I remember when I first read Dorothy Parker's short story "Arrangement in Black and White." Of course, every single one of her stories are just superb in their wit, but I laughed in delight at her skill when I saw this line for the first time, and dove on in:

"The woman with the pink velvet poppies twined round the assisted gold of her hair traversed the crowded room at an interesting gait combining a skip with a sidle, and clutched the lean arm of her host."
