Julia I felt a little stupid reading this book because I couldn't follow it. It's written as a slave girl's thought process and I kept getting lost. All the French titles confused me also... I got too frustrated to finish it.

Donna I came upon this comment late, but it made me sad. A Million Nightingales is fine literary fiction, and I considered it worth the little extra "reader" effort.

ejs Julia, I am in agreement with you! I like the story/book but, the language loses me at times. The French is something I wish I knew! I will finish it, because I want to see how it ends, but it is not a smooth easy read.

Donna I know dialect and foreign languages are a problem for some people, but for some reason they don't bother me in fiction, even when I don't speak the languages. It's like trying to understand a friend of another culture. I feel like I'm in touch with the character.
