The forme you have to remember is this one: “есть” of which we could translate to “there is”. But better comes with reading these examples :
"I have money" : "У меня есть деньги" (to me there is money)
"He has a sister" : "У него есть сестра" (to him there is a sister)
In these phrases, they don't even use the word :
"I have no money" : "У меня нет денег"
"He has no sister" : "У него нет сестры"
There's other instances where we don't use the erbe at all. There where we would use "I am" in english, we only say "mine" or "I" in russian. Here are two examples :
"I am twenty years old" : "Мне двадцать лет" "I hurt" : "Мне больно"
The verbe to be
Part 1
The verbe "to be" in Russian is "быть", but it isn't used very often. The utilisation of this verbe can be different to english.
In the present tense, "to be" does not exist. For example, if you want to say : "He is not home", in russian it would be "Его нет дома", or in oposite, "He is home" would be "Он дома".
Another example : “I am an interpreter” would be without the verbe "Я - переводчик"
For more complicated phrases, we use the equivilant : "I think so I am" which would be translated to "Я мыслю, следовательно, существую", word for word "I think so I exist".
To say "It is", we utilise "Это", "It's my home" is "Это мой дом", "It's my apartment" gives "Это моя квартира".

part of a song!:

The song reminds me of David Hill's - Sometimes When We Touch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrKKcx...
You ask me if I love you
I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
