel about a book - but I am happy to review the odd book or two if required.

Kaje Harper | 17377 comments Sounds like the general consensus is positive - my biggest concerns are that it stays friendly with not too many hassles between group members over review content and missing reviews, and that it doesn't take too much moderator organization. I think we can probably manage both of those by making it mainly a list of books available with the negotiations off-group. I just don't want it to generate bad feeling in what is otherwise a friendly environment. Done right, it should be a win-win.

You flatterer. :p

The other signups could be slow readers, or too busy, or they figured out they don't like my writing style, etc. It could be any reason at all. I'm just hoping people here are more likely to come out and say so if it just doesn't work for them, instead of vanishing.

I'll never go off on anyone for daring to have reading tastes that differ from mine and from what I've seen, the other authors hanging out here also seem fully capable of coping with not-perfect reviews. I think we'd be fine.

Jess Chambers (jesschambers) Well said, Anna!

Never too late to weigh in - I like opinions. I'm going to try to have one of us get this up and running for December.

With my second book coming out next month, I know I would appreciate to have additional reviews. I know I look at these before buying a book.

We are planning to get this going, as soon as Byron has two real life minutes to put it together. Hopefully it will be good to go by then :)
