Ben Davis I say you don't need to read the book before because the movie is soooooo detailed.

Liz D'Amore I've read the Hobbit many times over the years and a gave it a quick re-read before seeing the film. Only thought about reading it a couple days before the release! I love it everytime I read it. Gotta love Bilbo!

C. J. Scurria I got the opportunity to read the book and then see the movie. Both were great! I can't wait to see the 2nd movie. The film let a few plot threads hanging but I hope to see how all the stories turn out in the next two movies.

James I read the book before I saw the movie.

Anne Hawn I always read the book before the movie. I want my own imagination to develop the character and scenes rather than someone else's.

message 116: by Veraa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Veraa I especially wanted to read the book before the films. I didn't had the change to do it with LOTR so i managed to do it now =)
It's better the first read the book because then you can prepare yourself more for what is coming :c

yeah same here, but my dad really wanted to take me to the film at Christmas :)

Virginia Read the book back in the 70's (the first time) and loved it. Absolutely worth reading! The movie was well done but I didn't care for the added scenes, and splitting it into 3 seems unnecessary. Maybe I'll read it again...

Erin I see the last post was over a year ago, but I've not seen the films and don't know if I will. Tolkien is such an amazing writer and I see it in my minds eye so well I'm afraid it would forever ruin the books for me. I totally understand how Christopher Tolkien feels.
So those of you who read the books and saw the film, am I right?

message 123: by Sharon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sharon Wheater Its a hard one really some books are better than the movies but that can also work the other way. Also if I read it and dont like it I wouldnt watch the film which has happened several times yet curiosity made me watch it and I have enjoyed it! Difficult to answer for me.
