Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I haven't made anything lately, but my friend just sent me a reel from Facebook that got my juices flowing. For those of you who crochet, here's an idea:

https://www.facebook.com/reel/1610708...

For every book you read in 2025, crochet a granny square in the colours of the book's cover.

Off to Michaels to buy some cheap yarn.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That is such a cool idea!

Not related with my reading, but I'm planning to do this blanket at some point this winter:

Jayme | 4519 comments That is a really great idea. You could do that with quilting squares, too.

message 1254: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That will be a cute blanket Sandra. What colours will you use? I went to Michael's and bought yarn in 5 different colours. I have a ball of white at home.

The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo The House of Lost Secrets by Anstey Harris Somewhere Beyond the Sea (Cerulean Chronicles, #2) by T.J. Klune

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Which quilt square would you use, Jayme?

message 1256: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'd probably go with the green one, although the other combinations look good to me too.

Great that you bought the yarn and plan to start with the first books, Janice!

message 1257: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Will you use the same seaform green? It looks really nice.

It's early enough to start right from the beginning. I need to plan for my current book: Dark Witch (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts

message 1258: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, I plan to use the exact same colors.

Yes, I guess part of the magic is knit and read kind of at the same time.

message 1259: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I tried to crochet a reading blanket last year and completely failed. It was just too much to keep up with for me. I love the idea though.

I did just finish crocheting a baby blanket for my neighbor who is due with her first baby in March. I need to remember to take a picture of it before I give it to her.

message 1260: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I need to relearn how to crochet! My hands don't work as well any more.

message 1261: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments It will be a great exercise for your hands then, and by extension to your brain.

message 1262: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I hope that will be the case.

Jayme | 4519 comments I found this pattern on line and darn it now I have a new project. Not only does my TBR list grow with you guys, but so does my project list!!
I wouldn't do this for every book I read, but only my 5 star reads and really really good 4 stars. I'm actually leaning towards the Wall Hanging (14 x50")

message 1264: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I love that, Jayme! Are you going to try to match your fabric to your covers? Or write / stitch some titles. on it? That seems harder to me.

message 1265: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That looks fun, Jayme. I like Kristie's idea of matching fabric to the covers.

I'm looking at covers differently now. I was going through Kindle's daily deals and picking out books with covers that would make great granny square blocks. Groan! And I don't even know if my hands will cooperate enough to enable me to crochet. I started a block several times last night, and have yet to get started with one that I find acceptable. I probably did the equivalent of a couple of blocks. I guess I need to let go of the expectation that they will look as perfect as they did when I was 20. My thumb is pretty sore this morning.

Jayme | 4519 comments I think I'm going to try and do both. I have a friend who is a quilt guru, so I am going to talk to her about it. The stitching of titles actually isn't that hard because you can get a machine to do it. There is a lady in our town who does stuff like that. I would drop it off and she would work her magic - a little cheating I know. My handwriting is horrible with a pen I couldn't imagine a needle and thread.

message 1267: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Hahaha, I don't think that's cheating at all. I feel like if I tried to stitch the titles I would ruin all the hard work I'd done. That's great that you know someone that can do it for you.

I quilting two baby blankets many years ago for a friend of mine who was having twins. Those twins are now out of college, so it's been a while. I am taking a class through my local parks and rec to quilt a table runner. I figure it will be a great refresher and I will learn some little tips and tricks as well as how to do it all the correct way. I'm really looking forward to it. My biggest challenge to start will be choosing the fabrics that look good together.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That looks amazing, Jayme!

message 1269: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Here's my first block. I don't think I picked the right blue. Maybe I'll just treat this as a test block and make another at another time.

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments i have 2 partly done blankets hidden away somewhere. You may guilt motivate me back to them.

message 1271: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Motivate is definitely the word of the day, Esther.

message 1272: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Nice job, Janice. Will you do one for every book?

message 1273: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That's my plan, at any rate.

I'm stressing over the colours. I need to sit myself down and have a serious talk about this need to have perfect matching colours.

message 1274: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I can see how that would be a problem. I would be the same way. I would want it to really match, but not want to use just a bit out of 500 different skeins of yarn.

message 1275: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Looks good, Janice! I agree with Kristie. It is great to match the colors exactly, but you will only use a few yards for every book, and you will probably end with endless skeins that you will not use.

message 1276: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Esther wrote: "i have 2 partly done blankets hidden away somewhere. You may guilt motivate me back to them."

I have an embroidery project to finish, which I will hang in a bathroom. I'd say that I've done about 30% of it. I also got a weaving loom for 2023 Christmas which I still haven't tried, although I bought a book to learn how to use it, of course. I also plan to do that blanket that I mentioned before. In progress projects seem to be a constant in my life. There is never a moment when I do not have unfinished stuff around me. I'm also thinking in home projects like finish painting our walls (I only have 2 bathrooms to go!) and some changes I want to make in our backyard... Being the control freak I am, this is kind of disturbing. I need a 40 hours long day and the energy of a toddler...

message 1277: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments You and I both. My ravelry’s project section has way more “hibernating” than I am comfortable with.

message 1278: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments I am in the same position, Sandra. I have a bunch of unfinished projects all the time. I need to start going through all my things and either finishing or ditching them. I'm not someone who likes to have unfinished things around, but I seem to have more and more of them lately.

Regarding "home projects" -
I started partially remodeling one of my bathrooms. I half put in a new faucet and a new drain pipe and a new shower head before running into issues with all three. I managed to scratch my wash basin while working on the drain pipe, so add that to the list of things I need to fix in that room. Fortunately, I was able to put my old shower head & knob back on temporarily so I can still shower and use the sink that has not been pulled apart, but that bathroom is a mess and it stresses me out. I am hoping to finish the whole thing and get it put back together next weekend because the new shower head is scheduled to arrive Saturday. I'll be working on the other parts during the week. But, until next weekend it is chaos in there! I have boxes of appliances, light fixtures, paints, tools, plus all the stuff out from under the cabinet... Definitely out of my comfort zone.

message 1279: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Bathrooms and kitchens are the worst rooms to have "in progress". it makes life way harder. I feel your pain. I hope you can solve it next weekend.

message 1280: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments That doesn't sound like a fun project, Kristie.

message 1281: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments It should have been pretty simple, but I keep running into issues that make it a bigger and more difficult project. I'm sure I'll be happy with it when it's done. The plan was to do it in bits and pieces with the easy part first. I'm sure I'll think twice before I start the next part. lol

message 1282: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments Kitchens and baths really are the most stressful renos. We are currently in the planning stages of tearing down our sunroom (leaky roof issues) and complete rebuild -new roof and HVAC for the whole house is part of the plan - all I see our dollar signs, but it will be a year round room which is great because it is unusable in the winter and hot summer. The best part though is I'm having a wall of built in bookcases designed in. I am so looking forward to gathering my books that are throughout the house and organizing them into one area. Construction starts in June when we come back from our trip.

message 1283: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh that will be wonderful when it's done, Jayme. My husband has been wanting to renovate our sunroom like that as well. We are nowhere near ready to do it though. Post a pic of your new room with bookshelves when it's done.

message 1284: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sounds great, Jayme! That is the kind of mess that is worthy. Lol
I'm always in favor of the renovations that make life more enjoyable inside the house for whatever reason. I hate when things break, though, but investing in doing some spaces more comfortable and usable is a must. I wish my husband agreed with me on this. Lol

message 1285: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments I've been wanting to this for awhile, but it wasn't until we started having a leaky roof that couldn't be patched up anymore that Henry bought into it. Now he has unleashed the beast because my wish list for the room is getting longer and longer!
