Series to Read While Waiting for the Next Dresden Files Book

i just started reading Demon Accords God touched by John Conroe. a freind got me started. although the two main characters are co dependent the story is fast and exciting. i recommend this series whole heartedly

I'll counter that recommendation. The Demon Accords is so far the only series that doesn't have too much romance that I haven't liked on what I've found on here. The main character is so weak he can't do anything in the first book, then turns into a god in the second. The main character was just crushing everything around him in the second book that the only real interesting part was the emotional side of the story, and even that ending was easy to guess. The Author really should've slowed down the protagonist's power, because I can't get interested in the series anymore.

bookbub...lots of free books, some series as well. It fills the void my library apparently can't. So few ebooks I WANT to read. No Goodkind, no Grimes, no Butcher, no Berry. Not even those recommended here. So sad!

I second Libriomancer series and Iron Druid series. Also, I've found a few urban fantasy books that I haven't read yet but will get to them. I'm not sure how similar they are to Dresden, but they are urban fantasies with male main characters, except for one but it sounds interesting. 'The Magicians', is said to be like an adult Harry Potter, and also 'Mob Rules'(the one with a female protagonist), 'No Hero', 'The Collector', 'American Gods', Alex Verus, Sandman Slim, and 'The Night Watch'.

Lot of great suggestions so far. Might I suggest the Daniel Faust series by Craig Schaefer? It is darker in tone than DF, but interesting stories. I've so far read books 1-3.

I absolutely love Dresden, I've just finished Ghost Story and about to start Cold days. I also like Ben Aaronovitch a lot, well on top of my favorite stories of magic in 'real life'. I can also recommend Paul Cornell's books starting with London Falling. I found Sandman Slim really dark and slightly distressing compared to Dresden, but really good as well and worth pursuing (needed to take a break after the first though).

Hey Damian, did you ever get around to reading Markhat?

I got seven or eight books into 'The Hollows' by Kim Harrison. I don't want to keep reading, but I've already invested soooooo much time and energy into it. I took an Ilona Andrews break to remember what likable, competent, strong heroines are like. I'm gonna read a few more standalone books, and then see if I can tolerate the rest of that series. Maybe I'll finish it in fits and starts. I took a break between the first two to reread Harry Potter for the fiftieth time (that may not be an exaggeration), and I have a remarkable memory for books and series' once I pick up where I left off. Even the same book, I'm usually good for at least a year if I stop partway through. It's pretty much my only memorization talent that hasn't been destroyed by my medications, and I'm proud of it. I used to have near perfect recall for everything I read, but Gabapentin destroyed that, and I have yet to get it back. I guess I'll have to rebuild it from scratch like the rest of humanity.

Oh. Books. Right. I liked the first book in Ilona's 'The Edge' series. If it continued with those characters, I would definitely have kept reading. But since they're standalone books within the same universe, I can just read them when I want an individual book, like right now. I don't actually recommend them if you want something like Dresden, but they're good if you like a competent heroine. Very paranormal romance, which normally isn't my cup of tea, but when Ilona and Gordon are brewing it, I request seconds.

I don't have time to sift through these, so I'll just throw them out there if no one else recommended them yet:

The Devil You Know is book one in a five book series. It's about a freelance exorcist in a modern-day London where ghosts have become commonplace, and some have animated corpses that act as sort of "zombies."

I have the Russian-language version of Night Watch (or Ночной дозор) on order right now, but I have read the English translation. It takes place in Moscow, and involves a magical "Cold War" between Light and Dark Others. It has a very interesting take on magic.

Does anyone know of any good science fantasy books? I just finished watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood I like the way magic is treated as science. Any novels like that?

Recently read both of these series and they were right up there with Dresden.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have a few other recommendations if you would like to read other great urban fantasy series. Zero sight series by Justin B Shier(my all time favorite next to Dresden files). Also The Demon Accords series by John Conroe. Last but not least Hellequin Chronicles by Steve McHugh.
