Jayme | 4519 comments @ Peggy - How did you make the baby rattle? Did you knit it?

@ Sarah - Your drawings are wonderful and I just put the book on my TBR list - Thank you.

I haven't been doing anything crafty, but I have been delving into my dusty cookbooks and cooking more. I think people are rediscovering and/or discovering things to bring them joy and calm. My cousin has started painting with watercolors this year- she has never painted before. She used one of her paintings for her Christmas card and it is stunning. For Christmas last year my brother had a company put together my grandfather and my mother's paintings and created a book, and everyone in the family received a copy. What I find fascinating is that you can see similarities in all of their art.

Jenn | 3029 comments Ugggh, I was racing to finish up a couple of masks and a single size crochet blanket (which I did not take a picture of, of course) for my MiL, and now her package has been lost in the post 🤬 Even if they find it now, she won’t get it in time for Christmas, but I really hope that it does turn up at some point 😞

message 1057: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks all!

@Jayme: it's crochet. And I agree, it's nice to do stuff that's not complicated, but requires enough of your attention to feel calming and keep your mind off other things.

@Jenn: oh no!!! That's horrible :( I hope it turns up, even if it's after christmas.

Ah, ok. I'll look into it for later then. :)

Edit: It publishes on Jan 5th here and is a "wish for it" on NetGalley. The Kindle is a bit pricey, but my library has it. I put a request in.

That's brilliant, Jayme. I never would have thought of creating my Christmas cards. Maybe if I can make something decent, I'll try that next year. And what a wonderful, thoughtful idea for a present.

I have purchased several different projects to try, but haven't stuck with anything. I have all sorts of arts & crafts items and cookbooks, etc. I just need to focus on them. I have found that I am pretty good at doing nothing. lol The internet is a bottomless pit.

Oh no! I hope it shows up sooner rather than later. My daughter sent us a package that won't get here by Christmas either. I told her not to worry about it, it will make a nice New Year's celebration. Honestly, what a great way to ring in the New Year.

message 1064: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, same here Kristie. Rob always makes fun of me, because I try out new stuff and do it for a while, and then due to lack of time, having done too much of it, not liking it as much as I thought, or feeling like trying something new, it ends up in the back of a closet. And every once in a while I pick something up again. It's not just arts and crafts, but also things like learning a new language or puzzles.

I was just thinking today that I should browse the internet for something new to try! I still got 1.5 weeks of holidays left after all..

message 1065: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Thanks guys 😊 and I agree Kristie. The days/weeks/months are running together so badly for me right now, that I probably wouldn’t bat an eye at getting a Christmas box in January lol

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Kristie wrote: "Lol, Peggy! I'm the same way. I have so many things started. I love learning and trying new things."

I am the same, one of colleagues asked me a few weeks ago: "How many hobbies do you have exactly?"

Trying new thing is fun. Some stick, some do not. I know I have so many hobbies that I cannot do them all. Reading is the one that i cannot do without. Knitting and crochet comes 2nd lately. The fact that there is a social element attached to it probably has a good impact, especially this year. It is also calming. and there is something usable/wearable at the end.

message 1070: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm glad I'm not the only one trying out new things (and then ignoring others). I think we can all learn anything if we're interested in it and put our minds to it.

Reading is also for me the only thing that I do consistently, basically on a daily basis.

I'm not on Etsy or Ravelry. This rattle is the first thing I crocheted (and finished) in 1.5 years. With my pace, I hardly ever have anything to sell ;-) And I just like making it and giving it away to people.

Inspired by Sarah, I've decided my next one will be urban sketching and watercolouring. I don't draw well at all, so before I start buying paints and brushes and paper (which will not be delivered soon anyway in these times), I'll start at the beginning with an online drawing course for beginners. I'm sure I can find a pencil and a peace of paper ;-) I'm going to do some googling tonight for this and can hopefully start tomorrow. So excited!!

Ravelry is a fiber craft social site. Like goodreads but for knitting and crochet. It has a great pattern database, a personal space to put details on your projects, groups. etc.

I really wish I could draw. I am totally hopeless.

message 1074: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Rob did art school ages ago, I'm sure I'll find something underneath the dust that covers his supplies ;-)

message 1075: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19146 comments My daughter is like that with her art too, Peggy. She's an amazing artist and many people have told her she could sell her work, but she doesn't want to. She enjoys doing it and giving it away. She says if she had to do it and meet deadlines, etc, it wouldn't be fun for her anymore. She has had a couple of people commission work from her, but she doesn't charge them except for the supplies unless it's someone close to her, then it's completely free.

message 1076: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I like that Kristie :) I made a few because people asked me to, also just for the cost of supplies, but it takes the fun out of it for me. If I can't work at my own pace or work on a project I feel like working on, it starts feeling like a chore.

I have done this too over the years. I've tried cross stitch, rug making, macrame, jewellery making, sewing, dress making, scrapbooking, drawing and painting. On the creative side. Cooking and reading are other hobbies of mine, both of these have been more consistent than the rest.

I am with you on this. I knit to relax.. Beside my mother, there is only one friend that request socks and she is definitely "knit worthy" as some say. So she gets a pair at her bday and Christmas but I can plan and finish them way ahead of time. No stress there.

message 1082: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, that sounds manageable.

I have a friend who crocheted a baby blanket for her first nephew. Now she has about 7 nieces and nephews and all have gotten baby blankets. She felt she had to do it for all of them. I don't think she enjoyed the last few as much as she did the first few. They're not small projects either!

So that's why my first nephew got a blanket, and this one is getting a rattle ;-) but actually, I like that she can reuse the blanket.

message 1083: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments I just did a baby blanket for a guy that I work with. He was very happy to get it because he had been realizing that little Miss Claire didn’t have her own. She has three older siblings, and had been using hand me downs for all things - including her blankie. I have a favorite pattern that I can almost do in my sleep, and it takes $20-25 and between a weekend and two weeks (depending on life). I love doing them, as I don’t have kids it is a way for me to stay connected with the world around me.

message 1085: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19146 comments Smart idea to give them something different, Peggy.

Jenn, that does sound wonderful.

My mom crochets afghans and started giving them to people and it got out of control. Everyone wants one. She doesn't seem to mind though, which is good. Although, I seriously doubt she'll ever be done making them all.

message 1086: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Dec 24, 2020 05:16AM) (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments I also knit, but haven't done it in awhile. When I was younger and at the age when my friends and brothers (I have 5) were all reproducing I was making baby blankets left and right. There has been a lull until recently now the second generation is starting to add to the population and I am starting to make baby blankets for great nieces and nephews. I have the time and I love knitting and thinking about the new baby brings me peace and joy.

That is excellent! Do you use water color pencils at all or just paints with brushes? I can't imagine getting detail like that without the pencils.

Sarah | 18550 comments Janice wrote: "That's a great painting, Sarah. Did you do one of Beans?"

Thank you. I haven't donee one of beans yet. I am going to give it a go. Rob's mum wants me to do one for her dog (shitsu x lhasa apso) too.

I should say that the frame on that painting was made by Rob.

I drew the outline in a waterproof fineliner pen then use my watercolours with brushes for the detail. I've never used the watercolour pencils or markers before.
