Gretchen The element that I loved about the book is that the weaving of actual Lincoln history legitimizes the story. You believe Lincoln could have been a vampire hunter because the actual facts of the fabric of his life are woven in such a stellar form of storytelling you start to question actual history with the created one. The movie in it's need to produce a scripted story for an attention weak audience fails to do that. There is no history no biography of Lincoln to help you fall into the story.

Nat true. they basically lied in the movie. for instance, only having one son.
The movie was fun, but nowhere near the book. I think it would have been better if they followed the book.
I was also SO excited to see him kill his first vampire at such a young age and that didn't happen. ha.

Yes the Lincolns had four children with only one living past childhood and into adulthood. Mary Todd's characterization in the film bothered me as well. The poor woman more then likely had bi-polar as I have read in studies conducted on her postmortem. At the very least she was said to have a bit of a contemptuous personality exacerbated by all of the horrible atrocities she endured. The movies portrayal of a balanced, polite, healthy Mary took me out of the story for question of it.

Bud Cobb The movie was a let down for me. I had read this book at least three times, once the week of the movie release. And was very disappointed that they did not build on Abe and his mother's relationship, which was his driving force to hunt. I was looking forward to the botched hunts he went on, and particularly scenes with his friends accompanying him.
I agree that they aimed toward a weak-minded audience and just focused on action. I hope in the future they are allowed to re-boot this as a television series to build much better character depth.

Kathy Miller Gretchen wrote: "The element that I loved about the book is that the weaving of actual Lincoln history legitimizes the story. You believe Lincoln could have been a vampire hunter because the actual facts of the fab..."

I Agree, the movie was not up to par with the novel, though it was entertaining enough. And the ending was different..Henry was a better character in the novel, and so was Abe.

Melissa I totally agree with all that has been stated here. In the book, the true historic facts helped the reader to think that this story could possibly be true. The reference to the Roanoke colony and its mysterious disappearance really intrigued me as a possible tie in to vampires in America! As if! The movie jumped into the action too quickly, but hey, why would a movie-going audience want historical references, right? (they can get them in the new upcoming Spielberg movie) Being interested in the Civil War for a long time, I read this books for kicks, and got plenty. While the movie had some visually stunning scenes, I left feeling a bit empty.

Gretchen Melissa I am looking forward to the Lincoln portrayal by Daniel Day Louis. He has had no bad roles.

Kathy Miller Just saw the movie, Lincoln Vampire Slayer and I too was disappointed. The novel was great, but the movie didn't develop the characters well. I'm not sure the major actors were up to their roles..or perhaps the director just wanted mostly action..Looking forward to the Lincoln portrayal by Daniel Day Lewis..great actor.

Katherine I think one of the reasons the movie doesn't hold up to the book is because the book has so many plots twisted together while the movie just has one basic plot of hunting vampires. I was kind of disappointed with the movie.

Lakishia Melissa wrote: "I totally agree with all that has been stated here. In the book, the true historic facts helped the reader to think that this story could possibly be true. The reference to the Roanoke colony and..."

I have not seen the movie yet, but I was hoping that it was not going to be like this. I found myself reading the book and second guessing if Abraham was really a vampire hunter, but then I quickly pulled my thoughts back to reality. That is just how good the book was. To hear that the movie isn't really interesting sucks. I will probably still check it out so I can form my own opinion of it. But to be honest, I believe you guys.

Erik Larson The Movie was horrible. good thing i read the book first or I would never have bother with the book after that disgrace of a movie. No background story, No real story line, They didn't even bother with any actual facts. The only thing similar to the book in the movie was there was this guy Named Abe Lincoln that hunted psudo-vampires. Oh and there were a few guys in grey suits and blue suits that shot at eachother...

Teri I agree that this movie is horrible! It jumps around to much, doesn't give really any information, left out information....UUGGHH! The book is so much better!

Wayne Michael It worked. You all paid to see crap. Hollywood wins again!

Oh contraire, I borrowed the DVD from someone else who had. Lol!

you've said everything that I was thinking when i saw the move this summer lol. whats a bummer is i've tried to tell my friends to read the book that it really was awesome but seeing the movie they are even less convinced to read the book. oh well

Paula Comfort Because the book was pure fun and fiction, I decided to go with that thought during the movie. I am a dedicated Lincolnphile, and have read many books on the man, I consider to be our greatest president. I loved seeing Lincoln as a kick-ass vamp killer. I said to my sister when we saw it, no wonder Lincoln was such a great president.

Amber Gretchen wrote: "The element that I loved about the book is that the weaving of actual Lincoln history legitimizes the story. You believe Lincoln could have been a vampire hunter because the actual facts of the fab..."

This is the exact reason I loved this book!! But oddly enough, this is what I heard from a bunch of people who didn't like the book. Personally though, I liked the concept and way it was written, really convincing.

Don't really have any desire to watch the movie either.

P.T. McHugh Enjoyed the book, just as many of you wrote, the author did a wonderful job integrating actual historical facts into the story, giving it a fun note of plausibility. The movie however never bothered to try. You could tell from the opening scene that it wasn't going to work.

message 19: by Bill1971 (new) - added it

Bill1971 Loved the book so much, that I didn't think a movie could do it justice, at least based on the trailer. Based on what I'm reading, glad I skipped it.

CD It's a bad wire fighting kung-fu movie with an ax.

Over the top fX where the physics of movement is violated beyond acceptable visual belief.

And the burning railroad bridge scene? That was the final straw in a waste of money and my time.

I did like the book it should be noted.

Nadya lets face it, the books are always better than the films. thing is if people are going to make films from books they should definately follow them closer. i agree that the film for this book was a let down and an ok film, could have been far better

message 22: by Erik (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erik Larson Thats not true. There are plenty of movie's better than books. Forrest Gump, I am Legend, i Robot, just to name a fraction of them. And those movies did not follow the books closely at all. I tend to think if you read a book and really like the book then watch the movie you might be disappointed. Rather if you watched the movie and loved it, then you read the book, you may not like the book at all as with the examples i listed above...

Sarah this movie was wriiten to diferent. it should had matched the book a lot more. the book was really good and the movie was ok but if you have read the book first it was a dissapointment. But if you havent read the book, like my sister, it probably was a really good movie. She said it was. The author of Abraham Lincoln: vampire hunter wrote the scren play for the movie and he went made it really different! so in the end the movie was a dissapointment for me and the book was really good.

message 24: by H.D. (new) - rated it 5 stars

H.D. Timmons As most movies vs. book debates, the book was much better. it was a richer story, and the weaving in of historical events really made this book one of my favorites of all time.

Jessica Mccormick I would agree with everyone else that the way the book weaved history in with the vampire hunting not only kept my attention, but made me start to believe that Abe had really been a vampire hunter.
The movie, well, we almost turned it off halfway through.
I did not like it. The railroad bridge scene was just too much.
