Yeah reading Forge when the first creature appeared in the Vitr for me was a Woooo moment, I thought "That was the first time someone used magic!"

As for Kallor, I really thought he was an Azathanai after reading Forge and knowing the he and Caladan Brood were friends/associates, but going back and looking there are a lot of references of him being Human, so you is right Lori! :) Sorry for the confussion! :)

Luke (lukehgee) | 2 comments Hi All, I read Dust and TCG in the group read over in the fantasy series group with a few of you. I just finished this and need to get some thoughts down! It seems its a good 6 months since the last post here, but im going to share anyway!

I can't believe the subtly and restraint Erikson has. Its amazing.

After reading this, I now have no doubt that he had all of this etched out at the very beginning. And then the damn restraint he must of had to write a 3 million plus word epic and only let out little hints and tidbits of the beginnings and truly save enough for a whole other epic.

And the subtly. There were bombshells (for me anyway) that were dropped in this book, there were in passing, almost as an after thought! Some times calling back to only one sentence spoken in the middle of the main series, again in passing. If you blink you miss! Its fucking amazing.

Every page is just pure pay off (Well almost every page). And its the first book.

The first mention of the word "Azathani" and my mind was instantly blown! The Azath had a people! But then he just expanded and expanded on it. Never so simple. What about the comment "People who weren't born"

All the realms in the present were at first city states and territories, and it seems mostly of the one continent. I loved that.

I Rolled a tear for the hust legion and borderswords, though I seen the borderswords end coming.

Envy Spite and Malice were messed up and and damn thoroughly enjoyable though!

Ok for some reason from the Fallen series, I took Olar Ethil as being Burn, and it always bugged me because she was such a bitch and maybe I was missing something. Clearly I was, it makes more sense now. I wonder if being set on fire by Rint has anything to do with Telan (her aspect) being the fire warren.

The Bole brothers are decedents of that Jaghuts dolls!!! (he called the boleads - and in Dust or TCG, Olar Ethil calls one of the Boles a Jhag Bolead)

I wonder who the 9 dragons are!

It seems Kallor has the power to ban Azathani from his continent!

Two Azathani went into the Vitr! Where/who is the other one!

Three theories; Quick Ben is the child of Arathan and Korya Delath. Arathans mother is Mother Dark, before she was Mother Dark. Grizzen Farl is Edgewalker.

Am I far off here? What do you think?

Oh and also read a few "where is Mael" and some theories. I remember he was he was mentioned early on when Kallor was mentioned. Something along the lines of (When talking of crossing the sea to reign in Kallor) "If Mael the deserter lets you cross", something like that anyway.

Hey Luke!!! I completely agree with you 100%!! Erikson has completely ruined me for any other author!! THE MAN IS A GENIUS!!!!!!!!

Here's one of the things that blew my mind was that Grizzen Farl was both Knuckles and Master of the Deck!

The only disagreement I would have with everything you said is that whoever Edgewalker is, he would have tried to take over the Shadow Realm. I think it's in ICE's Night of Knives when we get our first real look at Edgewalker, and it's mentioned that his punishment for attempting to take over the Shadow realm was to forever walk the boundaries of Shadow....

I can't WAIT for the next installment....come on January 2014!!

Luke (lukehgee) | 2 comments Oh man Night of Knives reference. Ok I'll pay to that, that doesn't sound like Farl from Forge.

What is this you mention about Farl being Knuckles and Master of the deck? That one has gone right over my head. I thought Knuckles was just another name for Sechul Lath?

Oppps forgot the end of the sentance!! :)

I meant to say that I can't believe the Grizzen Farl is the father of both Knuckles and Master of the Deck (who's name escapes me at the moment!) That fact blew my mind!!! Not ONCE did either EVER call each other brother!

Cameron | 6 comments The depth and history of this book blows my mind. Favorite moments:

Learning the origins of vengeance/grief... This sword had so much meaning in the main series and now we know why.

Kagamandaras... His craziness in dragnipur in TTH makes sense!

The beginning of Hood's war on death... Wow.

Grizzin Farl. That's all :)

The back stories of scabandari, endest sillan, osserc, spinnock durav, tulas, andarist. All these characters have so much depth. Reread is going to be that much better now.

Anddd last FoD confirmed my hatred for Olar Ethil and spawned new hatred for Envy & Spite. What a fam.

Kerry (kerrymc) | 6 comments Just curious, does anyone else feel like they have to reread the whole d* series now that they've read Forge? I'm tempted... but I just finished my own reread last year. :)

message 59: by Lee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lee (kiwifirst) LOL @kerry. Yes, that is what happened to me. Hence starting the Fallen group. I had read the series 18 months before I read Forge. But you know what Kerry? As you read the series again, it makes you want to read Forge again! Maybe it is designed to never end?

Kerry (kerrymc) | 6 comments @Lee We're never going to get off this ride are we? I love that there are boards like this for when I get confused I can read others theories. Even if I'm a year behind on the board!

Cameron | 6 comments I feel the exact same way about the reread. So, I sat down about to start gardens of the moon again... But then I realized once Fall of Light comes out Im going to want to reread the whole series again!

I think im going to wait until I finish the Kharkanas trilogy and then read the series again!

message 62: by Lee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lee (kiwifirst) But Cameron, then the three book series about events before Pale will be written and you'll have to wait for those too ;)

message 63: by Lee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lee (kiwifirst) BTW Kerry and Cameron. We have another group called The Malazan Fallen where we have been reading the series and discuss chapter by chapter. So it is a great place to read discussions on almost all events. We only read 3 or 4 chapters a week and we have been going for a year. Up to Dust of Dreams at the moment, but we will be going into Forge after Crippled God.

Plenty of Malaz discussion to be had by all. Come over and join us.

Lori | 40 comments That group is great. It's so much fun to find other fan people. I'm in Lee's group and after FoD the reread is tremendous. I also reread FoD. I'm breathless waiting for FoL.

It's very weird to read about these more fleeting characters in FoD. Ugh to Spite and Envy! But I ended up liking Envy in MBotF, so she at least grew up. They were powerful kids with absolutely no discipline and morality.

A real difference in Knuckles/Sechul, in FoD he's just tagging along with Errastas.

Also can understand craziness of um, the blind artist on Dragnipur, begins with a K.

message 65: by Lee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lee (kiwifirst) Karaspala?

Cameron | 6 comments Kadaspala I think? Poor guy.

I've been creeping along with the group and I realized how much info I missed. Going to reread the crippled god with you guys!

message 67: by Lee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lee (kiwifirst) Excellent. I am assuming you mean over at The Fallen.

Cameron | 6 comments Yes. I read all 10 in 2013 so I didn't think I could take a full reread of the series so soon.

But rereading TCG sounds great!
